Book of evidence served on alleged Kinahan cartel figure Sean McGovern

A book of evidence has been served on alleged Kinahan cartel figure Sean McGovern relating to the murder of Noel 'Duck Egg' Kirwan.
McGovern, 39, of Kildare Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12, who was extradited from Dubai earlier this year, appeared before the three-judge Special Criminal Court on Monday.
He is charged with the murder of Mr Kirwan on December 22, 2016 at St Ronan's Drive, Clondalkin in Dublin.
Mr McGovern is also charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the same murder between October 20, 2016 and December 22, 2016.
He is further charged with directing the activities of a criminal organisation in connection with the surveillance of James Gately in preparation for the commission of an indictable offence between October 17, 2015 and April 6, 2017.
He is also charged with contributing to or participating in activity intending or being reckless as to whether such activity would facilitate a criminal organisation in the murder of Mr Kirwan. He faces a similar charge of facilitating a criminal organisation in a conspiracy to murder Mr Gately.
The book of evidence relating to the Kirwan murder was served on the accused on Monday morning, defence counsel Keith Spencer said. A second book of evidence will be served in October via electronic means.
Counsel reiterated the defence's plan to contest the legality of McGovern's extradition from Dubai in May of last year.
Counsel noted that this legal challenge could be brought before the Special Criminal Court or another appropriate court.
McGovern was remanded back in custody to Portlaoise Prison to appear before the court again in October.

Irish animal charity issues warning over midnight 'cat-killing gangs'

An animal charity based in Co Cork has issued a warning to local cat owners following reports of gangs searching for family pets to "kill with packs of dogs". Volunteer group Cat Action Trust Cork took to social media on Saturday to issue the safety alert as they warned that "cat-killing gangs are going around at midnight" in the Glen area on Cork's northside, "looking for cats to kill with packs of dogs again." The warning comes just months after Gardai in Cork launched an investigation into claims that a gang of youths were handing live cats over to be savaged by dogs. The disturbing incidents allegedly occurred in the Mahon area in March and April of this year. Speaking to Neil Prendeville on Red FM in early April, Mahon resident Louise Brazier-Graf said the attacks began a few weeks previously when a large group of boys used an elderly, stray cat as bait in a dog fight. 'It was a Wednesday evening, around 8-8:30, and I went to close my windows and there was this commotion going on outside,' she said. 'There was a huge group of boys, about 10 groups of boys, two grey [...] lurches. 'My son and I ran outside, screamed at them, got them to go away, but the two dogs ravaged the cat, and I watched the poor animal die. "It's one of the most horrific things that I've ever actually had to witness.' Louise continued: "And then last night's one was a neighbour's cat, and it was killed outside the front of its house after a dog was set on it. 'I heard the commotion, I heard the cat screaming, but of course, by the time we got there, he was done. 'The two youths just ran away and my son and another neighbour chased the dog. They tried to catch him to keep the dog and put him in with the pound or whatever, but they couldn't catch him. Gardai confirmed at the time that they "received reports of suspected animal cruelty that occurred in the Mahon area of Cork City on the 8th of April 2025," and that "Enquiries are ongoing.' Kilkeel police officer injured after being 'dragged by car for several metres'

A police officer has been injured after he was "dragged by a moving car for several metres" during an incident in Co Down. It came as police carried out traffic duties on the Mountain Road in Kilkeel on Friday night. A police spokesperson said at about 10.15pm they had cause to stop a silver Mitsubishi Shogun. "As an officer was leaning into the vehicle, he detected a strong smell which he suspected was cannabis," they said. "When he asked the driver about this, the driver made off at speed, dragging the officer for several metres before he could free himself. "The officer sustained an arm injury and was unable to continue with his duties. He has since attended hospital for treatment." Police said an investigation into the incident is ongoing. "Police officers carry out their job knowing that on any given day they could be faced with difficult and dangerous situations, but it is completely unacceptable that they should be deliberately injured," they said. "The outcome of the driver's actions could have been much more serious and the public should rest assured that the perpetrator will face the consequences. "We would appeal to anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1742 of August 1 2025."
