Second half of thrilling North Wales season gets underway

Leader Live20-06-2025

Just 15 points separate the top-six teams in the division and with 18 points being awarded for victories, plenty more twists and turns are anticipated over the coming months.
Northop are one of those sides in the mix for the top honour heading into tomorrow's trip to Gwersyllt Park.
However, Jamie Griffiths, skipper of seventh-placed Park, wants a third win on the bounce for his team to put them in the conversation.
Griffiths said: 'Every game is a challenge and we will never shy away from a challenge.
'Things are picking up. We all know what the jobs are we've got to do and people have got to take responsibilities.
'It's all about improving and we're still a long way from where we want to be, but we are making strides forward.
'It's a building process and this is a big game. If we can beat them, we are in the pack.'
Northop bolstered their own lofty aims with a thrilling 13-run triumph at defending champions Mochdre last time out, inspired by a sparkling century from Jordan Evans.
'Jordan batted brilliantly and he is a class player,' said Northop captain Bart Ryan-Beswick.
'It was a good win and the lads bowled really well.'
Northop will welcome Welsh international Romano Franco back into the side tomorrow and Ryan-Beswick is anticipating a tough test.
He added: 'They are in good nick and it's never an easy place to go and play.
'We are at full strength, so we will give it a good go.'
Brymbo have placed themselves in an excellent position after winning six of their matches so far.
Dan Parry's side are in fourth position and there's a big game in store tomorrow as they play host to third-placed Mochdre.
Parry said: 'This week it's a big game. All of them now are big games.
'There are nine games to go. It will be interesting to see where everybody is and what availability's like.
'We have got some wrongs to put right against Mochdre and so have they.
'We should have beaten them at their place at the start of the season.'
Brymbo are weighing up a few changes to their line-up ahead of the match.
In another tasty encounter, leaders Bangor pay a visit to fifth-placed Menai Bridge tomorrow, while second-placed St Asaph are at home to basement side Bethesda.
In further action, Conwy are at Denbigh.
A super Sunday is lined up in the Welsh Cup. Gwersyllt Park will be hoping to avoid a shock when they make the trip to Division One Mold.
Meanwhile, an intriguing match-up is in store as Northop Hall welcome Brymbo.
'It will be a challenging game,' admitted Hall skipper Ben Slater. 'They're obviously a very, very good side.'
The other tie sees Mochdre at home to Colwyn Bay. Northop were scheduled to be at St Asaph, but this tie has been rearranged for July 6.

Former Celtic and Scotland hero Leigh Griffiths signs for little-known club in Australian second division at age 34

His new club will be the ninth different team he has played for NEW CLUB Former Celtic and Scotland hero Leigh Griffiths signs for little-known club in Australian second division at age 34 FORMER Celtic star Leigh Griffiths is on the move again. The 34-year-old had spent the last three years playing for semi-professional outfit Mandurah City in Western Australia, stepping into a player-coach role for the 2024 season. Advertisement 2 Leigh Griffiths during his heyday for Celtic Credit: Kenny Ramsay - The Sun Glasgow Griffiths, who scored 123 goals for the Hoops in 261 appearances, also won 22 Scotland caps and hit the net four times for his nation (including two memorable free-kicks against England in 2017). But his career in Scottish football ended on a sour note and he departed for Australia in August 2022. Griffiths was loaned out to Dundee during his final contract year with Celtic but his stint was overshadowed by him kicking a smoke bomb into the crowd during a match. He later joined Falkirk as a free agent but left after only six months, scoring twice in 12 games for the club who were then in the third tier. Advertisement The striker has now signed for Stirling Macedonia Lions of the National Premier Leagues Western Australia (NPL WA) setup. Nicknamed the Macies or the Macedonians, the club is based in Perth, Western Australia and finished fourth in the league last year. That qualified them for the NPL WA Finals and they would go all the way to the Grand Final only to lose to top seeds and league winners Olympic Kingsway. The National Premier Leagues operate on a regional structure below the A-League, the top flight of Australian football. Advertisement Stirling Macedonia released a picture of Griffiths in club kit and he was named on the subs' bench straight away for their match against Perth Soccer Club. A statement from Stirling Macedonia read: "We're delighted to officially welcome Leigh Griffiths to Stirling Macedonia! The diggers move in as Celtic Park pitch is dug up "A former Celtic FC player and Scotland international, Leigh arrives with a proven attacking pedigree and years of top-level experience. He adds genuine firepower to our front third and brings invaluable leadership to the squad. "Welcome to the Stirling family, Leigh!" Advertisement Keegan Ashley, the club's football operations manager, said: "What a pleasure it is to have someone of Leigh's experience join us at Stirling Macedonia. "He brings genuine quality in the attacking third and will have a big impact not only on the pitch but off it as well—helping guide and mentor our younger players as they develop their game." 2 Griffiths was unveiled by Stirling Macedonia this weekend Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Evans looking to help North Wales Crusaders' title push

Carl Forster's Crusaders are the team to beat and with eight matches of the campaign left to play, they sit three points clear at the head of the rankings. Welsh international Evans made a strong impression during his debut season with North Wales Crusaders last year and he was handed a new one-year-deal by head coach Forster. However, while an injury sustained away to Goole Vikings earlier in the season has seen him sidelined up to now, Evans remains hopeful of a return come the back end of the season. He told the club's website: 'I've loved my time at the club. 'There's a brilliant group of lads here, and Foz (Forster) and the rest of the coaching team are doing a brilliant job. 'Being injured when the team is flying at the top of the league can be tough, but I'm also really proud of the group we've got here and excited for what we can achieve. 'For me, the aim is to get back into contention towards the back end of the season and hopefully help play my part in getting this side to the league title.' Cru will return to action on July 6. Colwyn Bay's Stadiwm CSM will be the setting for the meeting with second-placed Workington.

He's already signed Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, while Lyall Cameron has also joined the club after penning a pre-contract earlier this year. In the meantime Martin is weighing up the futures of several players already within the club who could leave during this current window. One of those players is Dutch outcast Robin Propper as Rangers are still in talks with FC Twente over a potential return to Enschede just 12 months on from his move to Glasgow. Martin had the chance to see him in action today as he was involved in a pre-season friendly which was held behind closed doors. Rangers faced Welsh champions The New Saints in a game believed to be held at their training ground at Auchenhowie. And SunSport understands the result didn't go in Rangers' favour as TNS came out on top to win 1-0. It's unclear which players were involved exactly but SunSport understands Propper played along with skipper James Tavernier and goalkeeper Liam Kelly. The match took place just 24 hours after TNS were held to a 1-1 draw by Scott Brown's Ayr United at East Kilbride's home ground K Park. It might not have been the result Martin would've hoped for but TNS are further ahead in their pre-season preparation as they returned for training much earlier given their campaign gets underway in less than two weeks. Ex-Rangers supremo David Murray on the club's new owners and why Gio shouldn't have been sacked The Welsh outfit also have Champions League qualifiers to attend to but they enter the competition in the first round qualfier, while Gers take on Panathinaikos in the second. As aforementioned, the first leg will take place at Ibrox but it won't be the first game fans can attend at the Govan stadium this month. That's because the Light Blues host Club Brugge next week on Sunday, July 6. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
