Atkinson has played 12 Tests for England so far and has picked up 55 wickets. He is England's highest-ranked Test bowler.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Sunday (July 6) added fast bowler Gus Atkinson to their squad for the third Test against India. The third Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England is scheduled to take place at Lord's in London from July 10 to 14.
Atkinson, who made his England's Test debut last year and has a total of 55 wickets to his name in 12 matches played so far, missed the first couple of matches in Leeds and Birmingham due to a hamstring injury that he suffered in four-day Test played against Zimbabwe in May 2025 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.
'The England Men's selection panel has added Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson to the squad for the Rothesay third Test match against India at Lord's, starting on Thursday, July 10. The 27-year-old Surrey fast bowler returns to the England Test setup after sustaining a right hamstring injury in our victory over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge in May," ECB tweeted.
There is a high possibility that he will play for the English team in the third Test along with fast bowler Jofra Archer. It will, however, be interesting to see who makes way for them.
Spinner Shoaib Bashir is the only spinner in England's Test squad, and after his poor show with the ball in the first two matches, there is a possibility that he could make way for one of the two pacers.
Brydon Carse is another pacer who could be dropped for the red-ball match at the Home of Cricket in three days's time.
After leading India to a 336-run win over the English team in the second Test played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday, India's Test captain Shubman Gill also confirmed that world No. 1 Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah will play at the Home of Cricket.
'Definitely (Bumrah back at Lord's?). Very excited for that (Lord's Test)," Gill said during the post-match presentation on Sunday.
