Prep talk: Can Corona baseball stay unbeaten in North Carolina?
The 14-0 Panthers are traveling to Cary, N.C., to begin competition on Wednesday at the National High School Invitational. Huntington Beach and La Mirada are joining them.

With 12 shutouts in 14 games and champions of the Boras Classic South, Corona gets to unleash its pitching depth once again. Coach Andy Wise plans to use the same rotation that won the Boras Classic, starting sophomore Mason Sims on the mound for their opener on Wednesday.
Huntington Beach (12-1) is in the opposite bracket of Corona. La Mirada (13-2) is in Corona's bracket and could face the Panthers for a third time this season. Corona continues to resemble a super team with pitchers Seth Hernandez and Ethin Bingaman, shortstop Billy Carlson and third baseman Brady Ebel and outfielder Anthony Murphy, who has hit six of the team's 26 home runs.
The championship game will be played on Saturday morning. . . .

It's been a long time since a Florida Panthers player graced the cover of a major NHL video game. Much like the franchise's extended playoff drought, decades between playoff series wins and 30 years without a championship, it was another streak that was due to end. On Monday, EA Sports and the NHL announced that Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk would be the cover athlete for NHL 26. It's a very logical selection. Tkachuk has helped Florida win back-to-back Stanley Cups and the Panthers are looking like the league's next dynasty. His ability to play such a unique style, equally combining elite hockey skills with relentless effort and physicality while also holding a mental edge over his opponents, has made Tkachuk one of the most polarizing players in the game. It's the first time a Panthers player has been selected for the cover of an EA Sports NHL release since John Vanbiesbrouck on NHL 97. A full preview for the game is set to come out on Wednesday, and the game itself is reportedly set for a Sept. 13 release. Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk will be the face of NHL 26
Matthew Tkachuk has been the face of the Florida Panthers for the past three years. He is becoming one of the faces of USA hockey, too, leading into the Winter Olympics in February. And now, he's the face of the NHL's annual video game. Tkachuk, the Panthers' star winger, will be the cover athlete for NHL 26, EA Sports unveiled on Monday. The full cover design for the game will be announced Wednesday on the EA Sports NHL YouTube channel. Tkachuk, who joined the Panthers via a blockbuster trade with the Calgary Flames ahead of the 2022-23 season, has helped turn the Panthers into a juggernaut. Florida has reached the Stanley Cup Final in all three of his seasons with the team and won it all each of the past two years. In that time, Tkachuk has logged 254 points (88 goals, 166 assists) in 211 regular-season games with the Panthers while adding another 69 points (25 goals, 44 assists) in 67 Stanley Cup playoffs games. He was tied for the team lead with 23 points during the team's run to a second consecutive Stanley Cup. Tkachuk also helped the United States win silver in the 4 Nations Face-Off in February and has already been named one of six players to be on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. Tkachuk is the second Panthers player to grace the cover of the video game's main cover. Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck was on the cover of NHL 97. Meanwhile, Olli Jokinen was on the cover of the European version of NHL 2005. It's the second time in the past three years a South Florida athlete has been the main cover athlete for a league's video game. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was on the cover of 2023 edition of MLB The Show when he was with the Miami Marlins.

Florida Panthers' Matthew Tkachuk named 'NHL 26' cover athlete
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will be on the cover of NHL 26, EA Sports announced Monday. A full reveal for the video game will premier Wednesday. "He's loud," EA Sports wrote on social media. "He's relentless. He's a problem. Now he's the face of the game." Tkachuk, 27, joined the Panthers through a 2022 trade from the Calgary Flames. The nine-year veteran made the Stanley Cup Final in each of his three seasons with the franchise, including their back-to-back title-winning campaigns in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Tkachuk tied Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart for the Panthers' team lead in postseason points, with 23 over 23 games. He scored eight goals and chipped in 15 assists during the Panthers' 2024-25 playoff run. NHL 26 is expected to be released in September. The NHL 26 preview will air Wednesday on YouTube.
