Lakers linked to blockbuster deal for Jrue Holiday in latest trade rumors

Yahoo4 days ago
Jrue Holiday was one of the first big names on the move this offseason as the Boston Celtics traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons. While Portland is looking to make a postseason push in 2024-25, many have predicted that the 35-year-old will be rerouted as he does not fit the organization's timeline.
Although there were many who believed that he could play a mentor role for the young roster, the Trail Blazers recently signed franchise legend Damian Lillard -- alleviating the need for a veteran presence. The two-time All-Star guard was recently named as a player to monitor on the trade market.
Grant Afseth of Fastbreak Journal revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers could target Holiday, if he is made available.
"Multiple sources recently told FastbreakJournal.com that Holiday is a name to monitor, particularly as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers," Fastbreak Journal's Grant Afseth wrote Sunday. "That's not to say active conversations are taking place, but his name continues to surface in NBA circles as the team evaluates options to add more talent around LeBron James and Luka Dončić. Other teams are monitoring the situation, though the Lakers are widely viewed as one of the most natural fits if Portland explores a deal."

Afseth noted that the Lakers could pair several expiring contracts to match salaries and acquire Holiday, who is set to make $32.4 million in 2025-26. He suggested that the deal could be expanded to include Robert Williams III, another potential target for Los Angeles.
The NBA reporter added that the organization has placed an emphasis on acquiring players that Luka Dončić values. The superstar guard has previously praised Holiday, labeling him as the best perimeter defender in the league.
His $37.2 million player option could present an obstacle in a potential deal, however, as the Lakers have reportedly been operating with the objective of keeping their books clean for the stacked 2027 free agent class -- where they hope to find a long-term co-star for Dončić. The opportunity to acquire the six-time All-Defensive Team guard, however, could be too good to pass up.
Holiday has won two titles in the past five seasons, helping the Milwaukee Bucks and Celtics both hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy in his first year on each roster. While Los Angeles has an eye on the future, they also have a roster that is built to win due to the presence of Dončić and LeBron James.

CGTN: How China's economy remains vibrant despite U.S. tariff war

BEIJING, July 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- With Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng to hold economic and trade talks with the United States in Sweden later this month, the strength and resilience of the Chinese economy is in the limelight once again. This round of talks, mutually agreed upon by both nations, is not only a diplomatic engagement but also a testament to China's enduring economic vitality in a complex international environment. Recent statistics underscore the robustness of China's economy. In the first half of 2025, the GDP grew by an impressive 5.3 percent year on year, surpassing market expectations despite global headwinds. This number reflects more than temporary growth; it exhibits the structural resilience and adaptability of an economy that continues to evolve and upgrade. Domestic demand emerged as the cornerstone of growth, contributing 68.8 percent to GDP expansion in this period. Initiatives such as large-scale equipment upgrades and consumer goods trade-in programs have effectively stimulated spending, cushioning China's economy from external shocks. In the first five months of 2025 alone, China's consumer goods trade-in program generated 1.1 trillion yuan ($153.1 billion) in sales, surpassing the figure for entire 2024. Boosted by the program, China's retail sales of consumer goods grew 5 percent year on year in the past six months – 0.4 percentage point faster than the growth recorded in the first quarter. While external uncertainties have introduced some pressure, China's trade diversification and the steady output of high-tech manufacturing and service industries have provided strong support to the economy. Though China's trade with some Western countries declined, its trade with Belt and Road partners, ASEAN countries, the European Union, and African nations saw respective increases of 4.7 percent, 9.6 percent, 3.5 percent, and 14.4 percent in the first half of 2025. This expansion of trade relationships has helped China reduce its reliance on any one market, lessening the impact of some Western economies' protectionist policies. China's resilience reverberates beyond its borders. As a crucial driver of global growth, China's steady economic performance boosts international market confidence and provides a stabilizing influence amid global uncertainties. Through continued focus on quality growth and opening up, China offers the international community a reliable engine for shared prosperity. A recent report from the U.S.-China Business Council indicates that 82 percent of American companies operating in China turned a profit in 2024. Though many cited the uncertainties in China-U.S. relations and tariffs as their main worry, the Chinese market continues to be crucial for them. Trade tensions pose obstacles, yet they have not crippled the resilience in the Chinese economy. The upcoming Beijing-Washington talks in Sweden demonstrate China's willingness to tackle differences via negotiations. While obstacles remain, China's ability to sustain growth, adapt to changing global landscapes, and engage constructively with international partners signals a future of shared opportunities and mutual advancement. Shohei Ohtani's home run streak ends at 5 games in Dodgers' win over Red Sox at Fenway Park

BOSTON (AP) — Shohei Ohtani was held homerless for the first time in a week in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. Ohtani struck out twice, singled, walked and hit a foul popup. His five-game home run streak leaves him tied with six other players in Dodgers history, most recently Max Muncy in 2019. When Ohtani came up for the final time with one out and one on and the Dodgers leading 5-2 in the top of the ninth, Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought in left-hander Brennan Bernardino to replace righty Jorge Alcala. Ohtani popped up foul to the catcher. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees' MLB trade deadline needs apparent after embarrassing late-game blunders in Friday's series-opening loss to Phillies

The Yankees enter the 2025 MLB trade deadline with a bullpen problem, and moves could be on the horizon, as evidenced in Friday's 12-5 series-opening loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Takeaways Will Warren's start gave the Yankees (56-47) a chance. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking three in 5.2 innings pitched. Manager Aaron Boone pulled Warren (6-5, 4.82 ERA) after 89 pitches (57 strikes) and getting the sixth's first two outs for left-handed reliever Tim Hill, who struck out Bryson Stott to end the inning, but the seventh was another story. Ultimately, Hill and those who followed unraveled -- all while New York entered the final three frames with a lead, following designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton's go-ahead sixth-inning home run put the Yankees up 3-2. While right-hander Luke Weaver's high-leverage relief appearance after Hill was a disaster, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt's costly seventh-inning error should not go unmentioned. With one out and runners at second and third after Weaver relieved Hill, Goldschmidt's airmailed throw home on Nick Castellanos' grounder allowed Trea Turner to score and tie the game at 3-3. J.T. Realmuto's three-run home run on the second pitch of the next at-bat pushed the Phillies ahead, 6-3, and Philadelphia (59-44) never looked back despite New York's two-run bottom half. To extend the point about the bullpen, after the Yankees' bats chipped away to make it a 6-5 deficit, New York gave that right back. Right-hander Ian Hamilton served up Kyle Schwarber's second home run of the evening, a three-run shot to bury the Yankees at 8-5, and the hole dug deeper in the ninth when right-hander Scott Effross allowed Edmundo Sosa's RBI single, Stott's two-run double and Turner's RBI triple -- all with two outs. Who's the MVP? Schwarber, whose two home runs -- tying and putting the game away -- made the biggest impact. Highlights What's next The Yankees and Phillies continue their three-game series with Saturday's 1:05 p.m. matchup. New York RHP Marcus Stroman (2-1, 5.64 ERA) and Philadelphia LHP Ranger Suárez (7-4, 2.66 ERA) are set to start.
