Who is Yang Hansen? Here's what you need to know about Portland Trail Blazers' shocking first-round pick
The Portland Trail Blazers delivered one of the biggest surprises of the 2025 NBA Draft by selecting Chinese center Yang Hansen with the 16th overall pick. In a move that stunned analysts and fans alike, Portland made a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire the pick, passing on higher-ranked prospects.
Hansen, who had been projected as a second-round selection, now becomes the first Chinese-born player to be drafted in the first round since Yi Jianlian in 2007.
Chinese basketball prospect Yang Hansen joined the Portland Trail Blazers
Yang Hansen, a 7-foot-2 center from the Qingdao Eagles in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), heard his name called early. Yet the Trail Blazers saw something others didn't, trading down from the 11th overall pick to secure him at No. 16. The Grizzlies used Portland's original pick to select Washington State forward Cedric Coward, while the Blazers took a major swing by grabbing Hansen.
Hansen's resume in China is already loaded. He was named CBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2024, and he earned All-Star honors in both of his seasons with Qingdao. He also captured the Rookie of the Year award in his debut season.
Statistically, Hansen averaged 15.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.5 assists during his two seasons in the CBA. His final year was even more productive, as he put up 16.2 points, 10 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.7 blocks over 53 games, according to RealGM.

Despite his accolades, Hansen's jump to the

will come with significant adjustments. While he thrived in China, concerns remain about how he'll handle the speed, physicality, and skill of NBA-level competition. His perimeter shot is still a work in progress, but there have been flashes of range that give scouts hope he could develop into a stretch big.
Still, Hansen's combination of size, vision, and touch has drawn lofty comparisons.
According to Jake Fischer, citing a source from the Denver Nuggets, Portland might be adding 'the Chinese [Nikola] Jokić.' That's a massive label.

While the tournament will feature several NBA stars proudly representing their nations, it will also miss some big names due to injuries and team decisions. From Luka Dončić suiting up for Slovenia to Giannis Antetokounmpo chasing gold with Greece, here's a complete breakdown of who's in, who's out, and what it all means for Europe's top basketball competition. Spencer Horwitz's slam powers Pirates' sweep of Tigers, 6-1
Spencer Horwitz's grand slam backed up a quality start from Bailey Falter and helped the host Pittsburgh Pirates finish off a three-game sweep of the frontrunning Detroit Tigers with a 6-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. HT Image Horwitz belted his third home run of the season and first career grand slam in the second inning off Detroit prospect Troy Melton (0-1), who made his major league debut. The 416-foot blast, which came with two outs, gave Pittsburgh a 5-0 lead and put the Pirates on course for their fourth series sweep of the season and 10th win in their past 13 home games. Horwitz finished 7-for-12 with seven RBIs in the series. The Tigers lost their third in a row and for the ninth time in their past 10 games. They were swept for the third time this season and second time in their past three series. Melton's rough day ended after five innings in which he allowed six runs on seven hits, including two home runs, walking two and striking out seven. Andrew McCutchen had the other home run in the bottom of the first -- his ninth of the season -- to put Pittsburgh ahead 1-0. Oneil Cruz had two hits and an RBI and stole two bases, bringing his season total to 33. Bryan Reynolds also continued his torrid hitting with two hits, including his 21st double of the season. Detroit produced its lone run in the top of the seventh when Falter (7-5) allowed a double to Spencer Torkelson and a single to Matt Vierling with one out. But Falter was sharp beyond that, delivering a bounce-back performance in which he struck out eight with no walks, and allowed the lone run on four hits in seven innings. Zach McKinstry, Wenceel Perez and Colt Keith each had a hit for the Tigers, who have scored only nine runs in six games since the All-Star break, with five of those coming in Tuesday's 8-5 loss. To make room for Melton on the active and 40-man rosters, the Tigers placed ace Tarik Skubal on the paternity list and designated center fielder Brewer Hicklen for assignment. --Field Level Media
