ICC Qatar unveils commission to boost private sector sustainability

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Qatar, in collaboration with the Al Attiyah Foundation, has launched the ICC Qatar Environment & Energy Commission – a landmark initiative aimed at galvanising the private sector's role in advancing Qatar's sustainable energy and climate goals.
The commission, unveiled during a high-level event in Doha on Wednesday, will serve as the country's premier platform for private-sector engagement on climate policy, environmental stewardship, and the energy transition. Aligned with global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the commission's establishment marks a significant step in reinforcing commitment to sustainability and economic diversification under the Qatar National Vision 2030.
The roadmap unveiled at the event outlines a phased implementation strategy, including the formation of dedicated working groups focused on low-carbon energy transition, sustainable water and desalination, and emissions mitigation through tools such as carbon markets and carbon capture.
The commission will also engage closely with national entities such as the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, KAHRAMAA, and Qatar Energy, while fostering strategic alliances with international partners including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), and the UN Global Compact.
ICC Qatar Secretary General Sheikha Tamader Al Thani said, 'The establishment of the ICC Qatar Environment & Energy Commission represents a significant step in advancing our commitment to sustainability as a key driver of long-term economic resilience and private sector leadership. This commission provides a dedicated platform for constructive dialogue, policy advocacy, and actionable collaboration between business, government, and global institutions.'
She also pointed out: 'Through the commission work, we aim to align with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030, while actively contributing to international frameworks and initiatives. Together with our partners at the Al Attiyah Foundation, we are confident that this commission will catalyze innovative solutions and position Qatar's private sector as a leader in the global energy transition.'
Speaking at the launch, Colman Hands, co-chair of the commission, emphasised the importance of private-sector leadership in addressing climate challenges. 'This Commission is designed to be a dynamic force, connecting policy, innovation, and investment in ways that can drive real change,' he stated.
The ICC is the world's largest business organisation, representing over 45 million companies in more than 100 countries. ICC promotes international trade, responsible business conduct, and a global approach to regulation through a unique mix of advocacy, standard- setting, and dispute resolution.
Operating under the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ICC Qatar facilitates dialogue between the Qatari business community and international regulatory bodies, helping ensure that national policies align with global standards and that Qatari businesses are effectively represented on the world stage.

NRNA Qatar General Convention elects Padam Giri as its president
Tribune News Network Doha The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) National Coordination Council Qatar successfully held its 11th General Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Doha, electing a new Executive Committee for the 2025–2027 term. Held with grandeur and broad participation, the event saw Padam Giri elected unopposed as President, leading a 36-member executive team. The biennial convention serves as a platform for the Nepalese diaspora in Qatar to renew leadership and enhance community engagement. The newly elected committee was officially sworn in by Election Commissioner Kamalni Guragain, who administered the oath of office and confidentiality. Padam Giri will lead the council alongside Roshan Aryal as First Vice-President, Subash Thapa as Second Vice-President, and Lila Rai as Third Vice-President. Ram Kumari Tamang was elected Women's Vice-President, with Tank Bahadur B K serving as Youth Vice-President. Shiva Bhujel has taken office as General Secretary, while Prem Kumar Basnet and Mohammad Azad Mansur will serve as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer, respectively. The secretarial team includes Khemraj Subedi, Isilal Pandit, and Shankarman Rai. Apsana Miya will serve as Women's Coordinator, with Chham Bahadur Chand as Youth Coordinator. In addition, the executive committee includes 19 members representing various sectors of the Nepali community in Qatar. The Audit Committee is headed by Padam Bahadur Ranabhat, with Sajid Eqbal and Hemraj Rijal as members, tasked with overseeing financial transparency. Qatar's representatives to the International Coordination Council (ICC) include Minraj Wagle, Jhavindra Belbase, Shiv Kumar Mahato, and Ishwar Raj Paudel. The convention was held under the patronage of Dr Badri KC, president of the NRNA ICC. It was attended by Salha Al Khalaf from Qatar's Ministry of Labour, officials from the Ministry of Interior, leaders of other expatriate communities, advisors and honorary members of the ICC, as well as representatives from various Nepali organisations across Qatar. Salha Al Khalaf, a distinguished guest at the event, extended his best wishes to the newly elected team and indicated that a follow-up meeting would be scheduled soon to explore future programmes and areas of cooperation. Dr Badri KC affirmed that the newly elected executive team is the official representative body of NRNA Qatar, operating under the Government of Nepal. He expressed confidence that the committee would adhere to the organisation's constitution and follow the directives of the ICC in its operations. Guided by the motto 'For Nepaleas, By Nepaleas,' NRNA Qatar has been at the forefront of various social, cultural, and philanthropic initiatives. The organisation maintains close collaboration with Qatari governmental bodies, charitable institutions, the Nepali Embassy, and other expatriate communities. Padam Giri, the newly elected President, is a veteran community leader who previously served two terms as General Secretary. He is recognised for his institutional experience and his collaborative efforts during significant events such as FIFA 2022 and the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he engaged effectively with Qatari authorities and community groups. The convention was chaired by Organising Committee Coordinator Keshab Karki and facilitated by Member Secretary Roshan Aryal.

Ministry of Awqaf concludes summer training programme 2025, honours 73
QNA Doha The Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf), represented by the Human Resources Department, concluded its 2025 summer training program with a closing ceremony that honoured 73 high school and university students, along with supervisors from the Training and Administrative Development Section and supervisors from the departments that hosted the trainees. The ceremony featured presentations by participating students, showcasing the most prominent administrative and technical skills they acquired during their training period, as well as what they learned about the ministry's vision, mission, and services it provides to the community. The students praised the program's comprehensive content, which helped enhance their professional skills, train them for the workplace, and leverage AI techniques in preparing reports and presentations. They also learned about the ministry's mission of advocacy and community service. For his part, Director of the Human Resources Department Mohammed Hassan Al Maliki commended the students' commitment and eagerness to utilize their summer vacation to acquire practical skills. He noted that the program is part of the ministry's efforts to support the human development pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030 by preparing a generation qualified to enter the labour market. Al Maliki urged participants to continue developing their skills and reinforce the practical values they had learned, such as punctuality, teamwork, effective communication, preparing correspondence and reports, and managing meetings. For her part, Head of Awqaf's Training and Administrative Development Section, Salwa Abdullah Al Badr Al Mutawa'ah confirmed that 33 male students and 40 female students participated in the program, and were distributed according to their preferences among four main departments within the ministry: the Information Systems Department, the Religious Call and Guidance Department, the Zakat Affairs Department, and the General Department of Endowments. Al Mutawa'ah explained that the 2025 summer training program focused on developing participants' skills in communication and dealing with the public, mastering archiving, analysing statistics, and using AI applications, with periodic weekly assessments to measure progress and motivate outstanding performance.

Threats and intimidation stalling top ICC prosecutor's Israel case: Report
New details have emerged about a series of intimidation campaigns, including threats to safety as well as possible sanctions, directed at the British chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as he pursues an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israeli officials in Gaza. Karim Khan has also been subjected to intense pressure from top British and United States public officials for The Hague court to withdraw the arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, the Middle East Eye (MEE) news website reported. The latest report followed an earlier revelation by the London-based online publication in July that Khan and the ICC were threatened with being 'destroyed' if they pursued the case against Israel. According to the MEE report published on Friday, Khan was 'privately threatened' by then-British Foreign Secretary David Cameron in April 2024 that the UK would defund and withdraw from the ICC if it issued warrants against the Israeli leaders, which it did so in November. In May 2024, US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also 'threatened' Khan with sanctions if he applied for the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant, the MEE reported. Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on Khan and four ICC judges. Khan also received a security briefing warning him that Israel's Mossad intelligence agency 'was active in The Hague and posed a potential threat' to him, the MEE reported. Khan, who is currently on indefinite leave amid allegations of sexual misconduct, was also reportedly told by his female accuser in text messages that there were 'games being played' and attempts to make her a 'pawn in some game I don't want to play', according to the MEE. The ICC investigations into Khan's alleged behaviour were later closed after the female witness refused to cooperate with them, but a separate United Nations probe remains. Khan has strenuously denied all the allegations against him. Two weeks before he was forced to go on leave in May 2025, Khan also reportedly met with Nicholas Kaufman, a British-Israeli defence lawyer at the ICC, to discuss the Israel investigation, the MEE report said. In a note of the meeting on file at the ICC, Kaufman reportedly told Khan that if the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant were not dropped, 'they will destroy you, and they will destroy the court.' The report said some ICC lawyers have privately 'expressed doubts' about the allegations against Khan, which emerged after the arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant were issued. The ICC issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu, Gallant and Hamas leader Mohammed Deif on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and Israel's subsequent war in Gaza. Deif has since been confirmed killed in an Israeli attack. The Israeli defendants remain internationally wanted suspects, and ICC member states are under a legal obligation to arrest them. Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 60,430 Palestinians and wounded 148,722. In recent months, Israel has been accused of committing new war crimes after reports that Israeli forces intentionally shot and killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians waiting to collect humanitarian aid from GHF food distribution points.
