Nasser Sings Praises Of Gill's Captaincy! Says 'Got Most Things Spot-On...'
Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised India skipper Shubman Gill for his precise captaincy during the morning session of day five in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Edgbaston.
Despite rain reducing the day's play by 10 overs, India edged closer to a notable victory in the first session. Akash Deep dismissed overnight batters Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, and Washington Sundar trapped Ben Stokes lbw just before lunch, leaving England at 153/6 in 40.3 overs.
With England needing 455 more runs, India is optimistic about taking the remaining four wickets in the 55.3 overs left. 'England had done quite a bit of the hard work. Stokes, who hasn't spent a lot of time in the middle, was beginning to find his rhythm and the ball was getting soft.
'So it was a really good decision to notice it had just flicked the front pad (for Stokes' lbw dismissal) and for Gill to bowl off-spinner Washington. Gill has got most things spot-on in that session and even done things most of us wouldn't – the end Deep bowled at," Hussain was quoted as saying on Sky Sports during the lunch break.
Former England skipper Michael Atherton felt losing Stokes at lunch's stroke was a significant setback for the hosts. 'India wanted Stokes on strike and that was a hammer blow for England. Stokes played nicely but he is gone and delight for India."
Hussain also commended Akash, who currently has figures of 4-58 and took 4-88 in the first innings. 'I think he is a highly-skilled bowler – and at you all the time. It's not just the cracks in the pitch (why he has had success). He is a wonderful bowler."
After claiming two wickets late on Day 4, the right-arm fast bowler continued his impressive spell by quickly removing Ollie Pope (24) and Harry Brook (23), tightening India's hold on the match.
Stokes became the third batter to fall on the day as Washington trapped him leg before in the last over before the break.

Led by Akash Deep's 10-wicket match haul and Mohammed Siraj's first-innings six-for, India seamers picked up 17 wickets to England pacer's eight in the match. When quizzed on the Test Match Special, if England wanted to continue playing on such flat-bed surfaces, Stokes countered that the conditions ended up mirroring pitches in India, which suited the visitors. 'To be honest, it's probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it got deeper and deeper into the game. 'Then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just became a real tough slug for us and obviously with the Indian attack and the conditions that they're used to, they were sort of used to and knew sort of how to expose those conditions just sort of a little bit better than us and that can happen sometimes. But yeah, it's nothing to be too disheartened about. We can take being out-skilled and we've certainly been out-skilled this week,' said Stokes. England head coach Brendon McCullum, meanwhile, rued the team's decision to bowl first. 'I think, as the game unfolded, we probably looked back on that toss and said did we miss an opportunity there and it's probably fair. We didn't expect that the wicket would play quite as it did and hence we probably got it slightly wrong. But we did have them 200 for 5 and we weren't able to capitalise on that position and when you win the toss and bowl you're hoping to, well you're not anticipating the opposition's going to score 580 and then from that point we're behind the game,' McCullum told reporters. India and England will square off in the third Test at Lord's, starting Thursday.

Stokes hints at Jofra Archer's return for Lord's Test against India
Birmingham [UK], July 7 (ANI): After England's heavy 336-run defeat to India, captain Ben Stokes hinted at the possibility of Jofra Archer returning to the Test XI for the second match at Lord's, but stressed that the decision will depend on how players recover ahead of the game. 'Again, it will be a decision that we have to make seeing how everyone pulls up. We've had him here this week to get around the group and build him up with his workloads and everything like that. So everyone's in consideration for the game at Lord's,' said Stokes at the post-match press conference. The 30-year-old speedster recently made his long-awaited return to red-ball cricket after more than four years, representing Sussex in a County Championship match against Durham at Chester-le-Street. He bowled a tidy spell, returning figures of 1/32 from 18 overs, and also contributed 31 runs with the bat, showing signs of form and fitness as the match ended in a draw. Archer last played a Test match in February 2021, and has since battled multiple injuries. While he made a return to England's white-ball setup ahead of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and has featured in ODIs and T20Is, his red-ball workload has been carefully managed.
