German Football Federation managing director Andreas Rettig has expressed surprise at critical media reports regarding national coach Julian Nagelsmann's absence from the Under-21 European Championship.
Antonio Di Salvo's Germany have reached the semi-finals in Slovakia, where they meet France on Wednesday. Senior squad coach Nagelsmann says he will come to Bratislava if they make the final, but media reports have suggested he should have been there earlier.

"This is a bit of a German phenomenon. Jogi Löw was criticized as national coach for supposedly only watching games in Freiburg. When it came to Jürgen Klinsmann, the country practically fell apart because he wasn't diligent enough in sitting in the stands at matches. And so on. I don't want to take part in this discussion," Rettig told Sky Sport.
Gennaro Gattuso, who recently took over as coach of the Italian senior team, has been in Slovakia. But Rettig pointed out that the coaches of England and France have not.
"I watched the games on site. I didn't see Mr Tuchel, Mr Deschamps or other coaches. Mr Gattuso was there because he had just started his new job," Rettig said.
The former player and Bundesliga sporting director emphasised that Nagelsmann is deeply engaged with the Under-21 team.
"You can be sure that Julian not only takes a great interest but also assesses the games in detail," Rettig said.

Reid captures America's only boxing gold, knocking down Cuban Alfredo Duvergel, while the U.S. women roll to a 111-87 victory behind Lisa Leslie's 29 points. A record 11,000 athletes from 197 countries make it the biggest Olympics. 2007 — 32-year-old Alex Rodriguez becomes the youngest player in MLB history to hit 500 home runs. 2011 — Cappie Pondexter scores 15 points to lead New York past Chicago 59-49, and the Liberty hold the Sky to a WNBA-record one point in the fourth quarter. 2012 — Michael Phelps wins another gold medal as the United States wins the medley relay at the London Olympics. Cavaliers pick Saliou Niang leads Italy to win over Iceland in EuroBasket exhibition

Cleveland Cavaliers draft pick Saliou Niang led Italy to a win over Iceland on Saturday in its first exhibition ahead of the 2025 EuroBasket Championship in Trento. Niang produced a game-high 17 points and six rebounds, Simone Fontecchio had 14 points and Gabriele Procida added 12 points in the 87-61 victory at Il T Quotidiano Arena. Niang finished by shooting 8-of-10 from the field in 17 minutes. Italy will play six preparation games before facing Greece to open the tournament on Aug. 28. In addition to Fontecchio, Niang and Procida, the group is also headlined by former NBA forward Nicolò Melli, who didn't play on Saturday (rest). Niang was the 58th pick in the 2025 NBA draft after averaging 7.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 51.3% shooting from the field last season with Dolomiti Energia Trento. He helped the team to the Italian Cup and was the Italian Lega A Most Improved Player. He neared a double-double on July 13 with six points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Niang will play next season with Virtus Bologna after signing with the team on July 16. He will have the opportunity to continue his development and work toward joining the Cavaliers in the future.

The path is there for Alexander Zverev to win his first Masters 1000 title of 2025. Zverev, the No. 1 seed in the tournament with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner sitting out, is a -275 favorite against Francisco Cerundolo in the Round of 16 at the Canadian Masters, and he's staring down a potential contest with Holger Rune in the quarterfinals. You need to be careful not to project too far ahead, but Zverev would fancy his chances against any of the potential opponents out of the second quarterfinal in the semifinals. Tennis Abstract gives Zverev just about a 1-in-4 chance of winning the title at ATP Toronto, but the German does have a habit of muddying up these opportunities lately. ATP Toronto: Zverev vs. Cerundolo odds, predictions Player Odds Alexander Zverev -350 Francisco Cerundolo +275 Odds via bet365 It feels like the tennis world has been expecting a true breakout year from Cerundolo for a while. The Argentinian has cemented his spot in the top 30, and he does have three career titles, but more has been expected of the 26-year-old, at least in terms of trophies. What's even more confusing is that Cerundolo's has never had too much of an issue punching up. He is 6-4 against top-10 opponents in 2025, and 15-16 in his career, making him one of the best players outside the top 10 at going toe-to-toe with the sport's elite players. Cerundolo will draw even more confidence from the fact that he is 3-0 against Zverev in his career, and he's catching the German at a good time. Francisco Cerundolo is 15-16 against top-10 opponents in his career. John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images Zverev lost in the opening round at Wimbledon and has been inconsistent since winning a title in Munich back in April. The World No. 3 didn't make things easy on himself in Round 1 of this tournament against Matteo Arnaldi either. Cerundolo can be an infuriating opponent with his relentlessness and ability to defend, and that should give Zverev plenty of chances to spiral.
