Govt bans import of dummy seat belt buckles
PETALING JAYA : The government has moved to ban the import of mechanisms such as dummy buckles and seat belt alarm stoppers, effective Dec 31.
The move was announced through the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2025, published in the federal gazette.
The order prohibits the import of 'dummy buckles, seat belt alarm stoppers, seat belt clip extenders or any other similar accessory or device intended to be inserted into a seat belt buckle to disable or bypass the safety reminder and render the seat belt mechanism inoperative'.
The transport ministry previously said it was in talks with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry to introduce a ban on dummy buckles, following concerns over their widespread use to silence seat belt alarms.
During a Chinese New Year traffic operation in Negeri Sembilan, authorities found that nearly 30% of 195 offenders caught for not wearing seat belts had used dummy buckles to avoid triggering the warning alert.

UPSI bus crash survivors to get OKU card, says Noraini

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Students who suffered permanent disabilities in the fatal bus crash that occurred on the East-West Highway near Gerik earlier this month will be issued with an OKU (persons with disabilities) card. This was revealed by deputy women, family and community development minister Noraini Ahmad, who said her ministry is compiling details of the students affected, Bernama reported. She said the social welfare department (JKM) is assisting the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who sustained permanent disabilities by processing their applications for the OKU card. She added that the ministry is also reaching out to those who suffered other long-term injuries in the June 9 incident. 'The exact number of affected students is still being gathered as we are awaiting medical assessments,' the Wanita Umno chief told reporters after a party meeting in Kepala Batas, Penang today. She said counselling sessions are ongoing for survivors and the families of those who died, including the family in the Perodua Alza involved in the crash, as many remain traumatised. 'Ongoing psychological support is crucial, especially for those grieving the loss of loved ones. I visited the Alza family yesterday and they are still visibly affected,' she said, according to Bernama. Fifteen people were killed when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jerteh, Terengganu to the Tanjung Malim campus overturned and hit a car with four passengers, before crashing into the barrier on the side of the road. The accident involved a total of 48 victims, 13 of whom died at the scene and two others at the hospital. Separately, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said universities must closely monitor any initiatives taken independently by their students, including the chartering of tour buses to return to their hometowns during the holiday season. He said such oversight was crucial to prevent any untoward incidents involving students. 'I urge universities to maintain communication and monitor any self-initiated plans by students,' he told reporters after visiting the home of the late Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the UPSI students who died in the bus crash, in Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, in Jerteh today. Zambry said the ministry is reviewing various views and suggestions for improvement following the tragic incident, including proposals to schedule student travel during the day instead of at night. 'We take note of all the concerns raised, especially on social media, to prevent any untoward incidents,' he said.

Not a crime to leave babies at baby hatch, says minister

Speaking to FMT, Nancy said such acts are not considered a criminal offence as long as there are no elements of wrongdoing, such as physical abuse. She was commenting about a recent case of a 14-day-old baby boy who was left at the baby hatch of a private medical centre in Kuching. The Borneo Post reported that the baby was found fully clothed with a feeding bottle and a handwritten note that read 'Izzy Haziq (L), 14/6/2025 @ 11.40PM.' The case has sparked debate online, with some social media users questioning the purpose of baby hatches, while others questioned the need for the welfare department to trace the mother. Nancy said the department encourages mothers to come forward to help register their child's birth and confirm their citizenship, as babies left at baby hatches must have their birth, nationality, and guardianship status verified for legal protection. 'This requires the involvement of the mother – even in a minimal capacity – to assist with investigation and documentation by authorities such as the national registration department. 'All information shared by the mother is confidential and protected by law. The welfare department ensures this process is carried out with respect, ethics, and in line with the best interests of the child,' she said. Nancy said there are mechanisms in place to legally register babies even if the mothers do not come forward, thus ensuring the child is not left undocumented.

Major Klang Valley roads to be rerouted in stages for Asean meeting from July 8 to 11
KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Traffic on three highways and 15 main roads in the Klang Valley will be diverted in stages from 8 to 11 July in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and Related Meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Yusri Hassan Basri said the affected routes comprised roads into and out of the federal capital, as well as routes to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and hotels where delegates will be staying. He said a dry run for the motorcade, covering routes from the airport to the respective hotels in Kuala Lumpur and the KLCC, would be conducted from today until Sunday involving 391 JSPT personnel. 'Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance and are encouraged to use public transport in support of the event. 'Commercial and heavy vehicles are advised not to enter the city centre during the road diversion period, particularly during peak hours, to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of breakdowns and accidents,' he said in a statement here today.
