IND U19 vs ENG U19: After ODI woes, Ayush Mhatre bounces back with twin tons in Youth Tests vs England
Mumbai:
"When you're failing repeatedly, it's important to pause and reflect: 'What did I do well when I was succeeding?'" For India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre, things weren't going smoothly, until he shrugged off his poor form with back-to-back centuries (102 & 32 in the first Youth Test at Beckenham, followed by 80 & 126 off 80 balls at Chelmsford) against England U-19.
In the five-match Youth ODI series preceding the Tests, the 18-year-old reached double figures only once, with a sequence of 21, 0, 5 & 1. To make matters worse, he had to miss the final game of the series due to fever.

Coming off an impressive IPL debut—206 runs in six matches for MS Dhoni's

(CSK), Mhatre struggled to adjust to English conditions. Unlike the flat IPL tracks where batters can swing freely, the seaming pitches in England demand patience and technique.
It was clear that the teen was grappling with the transition.
In contrast, his 14-year-old opening partner Vaibhav Suryavanshi lived up to the buzz surrounding him. The southpaw smashed a 31-ball 86, followed by a 52-ball hundred (143 off 78 balls) in the fourth Youth ODI at Worcester.
Leading a team while struggling with form can be doubly challenging, especially for a teenager. But timely advice from his childhood coach, Prashant Shetty, helped Mhatre turn things around.

"He was being too hard on himself. He was looking to carry his IPL form into this this tour, which doesn't always happen. Before going into the test, I asked him to watch the videos of his centuries in the Ranji Trophy last season. He had hit a fine hundred against Services at the Palam Ground on a seaming track in Delhi (116 off 149 balls out of Mumbai's first innings total of 288. Mumbai won by nine wickets and Mhatre was named as the 'Player of the Match'), so it wasn't like he couldn't bat on the seaming tracks, or he had any technical issue.
As I said, it's just that he was trying too hard," Shetty told TOI.
Since his first-class debut in October last year, Mhatre has scored 504 runs in nine matches, including two centuries and a fifty. In seven List A games, he already has 458 runs with two tons.

"He and Suryavanshi are the only ones with first-class experience in the side. That certainly helps. Perhaps, he needed a change in format. The fact that he has done well in the red-ball format before gave him the confidence that he can bounce back and do well.
He told me that he was in better rhythm while batting in the pre-match nets at Beckenham," Shetty said.
Shetty also dismissed the idea that captaincy pressure affected Mhatre's batting. 'I asked him directly, and he said he felt no pressure from the role. At the junior level, most decisions are taken by the coach. I had also advised him to separate his captaincy from his batting.'
When Mhatre was appointed captain for the England tour, Mumbai head coach Omkar Salvi had told this paper: "Ayush is a lovely kid who's got a very calm head on his shoulders. Being around him in the dressing room gave me the feeling that he is someone who can definitely be a leader. He's very confident of himself and also a self-assured team man and that's going to keep this India Under-19 team in good stead. I wish him all the best and I'm sure he has many more leadership roles that beckons him in the near future.
"
Following his return from England, Mhatre's next assignment will be the Duleep Trophy in September, which will mark the start of the 2025-26 domestic season. This time, the tournament will be played on a zonal basis.

Indian batters hailed for 'fabulous display of resilience and character' after holding England to draw in Manchester
The trio of captain Shubman Gill (103), Ravindra Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington Sundar (101 not out) slammed centuries while KL Rahul scored a brave 90 as India held England to a draw after conceding a 311-run first innings deficit and getting reduced to 0/2 on Day 4. read more Ravindra Jadeja celebrates after completing his century while Washington Sundar applauds his teammate on Day 5 of the fourth Test between India and England in Manchester. Reuters The Indian batters produced a fightback for the ages on the last two days of the fourth Test against England in Manchester and keep the five-match series alive heading into the series finale at The Oval starting Thursday. England were staring at the prospect of clinching the series a game to spare after posting a mammoth 669 thanks to Joe Root and Ben Stokes' centuries and later reducing India to 0/2 with Chris Woakes getting rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the first over. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Captain Shubham Gill (103) and KL Rahul (90), however, had come to India's rescue on Day 4 with an unbroken 174-run stand. And after both batters departed in quick succession on Day 5 morning at Old Trafford, it was the turn of spin-bowling all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington Sundar (101 not out) to stand tall and defy the Englishmen. Jadeja and Sundar shine bright on Day 5 Jadeja and Sundar not only steadied the hosts after India found themselves at a precarious 222/4 following Gill's dismissal off Jofra Archer's bowling, they ended up forging an unbroken 203-run partnership for the fifth wicket that had England captain Ben Stokes himself walking up and offering a draw at the start of the final hour of the final day. And Stokes and his teammates weren't too pleased when the two Indian all-rounders turned down their offer, only to shake hands shortly after, just so they could bring up their centuries. Not only was the Indian team felicitated on social media for their heroics with the bat towards the end of the Manchester Test, there were also those criticising the hosts for the way they acted in the final minutes of what turned out to be another riveting contest between these two teams. Here are select reactions: When it comes to India-England, Old Trafford is known for keeping the series alive. Congratulations, Team India, on a fantastic comeback. @klrahul, @ShubmanGill, @imjadeja, and @Sundarwashi5, showed great character and fighting spirit. Good luck for the final Test. India will be eyeing a second consecutive 2-2 draw on English soil, although this time they will be the ones drawing level should they end up on the winning side at The Oval.

IPL 2026: Nitish Kumar Reddy Breaks Silence On His Future With Sunrisers Hyderabad Amid Trade Rumours
India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has broken silence on his future with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) amid the trade rumours. According to a report from India Today, Nitish had expressed his desire to leave SRH over his role in the team, especially after being pushed down the batting order. However, the 22-year-old all-rounder on Sunday took to social media to issue clarification, saying that he will always stand by his current IPL team. "I tend to stay away from the noise, but some things deserve clarity. My connection with SRH is built on trust, respect, and years of shared passion. I'll always stand by this team," wrote Reddy on his 'X' account. Ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction, Visakhapatnam-based Reddy was retained by SRH at Rs six crore. It came after Reddy amassed 303 runs in 13 matches and also took three wickets in IPL 2024, which paved his way for selection into India T20I and Test teams. But Reddy failed to repeat his heroics in IPL 2025 - scoring only 182 runs in 13 games and didn't bowl a lot of overs due to his recovery from a side strain which kept him out of action after the first T20I against England earlier this year.

Shubman Gill on handshake controversy - 'They deserved the centuries'
India batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refuted to shake hands with England captain Ben Stokes. (Screengrab) It was a Test without any drama, but it ended on a sour note. At the beginning of the final hour, Ben Stokes offered to shake hands and call it a draw. The Indian batsmen, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, declined. It left Ben Stokes and the England players quite furious. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington — batting on 89 and 80 respectively — flatly refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match, they exercised their rights to continue batting. Stokes had a few words to say, as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were also seen enquiring why India wanted to carry on. "Do you want to score a hundred against Harry Brook?" Stokes asked sarcastically, and all Jadeja said was, "I can't do anything." A smiling Jadeja maintained his grace and calmly brushed off the comments, as India, as per the rules, were well within their rights to continue batting. Poll Should Jadeja and Sundar have accepted Stokes' handshake offer for a draw? Yes, it was the fair sportsmanship move No, they played well and deserved to continue Maybe, it depends on the situation I have no opinion on this matter In what seemed like a mark of protest, Stokes introduced Harry Brook into the attack, and Jadeja hit him for a six to complete his third Test hundred. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Struggling With Belly Fat? The first, against Australia on this ground two years ago, was due to almost two days of rain. This is a new experience for the team, which may partly explain why they were so grouchy towards the end. The fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will start on July 31 at The Oval.
