Spain deserved better in Euro 2025 final, says coach
"I think this team deserved more. We worked so hard for a long time to get here, to the final against a top-level side in England, and I thought the team deserved more, or at least to not be left with the feeling we have now," Tome told reporters after the match at St Jakob-Park in Basel.
The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Alessia Russo heading England level just before the hour mark following Mariona Caldentey's 25th-minute opener for Spain.
With no further scoring in extra time, it went to a shoot-out in which three Spain players including Aitana Bonmati all failed to score before Chloe Kelly netted the winning kick for England.
"This is sport and in sport you need to accept defeat, which is what happened to us in the penalty shoot-out," added Tome, who took over from Jorge Vilda as coach shortly after Spain beat England in the final of the 2023 World Cup.
"I thought we played well in the first half, then in the second half their equaliser maybe left us a bit downbeat.
"After that we dominated possession in extra time but couldn't get the win."
Spain, appearing in their first ever European Championship final, enjoyed 60 percent of the possession overall and had 24 attempts on goal to England's 10. But they paid the price for not putting the game to bed.
"I thought we were the better team but in football it is not always the best team which wins," Tome added.
"England are a great side and have been so competitive throughout the tournament.
"They got the equaliser and then defended to try to get to penalties, and in the shoot-out we chose the penalty-takers who we thought would be most effective."
Patri Guijarro scored Spain's first penalty but then Caldentey and Bonmati both had their attempts saved by England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, and Salma Paralluelo put her effort wide before Kelly won it.
"They all said they were confident and I had confidence in them. In the end anyone can score or miss a penalty but the players gave everything," the coach said.

'Lawal looked like Beckham'

England's victorious European championship squad is due to return to Britain on Monday to continue celebrations at the London residence of the British prime minister and along the streets of central London. Soon after their flight from Switzerland touches down on Monday afternoon, the players and coaches will be taken to a reception at 10 Downing Street hosted by Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, and Stephanie Peacock, the Sports Minister. On Tuesday afternoon, they will travel along The Mall in central London in an open-top bus and soak up the plaudits from fans at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. "I'm very much looking forward to it all," said England head coach Sarina Wiegman on Sunday night after her side had overcome world champions Spain 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out. "We are the players or the team that has the most talent, the one that is the most enjoyable to watch. But sometimes that's not enough." Spain head coach Montse Tomé echoed her star midfielder. "But hey, football is a sport where sometimes the best team doesn't always win," she added. Wales defender Woodham signs for Liverpool
Wales defender Lily Woodham has joined Liverpool following her departure from Seattle Reign. Woodham, who started all Wales' games at Euro 2025, left Reign over the weekend having joined the National Women's Soccer League club in 2024. The 24-year-old left-back spent most of the 2024-25 season on loan at Crystal Palace, making 20 appearances in the Women's Super League. Woodham returns to the English top flight on a permanent basis after joining a Reds side who finished seventh last season. "I'm a fan of Liverpool so it's a dream come true really," Woodham told the Merseyside club's website. "I'm really excited to meet everyone. It already feels like a home from home and everyone has been so nice to me and welcomed me. "I just want to bring everything I can to the team and always give my all in games and training." Woodham, who is Liverpool's fourth signing of the summer, joins fellow Wales internationals Gemma Evans and Ceri Holland at the Merseyside club. The length of Woodham's contract has not been specified. She moved to America after six years at Reading, while she has also played for Bristol City and Charlton Athletic.
