Viral: Netizens are shocked to realise what the G in 5G stands for, and it's not gigabyte
If you were living life peacefully, assuming you knew what the G in 5G, the internet you use daily is, then you are about to lose your mind for some time. It doesn't help the matter that the 'G' in every different data variation such as 3G, 4G, 5G and 10G has a different meaning with gigabyte being the one for only 10G.
Recently a post on X by MTN Uganda asked people to answer "without Googling, what does the "G" in 4G and 5G stand for?" The options for the answers were A) Generation B) Gigabyte C) Google and D) Grid
Most of the people in the comments section answered B for Gigabyte, however, the answer was A for Generation. Others went for out-of-the-box answers such as Generator, Greed, Good thief, Gamma rays and more.

What does 5G mean?

5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology.
It is commonly used for smartphones and is better than the previous generations at connecting multiple devices at once.
The evolution of the G system began in 1980 with the invention of the mobile phone which allowed for analogue data to be transmitted via phone calls. In 1991, digital came into the arena with 2G and SMS and MMS capabilities were launched.
5G in particular debuted in South Korea in April 2019 and during the Covid-19 pandemic, US researchers found that the effects of radio-frequency radiation generated by ultra-fast mobile internet had a negligible health impact.

The study published in PLOS ONE was done after several 5G masts were vandalised during lockdowns following conspiracy theories that they caused COVID-19. Thus, the researchers conducted experiments using embryonic zebrafish, an organism whose 70% genes match those of humans, meaning the results of experiments on them can be confidently applied to humans.
They exposed the zebrafishes to 3.5 GHz radio frequency radiation for two days in a box made of copper. The radiation entered the box through an antenna and the copper prevented the radiation from escaping. In the results, experts found no significant impacts on mortality thus meaning that 5G is safer for humans than any other data variation.
So the next time you talk about 5G internet you know it's fifth generation and not five gigabytes.

AI-powered mosquito control programme at 66 locations across Andhra Pradesh soon
Vijayawada: The municipal administration and urban development dept will soon launch a focused 'smart mosquito control' programme using deep technology to check vector-borne diseases. The artificial intelligence-powered smart mosquito surveillance system (SMoSS) would be launched on a pilot basis at 66 locations in six major municipal corporations in the state. SMoSS will primarily safeguard public health by curbing the dreaded mosquito menace, besides reducing operational burden on civic staff and helping in cutting costs of urban local bodies. The programme will be closely and monitored with the help of internet-of-things like drones, sensors, heat maps, and traps. "We will launch the pilot project at 16 locations in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, four in Kakinada, five in Rajamahendravaram, 28 in Vijayawada, seven in Nellore, and six in Kurnool," said P Sampath Kumar, director of municipal administration. Principal secretary Suresh Kumar and Sampath Kumar recently studied the AI-powered SMoSS, developed by a private agency, to assess its efficacy. SMoSS will trigger automatic alerts when mosquito density crosses a threshold level in any particular area. Data thus generated will be continuously streamed to a central server and visualized on a real-time dashboard. "This will enable close monitoring and ensure prompt fumigation in the affected areas in a data-driven approach for effective control of mosquitoes instead of the present 'blind spraying' process that has little impact. The IoT sensors will monitor mosquito density and guide the targeted activity," explained Sampath Kumar. Use of drones for spraying the larvicide would result in an efficient application by covering large areas with less chemical use, time and also cost. Evidence-based spraying, prevention of chemical overuse and promotion of public health safety are the key elements in the whole operation. "We plan to outsource the operations completely to specialized agencies and payment will be result-oriented by fixing operational accountability. Complaints, if any, from the citizens and field-level functionaries will be tracked via mobile applications (Vector Control and Puramitra)," said principal secretary Suresh Kumar.

Capgemini buys outsourcing company WNS for $3.3billion in AI push
BENGALURU: India's French connection is growing stronger. French IT services firm Capgemini, which has more than half of its 3.4 lakh employees in India, is acquiring one of the country's business process management (BPM) pioneers, WNS, for $3.3 billion. The move is seen as an attempt to bring strong technology expertise, especially AI, into BPM services to be able to offer enterprises much more comprehensive solutions. This acquisition comes a decade after Capgemini acquired Igate, another India-based IT company, for $4 billion. The WNS deal underscores India's growing importance in Capgemini's global strategy. Over 44,000 of WNS' 65,000 employees are based in India. WNS, founded in 1996 and listed on NYSE, counts United Airlines, Aviva, M&T Bank, Centrica and McCain Foods among its key customers.
