ACB lens on Irrigation Dept as skeletons tumble out of closet

Hyderabad: The Irrigation Department in Telangana has come under intense scrutiny recently, following a surge in corruption cases against its officials. Frequent arrests of Irrigation engineers over the past three months related to disproportionate assets and bribery have cast serious doubts on the efficacy and integrity of personnel within the department. Most of the arrested corrupt officials are reported to have amassed assets worth no less than Rs 100 crore.
In the latest case concerning disproportionate assets, the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested Executive Engineer N Sridhar. Searches were conducted at multiple locations, including his residence and those of his relatives, in connection with allegations of acquiring illicit wealth. The corrupt official was found to own villas, luxury apartments, and expensive open plots in Hyderabad.
ACB officials revealed that they have been receiving numerous complaints against Irrigation officials, alleging demands for bribes to clear pending bills from contractors. Many of the irrigation engineers, who possess the authority to approve project works and finalise executing agencies, are currently facing corruption allegations within the department. ACB sleuths meticulously analysed Sridhar's track record before conducting searches to uncover assets amassed through illegal means throughout his career as an engineer. The market value of these disproportionate assets is estimated to exceed Rs 200 crore.
In recent times, the ACB also apprehended Assistant Engineer Nikesh Kumar from the Irrigation Department, unearthing assets valued at an estimated Rs 150 crore during raids at his residence and other locations. Nikesh allegedly colluded with contractors and undertook works under 'benami' (proxy) names. The sheer scale of his exploitation of official position stunned the entire department.
The arrest of Executive Engineer Arram Reddy Amarender Reddy, who was caught red handed accepting a bribe of Rs 60,000, further astonished irrigation officials. Such direct apprehension of irrigation officials by the Anti Corruption Bureau for accepting bribes has been rare in recent years.
Top officials have indicated that the Irrigation Secretary is currently reviewing the performance of department personnel.
A particular focus is on the long tenure of officials in single posts within the same office, which is believed to be a primary reason for them developing extensive networks with agencies and subsequently exploiting their positions for illicit gain.

CM: Karnataka ranks number one in per capita income among states

Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday asserted that 'due to the implementation of the five guarantee schemes by our government, Karnataka has become number one in the country in terms of per capita income'. He also claimed that BJP leaders do not understand economics. He was speaking at the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of various development works and a beneficiaries' meeting held in the Arasikere Assembly constituency. 'Karnataka is now ranked number one in the country in terms of per capita income. The main reason for this is the increased purchasing power of the people. And the increase in purchasing power is a direct result of our guarantee schemes. BJP leaders don't understand economics. That's why they're spreading false propaganda claiming that the state government has no money for development. Even if they try to mislead the people with politically motivated lies, the people of Karnataka will not be fooled,' CM Siddaramaiah asserted. He said that in the government's performance review meetings, lakhs of beneficiaries had come forward to express their gratitude, which proved that the Congress government had delivered on its promises. He further explained that while Rs 1.20 lakh crore had been allocated for developmental projects, Rs 56,000 crore was being spent on guarantee schemes to deliver development directly to people's doorsteps. Speaking about the national-level conference of backward communities held in Delhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had clearly expressed his understanding of the issues faced by backward communities. He stated that the Congress government had formulated programs for the uplift of Backward Classes, women, Dalits, the oppressed, and the poor from all castes. CM Siddaramaiah stated that Congress was the only party that designed and implemented programmes aimed at achieving social justice, uplifting the poor, and upholding the values of the Constitution. He challenged the BJP to look at history and see that only the Congress had consistently worked to implement social justice, both in the state and at the national level. He praised local Arasikere MLA Shivalingegowda, saying he was focused on both carrying out people-centric development works in the constituency and presenting the party and government's pro-people initiatives effectively in the Legislative Assembly. Expressing confidence, he said that Shivalingegowda, already elected four times, will definitely win again in the next election.

Let 2026 election be fought on people's wealth

The promised downward revision of prices of Jaguar and Johnnie Walker is barely a hot topic of discussion as the absence of tomato in rasam and of coconut in chutneys these days. For the EMI-trapped generation, the fall in interest rate still tops the list. On the other side, people from the bottom of the pyramid, which shrinks only when the cutoff is raised for political convenience, are more bothered about their daily bread. Your personal income may be rising slowly in pure numbers but persistently shrinking in value and in what it can afford to buy for you. What is heartening now is that some governments have begun to talk about putting more money in the hands of people; the promise of repatriating black money from Swiss banks and sharing the booty with common people has outlived its utility and died. Some promises are meant to perish as empty promises. So be it. When a government makes a serious effort at bringing in investments, taps the inherent potential for revenue growth, and spreads the message of social welfare to help people escape the poverty trap, it is the first baby step towards heralding economic progress. Tamil Nadu has taken the lead to announce to the world that the per capita income (at constant prices) has jumped to nearly Rs 2 lakh, making it the second-highest in India, just behind Karnataka's Rs 2.05 lakh. A balanced economic model, robust infrastructure, and skilled workforce have been the key drivers. TN's economic growth at 9.69% in 2024-25, the highest in India, has surely given it a push. If BJP wants to take pride in the rise in national per capita income (at constant prices) to Rs 1.15 lakh in 2024-25, up from Rs 72,805 in 2014-15, it ought to thank the southern states. Karnataka, TN, and Telangana have topped the chart, helping the national average to record an impressive 58% growth in the last 11 years, while the growth in BJP-ruled states is nothing to write home about.

KTR pins hooliganism tag on Cong; says industries fleeing

Hyderabad: The BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Sunday alleged that the Congress leaders were threatening the Kitex company which has come forward to set up Textile Park in Warangal to provide 25,000 jobs and expressed concerns that there was a danger of industries fleeing due to hooliganism by the Congress leaders. The BRS leader made these comments while participating in the distribution of sewing machines and KCR kits to women in Parakala constituency as part of the Gift A Smile program on Sunday. Rama Rao alleged that Congress leaders were threatening Kitex, which has announced that it will provide 25,000 jobs in the country's largest Kakatiya Textile Park. 'The Congress' hooliganism to provide jobs to only those they recommend has led to a situation where industries are fleeing,' said Rama Rao, criticising that while BRS wanted to bring industries to the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park and provide jobs to the youth of Telangana, Congress leaders were conspiring to loot it vertically. The BRS leader further said that the estimates of Rs 137 crore prepared in January for the construction of a canal in the Kakatiya Textile Park have increased to Rs 297 crore due to the greed of Congress ministers and MLAs. The Congress leaders of Warangal district wanted to loot Rs 167 crore in the name of canal construction. He said that the looting being done by Congress leaders will not stop if they are not questioned and said that they will protest against these irregularities in the upcoming assembly sessions. KTR further said that KCR has done justice to BCs in the past, and he was the only one who would give due priority to the common people tomorrow too. He said that Congress MLAs and ministers would fall in line only if BRS candidates win with impressive majorities in the local body elections. KTR said that the state government owes Rs 50,000 to every girl child in Telangana. The Revanth government, which should have given Rs 3,000 crore to self-help groups was celebrating by giving only Rs 300 crore. He said that the Congress government gave Rythu Bandhu during Lok Sabha elections and now as there are Panchayat elections.
