Ace Bailey's reps told team with top-five pick not to draft Rutgers wing: Report
ESPN's report doesn't disclose which team in the top five Bailey's reps wanted to steer clear of the 6-foot-8 freshman.

The Utah Jazz ended up picking Bailey No. 5 overall. The Jazz's new president of basketball operations, Austin Ainge, spoke with reporters Wednesday night and expressed excitement about landing a prospect of Bailey's caliber despite owning only the fifth selection after entering the lottery tied for the best No. 1 pick odds.
"He's great," Ainge said of Bailey, via ESPN. "We were able to speak with him. He was super excited. We're super excited. We're expecting a very bright future. His scoring gets a lot of attention, [and] deservedly so. He's very skilled for his size. But watching a lot of film on him, I was impressed with his defensive effort and particularly his rebounding. Lot of weak side block shots, and his joy and energy for the game."
Ainge, the son of longtime Boston Celtics executive and current Jazz CEO and alternate governor Danny Ainge, added: "We do a lot of background calls and work on guys, and everyone loves being around Ace."
Bailey, along with Florida guard and reigning national champion Walter Clayton Jr., are the latest newcomers to join a Jazz roster littered with youth.

'I fit in good because we all young, so we all got a lot to learn,' Bailey said, via The Athletic. 'We can play with each other, get to know each other, how we play, how we fit in, what works, and then also, I don't know a lot about Utah, but I'm learning as we go.
"I know it's cold and it's hot. It get cold and it get hot here. Gotta find me a place with a good a good heater."
As for the other four teams in the top five, the Dallas Mavericks kicked off the draft by making Duke forward Cooper Flagg the youngest No. 1 overall pick since LeBron James in 2003. Then the San Antonio Spurs grabbed Bailey's Rutgers teammate, guard Dylan Harper, with the No. 2 overall pick.
Those two picks could have been written in Sharpie days before the draft.

Things got interesting at No. 3, where the Philadelphia 76ers sat Wednesday night. Bailey, who chose not to participate in workouts with individual teams before the draft, notably canceled a scheduled visit with the Sixers earlier this month.

Sixers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey told reporters Wednesday night that Bailey's refusal to work out for the team didn't play a part in Philadelphia's decision to pick Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe.
At No. 4 overall, the Charlotte Hornets drafted Duke wing Kon Knueppel.
Bailey was the only U.S.-based prospect who didn't meet with a single team outside of the combine.
"Every NBA team watched him work out in Chicago," Bailey's agent, Omar Cooper, told ESPN. "He did 18 interviews. Everyone got his medical. They watched him run and jump. They got his measurements.

Cooper continued, via ESPN: "No one said anything when Davion Mitchell canceled a workout with the Toronto Raptors. No one criticized Evan Mobley when he didn't work out for Cleveland, and they drafted him anyway."
"There is nothing uncommon about how Ace Bailey's pre-draft process was handled."
Approaching the draft, ESPN's Givony reported that the Washington Wizards at No. 6 overall, the New Orleans Pelicans at No. 7 overall and the Brooklyn Nets at No. 8 overall were preferred destinations for Bailey and his camp. The Wizards, in particular, were a popular landing spot for Bailey in mock drafts, including in Kevin O'Connor's for Yahoo Sports.
Bailey said Wednesday night he had "no idea" the Jazz were interested in drafting him, but they took him with the No. 5 overall pick.

What former Wisconsin star John Tonje said in his introductory press conference with Jazz
Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje met with the media for the first time as a member of the Utah Jazz on Sunday. Just a few days after hearing his name called on day two of the 2025 NBA draft, Tonje ventured to Salt Lake City, Utah, for his first meeting with local media members. He, alongside lottery pick and former Rutgers star Ace Bailey and NCAA champion Walter Clayton Jr., shared their initial thoughts on Utah and the opportunity to compete on a professional stage. Advertisement Prior to the draft, several outlets projected Tonje to fall in the mid-40's. The Jazz elected to select the Nebraska native at No. 53 overall, a slight slip for the 6-foot-5 scoring machine. Nonetheless, Tonje appeared optimistic. 'That was a little bit outside my range," Tonje told the media. "At the end of the day, I'm super excited to be here and just so happy I'm here with the Jazz.' Unlike Bailey, a consensus lottery pick before he even reached Rutgers, Tonje's journey to reach the NBA was a bit unorthodox. As a high schooler, Tonje received just three offers from Omaha, Colorado State and Missouri Western State. As a freshman with the Rams, he averaged 3.6 points and 1.0 rebounds in 8.5 minutes per game as a reserve. Advertisement The future NBA draftee would spend four years with Colorado State and eventually started all 33 games as a senior with per-game averages of 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. A summer with the Cameroon National Team in during the FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in 2023, coupled with a 2023-24 medical redshirt season, positioned him for an explosive final year as a college player. With the Badgers, Tonje was named a 2025 Second Team All-American, 2025 Naismith Player of the Year Semifinalist and member of the 2025 All-Big Ten first team. He averaged just under 20 points per game off 46.5% shooting from the field, 39% from 3 and 91% from the free-throw line, punctuating his season with a 37-point performance against BYU in the NCAA Tournament. Not coincidentally, Tonje's growth from an athlete with a minimal recruiting profile to college star prompted him to reflect on his basketball adventure. 'I think I had a lot of adversity," Tonje said. "Had to work my way up. I've been the last guy on the bench and then the guy at the top of the scouting report, so I think I'm someone that can understand all types of roles on the team, how to face adversity and try to get better every day.' Advertisement He will now look to showcase his dexterity on the hardwood when the Jazz begin their summer league run in Salt Lake City on July 5. Georgia transfer projected as first-round NFL draft pick
Penn State Nittany Lions cornerback A.J. Harris has been projected as a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft in ESPN's latest mock draft. Harris, who transferred to Penn State after his freshman season in 2023 with the Georgia Bulldogs, is a former five-star recruit. Matt Miller predicts that Harris will land with the Washington Commanders with the No. 25 pick in the draft. Harris is coming off a great sophomore season with Penn State. He helped the Nittany Lions advance to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff and recorded 48 tackles, one interception and five pass deflections. Harris had a much larger role at Penn State than he did in 2023 with Georgia (eight tackles). The 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback is a rising junior and has what it takes to play at the next level. Harris made a leap after his freshman season and should show significant improvement in his second year as the starter at Penn State. What ESPN said about A.J. Harris "Harris has shown ball-hawking skills and loves to press and jam receivers," said Miller. "He's still a bit green, having started only one season, but last season's tape -- along with Penn State's track record in developing defenders -- makes Harris one of the most promising corners in the country." Losing Harris via the transfer portal hurt for Georgia. There's no doubt he's one of Georgia's most painful transfer exits in recent memory along with quarterback Carson Beck and outside linebacker Damon Wilson after the 2024 season.
