Closed wellness chain ordered to refund two clients
A COMPANY manager was caught by surprise when the wellness and spa chain she patronised suddenly ceased operations in May.
Molly Tea had signed up for 90 sessions worth RM4,400 with the Taman Nusa Bestari branch of the chain on Sept 12, 2024 and paid through 12 interest-free monthly instalments of RM366.67.
'I chose the body massage and head spa package,'' Tea said when met outside Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal at Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.
'I managed to go for 20 sessions of body massage and head spa.
'My mother went for five head spa sessions,'' she recounted.
She made a booking for a body massage in May and was given a May 17 appointment date.
'But when I turned up for my appointment, the place was closed,'' she said.
Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM3,202 to the claimant within two weeks.
In a similar case, a housewife and her husband only managed to go for five sessions before the closure of the chain's 29 branches.
Lee Yan Shan had signed up for 80 sessions with the company's Mutiara Rini branch, paying RM168 in cash and RM2,232 via online bank transfer on March 30 this year.
'My first treatment was a two- hour body massage on April 6,'' she said.
The claimant said that her husband, who works as an accountant in Singapore, went for two body massages.
'I told the person-in-charge that we were able to go for the massage only on Sundays,'' added Lee.
The claimant said they attended five sessions on April 6, 13, 20, 24 and 27.
'I called them on May 1 to book our next appointment but was shocked to learn from my sister that the chain had ceased operations,'' said Lee.
Hafez ordered the respondent, who was not present, to refund RM1,980 to the claimant within two weeks.

Median Wage Rises To RM3000 In March As Labour Market Strengthens
Malaysia's formal sector labour market continued its recovery in early 2025, with the median monthly wage reaching RM3,000 in March, a 5.5% increase from RM2,844 in the same month last year. The growth in wages was supported by steady employment gains and government wage policies, including the upward revision of the minimum wage. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), formal sector employment expanded by 3.6% year-on-year in March, with earlier gains of 3.1% in January and 3.4% in February, reflecting consistent momentum across the first quarter of 2025. Of the 6.8 million formal employees, the report showed males accounted for 55.1% (3.7 million), earning a median wage of RM3,000, while females made up 44.9% (3.04 million) with a slightly lower median wage of RM2,982. Wage growth was stronger among women, rising by 6.5%, compared to 3.4% for men, indicating gradual progress in closing the gender wage gap. Wages rose across all age groups, with the most notable increase among employees under 20, whose median wage surged by 13.3% to RM1,700. However, employment numbers declined slightly in the 20–24 age bracket, bucking the positive trend seen in other age groups. DOSM noted that the Mining & Quarrying sector continued to offer the highest remuneration, with a median wage of RM8,800, despite employing just 0.6% of the workforce. This marked a 4.8% year-on-year rise. At the other end of the spectrum, the Agriculture sector recorded the lowest median wage at RM2,200, covering 1.9% of formal employees. Geographically, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur topped the wage scale with a median of RM4,445, followed by Selangor at RM3,300. In contrast, Sabah (RM2,000), Kelantan (RM1,800), and Perlis (RM1,800) had the lowest median monthly wages in the country. While wage levels rose, income distribution remains a point of concern. As of March 2025: 27.4% of formal employees earned below RM2,000, down from 31.2% in March 2024, suggesting modest progress in reducing low-income prevalence. The 10th percentile earned RM1,700 or less, but this marked a 13.3% increase compared to RM1,500 a year ago. The 90th percentile of high-income earners made RM11,000 or more, up 4.8% year-on-year. The upward trend in wages and employment signals a healthier labour market environment, underpinned by robust economic growth and proactive policy measures. Related

Batik Air launches direct Subang–Kuching flight, boosts Sarawak's domestic air travel

Speaking at a press conference after the touchdown of flight OD1612, Sarawak Minister for Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said he had long urged Batik Air to consider expanding its services to Sarawak and to help promote the state, including by launching its first international route from here. 'For example, it can fly to China or even to Korea, but that depends on the passenger load. 'But certainly, they can have a flight to China. For example, to Shenzhen or to Guangzhou or even other cities in China. 'We hope Batik Air will help us and support us with our requests because then, Batik Air would be the first airline to have direct international flights,' said Lee. According to Lee, the inaugural flight today flew 133 passengers out of its total capacity of 162. 'At present, all flights are from either Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or KLIA 2. 'Some passengers may prefer to fly from Subang because it is more convenient for them. From Subang, it normally takes about 30 to 45 minutes to get to the airport, depending on traffic conditions,' said Lee. He said Batik Air now covers all four airports in Sarawak. 'With these services, Batik Air has opened up new routes to Sarawak,' he said. The arrival of today's flight was celebrated with a welcoming ceremony co-hosted by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), highlighting the strengthening partnership between the airline and the state's tourism authorities. Passengers on flight OD1612 were greeted with traditional Sarawakian bead garlands upon arrival as a warm cultural gesture, showcasing the state's rich heritage. The launch underscored Batik Air's commitment to enhancing direct point-to-point connections in response to increasing demand for greater convenience, speed, and accessibility.
