Abang Johari: Affin Bank can catalyse SME growth in strategic sectors
KUCHING (June 23): Affin Bank Bhd is well-positioned to catalyse the growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sarawak by offering targeted financing, digital transformation support, and non-financial capacity building aligned with the state's strategic economic sectors.
Premier of Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the bank should also deepen its role in empowering SMEs through inclusive initiatives and financial literacy programmes, in line with Sarawak's aspiration to become a high-income, innovation-driven economy.
'For non-financial support, through programmes like AFFIN BizChat, the bank can provide SMEs with access to business resources, market insights, and best practices, empowering them to innovate and grow sustainably.
'Affin Bank can prioritise lending and advisory services for SMEs in sectors central to Sarawak's diversification, such as agro-based ventures, tourism, manufacturing, technology, and the green economy,' he said.

Abang Johari said the bank's continued presence and expansion in the state should be matched with a deeper commitment to supporting the SME ecosystem, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas that are pivotal to Sarawak's economic transformation agenda.
Looking ahead, he said Affin Bank has the potential to evolve into not only a leading national bank but also a regional financial powerhouse by embracing cutting-edge innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI)-powered financial assistants, automated loan approvals, digital wallets and open banking platforms.
Meanwhile, Affin Bank president and group chief executive officer Datuk Wan Razly Abdullah said the branch expansion marks a step forward in broadening the bank's reach and enhancing its capabilities to better serve retail, SME, and corporate clients through specialised solutions in trade finance, advisory and transactional banking.

Meanwhile, MATRADE noted that Malaysia's participation in IPAS aligns with the country's strategic aspirations as outlined in the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the Malaysia Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, which identify aerospace as a core driver of future-ready industrial transformation. Global Economy To Slowdown In 2H Due To US Tariff Impact -- CGS International
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- The global economy is expected to face a slowdown in the second half (2H) of 2025 as tariffs imposed on the United States' (US) trading partners have impacted all economic actors, according to CGS International Securities Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CGS MY). In a research note, CGS MY stated that while China was hit the hardest, other US allies, including Canada, Mexico and the European Union (EU), also suffered negative impacts. 'Positively, the US producers who baulked at the possibility of another trade war have frontloaded their purchases and piled up inventory in anticipation of rainy days, benefiting global trade, especially export-oriented ASEAN economies, which saw shipments and trade surpluses growing rapidly. 'That said, we think the front-loaded support is at its tail end as tariffs start to kick in and the US producers may have started looking inwards, dampening global demand,' it said. Meanwhile, CGS MY said that the ASEAN-4 nations - Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - would likely lose some key growth momentum without the support from the US frontloading. The investment company has cut Indonesia's 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) forecast to 4.8 per cent from 5.0 per cent, while maintaining Singapore's GDP growth at 1.6 per cent. 'We forecast Thailand's GDP growth of 2.0 per cent in 2025, amidst dull sentiment on consumption, ongoing political turmoil, weak international arrivals, as well as risks from Trump's reciprocal tariffs,' it added. Furthermore, driven by the loss of the US market, CGS MY said that China may flood its products elsewhere, pricing out ASEAN producers. 'In our view, key to watch is the US bilateral talks with ASEAN countries on the reciprocal tariffs.

Johor, federal govt to push for competitive wages in JS-SEZ
JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor government, in collaboration with the federal government, will continue engaging with investors and companies in the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) to implement more competitive minimum wages, including a target of RM4,000 for fresh graduates. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the matter is currently being refined through the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC). 'This is a strategic move to ensure the welfare of local workers and attract high-quality talent to contribute to Johor's economic development,' he said in a Facebook post today. He also highlighted that clean water supply remains a priority for the state government, expressing appreciation for federal support in approving new infrastructure projects to increase treated water distribution capacity, especially in strategic areas like the JS-SEZ. 'Meanwhile, the long-term plan to develop large-scale raw water resources to meet 2,000 million litres per day by 2060 demonstrates Johor's commitment to ensuring sustainable water supply for residents and industries,' he added. Onn Hafiz affirmed that the state government will continue to ensure smooth, transparent and impactful implementation for the benefit of all Johor residents.
