'I believe I was born unique with many talents, and I always wanted to do something major in my life of sports. Something that will be recognised in the world of sports, which will do justice to my God-given talents and inspire a lot of people in the process,' he stated.
The 41-year-old member of the Chillie Running Club began his Comrades journey in 2014 with the Eskom Athletic Club, where he secured a bronze medal with an impressive time of 10:27:54. His personal best in the Comrades Marathon sits at 08:40:02, earning him the esteemed Bill Rowan Medal.
As a proud KZN-born athlete, The General grew up immersed in the culture of the Comrades Marathon, a cornerstone of life's experiences in KZN. While soccer was his initial focus, and he achieved considerable success from junior through senior levels, his dream of running the Comrades Marathon was always in sight, officially realised in 2014.
'My wish was always to get to a point where I get crowned as the Legend of the Game, which eventually happened on June 8 during Comrades Marathon 2025,' he explained.
Reflecting on his decade-long journey, Malinga acknowledges it was fraught with challenges – both good and bad. Over the years, he faced injuries, career-related relocations, and the loss of loved ones, including his parents. Nevertheless, he persevered and emerged victorious.

Abdeslam Ouaddou ready to manage all characters at Orlando Pirates
New Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou is embracing the challenge of building on past success while managing big personalities — including star signing Sipho Mbule — as the Sea Robbers set sail for league glory. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Abdeslam Ouaddou is made of sterner stuff. And as such, he knows the buck will stop with him in making sure the Sea Robbers sail into steady waters. Ouaddou was appointed as Orlando Pirates' new head coach last month, taking over the reins from José Riveiro, who joined Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The Moroccan-born coach arrived at the club fully aware that the job is no small task — he must pick up where Riveiro left off and address the team's shortcomings. Riveiro had an impressive tenure, leading Pirates to five trophies and three successive second-place league finishes during his three-year spell. Speaking to Pirates TV recently, Ouaddou applauded the Spaniard's achievements and insisted that the solid foundation and momentum must not go to waste. Video Player is loading. 'I like the philosophy of positional play, and I like to score quickly,' Ouaddou explained. 'You can see we scored a lot of goals last season, and over the years Pirates have come close to challenging the log leaders. But at the same time, we need to improve in some areas, which would help us go forward and eventually win the league.' He identified defensive transitions as a key focus. 'We need to try to work on that together as a unit. I think it's a good team, and I like it. We have to keep the legacy, the work that has already been done well. Usually, when a coach comes in, he wants to destroy everything. But we have to be clever — analyse what worked and then build on that foundation.' While Ouaddou sees no sense in fixing what isn't broken, Pirates seem ready to usher in a new era, having signed nine new players already this winter. The influx of fresh faces is sure to bring a mix of personalities — potentially a selection headache for the coaching staff and club bosses. But Ouaddou, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career that included a spell at English Premier League club Fulham, is unfazed. 'I don't want only nice boys. I want some tough boys. I'll manage them — no problem,' he said. 'I need different characters. "Coaches often want only nice boys so they don't have to manage them. But in a team, you need all types — calm people, strong people, sometimes even a few crazy guys. It's my job to bring all these personalities together and make the connections work.' Among the new signings is Sipho Mbule — one of South Africa's most talented playmakers, but a player whose career has been punctuated by disciplinary issues at former clubs SuperSport United, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Sekhukhune United.

Kyalami Corner Midrand Striders Half-Marathon returns this August
Midrand Striders Running Club is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of its signature race, now officially rebranded as the Kyalami Corner Midrand Striders Half-Marathon. Read more: Midrand Striders celebrates 97% success rate at Comrades Marathon 2025 Building on last year's incredible success and vibrant partnership with Kyalami Corner Shopping Centre, this year's event promises to be even bigger and better, when it takes place on August 31. After an impressive turnout of 1 800 athletes, and a flawlessly executed event last year, the club aims to elevate the experience this year with a goal of surpassing 2 500 participants. Race director Gabriel Mphahlele emphasised the synergy of this collaboration, noting that the partnership with Kyalami Corner exceeded expectations when they decided to host the race, resulting in a perfect match. 'Since then, this partnership has expanded beyond the half-marathon. We now also begin our weekly time-trial runs at Kyalami Corner, creating a vibrant hub for fitness enthusiasts and strengthening the bond between the centre and our running community.' This year's half-marathon will feature three race distances: 21.1 km, 10 km, and 5 km, with entries closing on August 22. A portion of the race proceeds will be allocated to support underprivileged individuals and groups, removing barriers that prevent their participation in the sport. 'This contribution will go toward providing essential running gear, entry fees, and training support, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from the running community,' Mphahlele added. This year's event will also be significant for the Midrand Striders, as they celebrate their remarkable success at the Comrades Marathon, achieving an outstanding 97% finish rate, with every female and novice runner from the club crossing the finish line. To enhance the race experience in 2025, the club will offer race T-shirts, at cost price, and significantly increase the prize money to exceptionally competitive levels. Interested participants can secure their spots by signing up for the Kyalami Corner Midrand Striders Half-Marathon 2025 and visiting for online entries. What Kaizer Chiefs can expect from their 'new playmaker'
Kaizer Chiefs new signing Ethan Chislett is decribed as a technically gifted midfielder with an ability to score goals. His former coach at Port Vale, Andy Crosby has opened up on the attributes of the Durban-born midfielder who joined Amakhosi a few weeks ago. The 26-year-old is one of the six new Amakhosi signings ahead of the new season. 'His technical ability to receive in tight spaces, his ability to play the last pass (assist) and his ability to score,' Crosby told Soccer Laduma . 'He progressed throughout his first season, grew more comfortable in his new club and with his teammates and style of play,' Chislett has scored 13 goals in 68 league appearances for The Valiants across two seasons, in two different league levels. It remains to be seen if the Durban-born midfielder will outperform other new Kaizer Chiefs signings. This past weekend, the Soweto giants announced the signing of former SuperSport United midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu. Before that, the club revealed that former Orlando Pirates duo of Thabiso Monyane and Paseko Mako were part of the Khosi family. Other new signings include Flavio Silva and Nkanyiso Shinga. Kaizer Chiefs are currently in the Netherlands for their pre-season training and will play in several friendly matches next week.
