PM Modi leaves for Rio de Janeiro to attend 17th BRICS Summit

Buenos Aires/New Delhi, July 5 (UNI) After concluding his visit to Argentina, where he held talks with President Javier Milei, Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Brazil today, to attend the 17th BRICS Summit at Rio de Janeiro and for a state visit to Brasilia.
He said in a post on X: 'My visit to Argentina has been a productive one. I am confident that our discussions will add significant momentum to our bilateral friendship and fulfil the strong potential that exists. I thank President Milei, the Government, and the people of Argentina for their warmth.'
Earlier, the PM also paid homage at a bust of poet Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Buenos Aires.
'Paid homage to Gurudev Tagore in Buenos Aires. Gurudev Tagore had visited Argentina in 1924 and had left a lasting impression on the minds of many people in this nation, especially scholars and students.
'We in India take immense pride in the contributions of Gurudev Tagore to our nation's history and culture. His emphasis on learning and education is also very motivating.'
In Buenos Aires, the PM was also presented with the Key to the City from Jorge Macri, Chief of the City Government of Buenos Aires, in a ceremonial honour in recognition of PM's contributions in strengthening the bilateral ties.
Brazil is the fourth leg of the PM's five-nation visit. He has already visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina.

17th BRICS Summit strongly condemns Pahalgam terror attack

Rio de Janeiro/New Delhi, July 6 (UNI) The 17th BRICS Summit today strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms, including cross-border terrorism and terror financing. The 17th BRICS Summit in a joint statement, said on terrorism: 'We express strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed. 'We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, during which 26 people were killed and many more injured. 'We reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens. 'We reiterate that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group and that all those involved in terrorist activities and their support must be held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with relevant national and international law. 'We urge to ensure zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards in countering terrorism. 'We emphasize the primary responsibility of States in combating terrorism and that global efforts to prevent and counter terrorist threats must fully comply with their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the purposes and principles thereof, and relevant international conventions and protocols, in particular international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, as applicable. 'We welcome the activities of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group (CTWG) and its five Subgroups based upon the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Action Plan and the CTWG position paper. 'We look forward to further deepening counter-terrorism cooperation. We call for an expeditious finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism in the UN framework. 'We call for concerted actions against all UN designated terrorists and terrorist entities.' The BRICS is a group formed by eleven countries: its five original members – Brazil, China, India, Russia, and South Africa --and six new members admitted in 2024-25 - Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. It serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries from the Global South and for coordination in the most diverse areas. Recently, India faced an inhuman and cowardly terrorist attack in Pahalgam. This was an attack on all of humanity,' the prime minister said during the summit in Brazil. PM Modi is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he is participating at the BRICS Summit along with global leaders. Earlier in the day, Modi, while addressing the 17th BRICS Summit, called for an urgent need for comprehensive reforms in global institutions to address the marginalisation of the Global South. PM Modi said that the Global South has been handed nothing more than token gestures on climate finance, sustainable development and technology access. The prime minister, along with other world leaders, also participated in the traditional family photo session at the summit held at the Museum of Modern Art in Brazil's Rio de Janeiro. The photo marked a significant moment of unity and collaboration among the countries that the grouping represents. The summit, hosted by Brazil from July 7 to July 9, saw leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia coming together during the event.
