Why Women Are Weary of the Emotional Labor of ‘Mankeeping'
Much of the time, Mr. Lioi said, his straight male clients tell him that they rarely open up to anyone but their girlfriends or wives. Their partners have become their unofficial therapists, he said, 'doing all the emotional labor.'
That particular role now has a name: 'mankeeping.' The term, coined by Angelica Puzio Ferrara, a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, has taken off online. It describes the work women do to meet the social and emotional needs of the men in their lives, from supporting their partners through daily challenges and inner turmoil, to encouraging them to meet up with their friends.
'What I have been seeing in my research is how women have been asked or expected to take on more work to be a central — if not the central — piece of a man's social support system,' Ms. Ferrara said, taking care to note that the dynamic isn't experienced by all couples.
The concept has taken on a bit of a life of its own, with some articles going so far as to claim that mankeeping has 'ruined' dating and driven women to celibacy. We talked to Ms. Ferrara and other experts about what mankeeping is and isn't, and how to tell if it has seeped into your relationship.
Mankeeping isn't just emotional intimacy.
Ms. Ferrara, who researches male friendship at Stanford's Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and Dylan Vergara, a research assistant, published a paper on mankeeping in 2024, after investigating why some men struggle to form close bonds — a growing and well-documented issue.

Carolyn Hax: Girlfriend's fury at partner's job is so raw they can't discuss it
Adapted from an online discussion. Dear Carolyn: My girlfriend gets angry when I talk about my job. I'm an editor at a web site and she is a project manager working with government contractors. She gets actively angry about my job for a variety of reasons. Sometimes she is mad that the website crashes, or she hates the way ads block the content. I offer to submit bug and crash reports, but she expects me to speak up at weekly editorial meetings to declare that things must change, must be fixed.

Miss Manners: Secure, confident spouse forbids wife to sit by anyone else
Dear Miss Manners: If I found my that my wife and I were to be seated separately at a party, I would move my place card or leave the party with her. There are two primary duties that married couples — and, arguably, dating couples — have that supersede their 'duty' to the host of a gathering: protection of and fidelity to their spouse, neither of which is served by splitting couples up. Parties are often not safe in either respect, especially when alcohol is involved.

I've written about beauty for 5 years — here are 6 products I continue to re-buy
These beauty products are good to the last drop — trust me, I've finished them all. As someone who reviews and writes about products for a living, you would be right to assume that I've tried my fair share of beauty goodies. From dermatologist-recommended anti-aging essentials to products that found their fame on TikTok, I have tried a lot — and I mean a lot — of beauty products. Because my beauty cabinet resembles that of a small but stocked Sephora, I rarely re-buy something once I've finished it. Often, even though I love and truly recommend something, I have 10 more of its kind waiting to be tested, so a product has to be something extra special to warrant a repeat purchase. Finishing a product in earnest is not only a testament to its efficacy, but how often I reach for it in my day-to-day routine. I re-buy so rarely that when I do, it's worth a shout-out. If you keep scrolling, you'll find a list of beauty products that fit the following criteria: A) they're empty or nearly empty and B) I have re-purchased them in the past or am planning to do so in the near future. From my favourite-ever toner to the perfect sunscreen for oily skin, read on to shop my beauty empties.
