Arne Slot eyes former Rangers manager to beef up Liverpool backroom staff

Independent12-06-2025
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is a leading contender to join Liverpool's coaching staff as Arne Slot looks for a replacement for the departed Johnny Heitinga.
Slot is considering the case of his fellow Dutchman as he looks to beef up his backroom team after Heitinga left to become manager of Ajax.
Van Bronckhorst has an extensive managerial career in his own right after taking charge of Feyenoord, Guangzhou, Rangers and Besiktas.
The 50-year-old was Rangers manager when they lost 7-1 to Jurgen Klopp 's Liverpool but also took them to the Europa League final.
Like Slot, he won the Eredivisie title while in charge of Feyenoord. The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder and left-back was also a Champions League winner as a player in 2006 and captained the Netherlands in the 2010 World Cup final, his final match before retiring.
Slot has a long working relationship with Sipke Hulshoff, his assistant at Feyenoord, but brought former Everton player Heitinga on board last summer, aware of his greater experience in the Premier League.

Max Aarons explains what Rangers have already done under Russell Martin that makes him sense success

The Light Blues navigated a tricky test in Panathinaikos to progress in the Champions League Max Aarons believes Rangers are ready to answer Russell Martin's call and storm all the way back into the Champions League proper. ‌ The Bournemouth loanee isn't thinking about the Europa League safety net secured by the battling victory over Panathinaikos - as he wants to be among Europe's elite. ‌ Rangers still have two huge hurdles to clear if they're to return to the top table for the first time in three years. ‌ Czechs Victoria Plzn are up next with a play-off round awaiting the winner. Martin has challenged his players to reach for the stars. And Aarons reckons the resilience shown in Wednesday's Panathinaikos pressure pot proves they should be targeting the money-spinning league phase rather than settling for another crack at the Europa. He said: 'Of course. The manager spoke about it: coming to this club, you have to really respect that you're going to hopefully be part of big competitions and big European nights. We have to earn that. 'Nights like Wednesday give you the confidence that this team can suffer at times and dig in and come through it. 'We want to go as far as we can now. I came here because I believe this team can make the Champions League. 'That's got to be the ultimate goal, doing it the way we want and the way we want to play.' ‌ Aarons is one of seven summer recruits already in the door as Martin overhauls his squad. With just five weeks' preparation the new boss and his new-look side were thrown in at the deep end with the qualifiers against the Greek giants. But they came through heavy pressure in both legs to secure a huge 3-1 win on aggregate. ‌ Martin's possession-based style has placed huge demands on his players. But Aarons reckons confidence has soared on the back of their Athens success. He said: 'Five weeks in, you never know. We've prepared as much as we could, but you never know going into that first game how it's going to feel. ‌ 'Coming through that, growing into that game, ideally we'd start better in this game again. But coming here, you have to ride a little bit of pressure. 'To be in any successful team, you have to be able to do that and come through those moments. Yes, we want to dominate games more, but I think this is a really, really good step for us now. ' ‌ Martin's men have little time to recover before another huge test in tomorrow's Premiership opener at Motherwell. Rangers have failed to win on the opening day in both the last two seasons. And the 25-year-old full back knows it's vital they get off to a Fir Park flier and lay down and early marker. He said: 'Of course, it's going to be different in the league. But like I said, that confidence and robustness that you build from playing game in, game out is what you want. You don't want to be waiting a week or 10 days for your next game. 'It's important that we all recover as well as possible, so that come Saturday we can start the league season with a big win. 'It's a big game and we have to take [care of] that now. This confidence coming to Panathinaikos, that is not an easy game and we have to take that into the league, where I believe we can beat anyone.'

GASS IS SHEER CLASS! New Rangers star Djeidi Gassama will strike fear in the hearts of Scottish Premiership defenders, predicts Ibrox team-mate Max Aarons

Rangers full-back Max Aarons believes Djeidi Gassama will put fear in the hearts of opposing defenders throughout this season. Named as a substitute against Panathinaikos despite scoring in the first leg, Gassama made an instant impact from the bench with a flashing strike to square the game in Athens on Wednesday and secure Rangers' progression to the third qualifying round of the Champions League. A £2.2million signing from Sheffield Wednesday, the 21-year-old already looks to be the standout among the seven players manager Russell Martin has brought in so far. Aarons, who played in both full-back positions in the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night, feels his new team-mate will already be on the minds of his defensive rivals in the Scottish Premiership. 'If I was playing right-back for the opposition and I see him get ready to warm up at 60, 70 minutes, with all his youth and enthusiasm and his pace and ability, I really wouldn't want that,' said the 25-year-old Englishman. 'Obviously, he'll want to be starting games, but to have him at the moment in these two games coming on and making the impact that he is, it's amazing for him. 'I was pleasantly surprised at the ability I've seen from him in training and games now and, as a player that's a bit older now, I'll try to help him to really shine and perform for us this season. All his team-mates will. 'I think he can have a great year. I'm really, really excited by him as a player.' Rangers now face Viktoria Plzen in the next round with the first leg at Ibrox on Tuesday and the return in the Czech Republic a week later. Plzen finished a distant second behind Slavia Prague in their league last season and reached the last 16 of the Europa League, where they lost to Lazio. This week's result in Greece means Martin's side are guaranteed European group-stage football until Christmas, but Aarons is adamant that the sole focus is clearing two more hurdles and qualifying for the Champions League. 'The manager spoke about it before. Coming to this club, you have to really respect that you're going to hopefully be part of big competitions and big European nights and we have to earn that,' added Aarons. 'Nights like this give you that confidence that this team can suffer at times and dig in and come through it. 'We want to go as far as we can now. I definitely came here because I believe this team can make the Champions League. That's got to be the ultimate goal, doing it the way we want and the way we want to play.'

Askou refuses to rule out Miller involvement against Rangers

Manager Jens Berthel Askou has refused to rule out in-demand Lennon Miller featuring in Motherwell's Scottish Premiership opener with Rangers on Scotland midfielder played in the Fir Park side's pre-season friendlies but missed the League Cup group matches with a minor gave no update on the bids the Lanarkshire club have received for the teenager but revealed he could be part of the squad this weekend."He was partially in training [on Thursday] and almost full training [on Friday]," the Dane said prior to Saturday's match at Fir Park."Then we'll take a decision on whether it's time for him to be part of the team again on Saturday or whether it's too late while all the other things are working in background."On whether the club has accepted a bid for Miller, Askou replied: "That is a question not for me but for the board."The former Copenhagen coach, who would not reveal how many teams are interested in Miller, added: "A lot of things are going on. Interest is increasing every day and every week."We'll see when we can say more. There have been some bids and that intensifies the situation around him."In terms of incomings, Askou wants to "add more depth, more quality and more competition" - but his immediate focus is on former Norwich player, who was a team-mate of Ibrox boss Russell Martin at Carrow Road, is aiming to implement a brave and expansive style at Fir Park - and he does not want his side to shy away from that approach on Saturday."I expect us to do what we want to do and not let the level of Rangers stress us and take away our courage," Askou said.
