Nasser Sings Praises Of Gill's Captaincy! Says 'Got Most Things Spot-On...'

Nasser Hussain praised India skipper Shubman Gill for his captaincy on day five of the second Test at Edgbaston.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised India skipper Shubman Gill for his precise captaincy during the morning session of day five in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Edgbaston.
Despite rain reducing the day's play by 10 overs, India edged closer to a notable victory in the first session. Akash Deep dismissed overnight batters Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, and Washington Sundar trapped Ben Stokes lbw just before lunch, leaving England at 153/6 in 40.3 overs.
With England needing 455 more runs, India is optimistic about taking the remaining four wickets in the 55.3 overs left. 'England had done quite a bit of the hard work. Stokes, who hasn't spent a lot of time in the middle, was beginning to find his rhythm and the ball was getting soft.
'So it was a really good decision to notice it had just flicked the front pad (for Stokes' lbw dismissal) and for Gill to bowl off-spinner Washington. Gill has got most things spot-on in that session and even done things most of us wouldn't – the end Deep bowled at," Hussain was quoted as saying on Sky Sports during the lunch break.
Former England skipper Michael Atherton felt losing Stokes at lunch's stroke was a significant setback for the hosts. 'India wanted Stokes on strike and that was a hammer blow for England. Stokes played nicely but he is gone and delight for India."
Hussain also commended Akash, who currently has figures of 4-58 and took 4-88 in the first innings. 'I think he is a highly-skilled bowler – and at you all the time. It's not just the cracks in the pitch (why he has had success). He is a wonderful bowler."
After claiming two wickets late on Day 4, the right-arm fast bowler continued his impressive spell by quickly removing Ollie Pope (24) and Harry Brook (23), tightening India's hold on the match.
Stokes became the third batter to fall on the day as Washington trapped him leg before in the last over before the break.

Ben Stokes calls Edgbaston pitch ‘sub-continent' surface after India defeat, England coach McCullum rues toss decision

After a match that witnessed a record 1692 runs being scored on arguably one of the flattest pitches served out in the country in the 21st century, England captain Ben Stokes said the Edgbaston pitch ended up suiting India more, progressively displaying 'sub-continent' traits before their 336-run defeat on day five in Birmingham on Sunday. Despite putting on a rapid 407 with a run rate over 4.50 in reply to India's first-innings 587 after opting to bowl first, Stokes and Co. were blunted by the Indian batters, led by captain Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old Punjab batter ended up becoming the first batter in Test history to record a 250 and a 150 in the same match, totalling 430 runs, the second-highest match aggregate for a player in history. England's Bazballers were eventually exposed, not just by the sheer weight of runs India amassed – the 1014 runs in two innings being the highest-ever recorded by the side in 591 Tests. The glaring gulf between the pace attacks of both teams meant India had enough quality in their attack to pick all 20 wickets, becoming only the second team in Test history after Australia (in 1938, 1969) to register 1000 runs and pick up all 20 wickets in a match. Led by Akash Deep's 10-wicket match haul and Mohammed Siraj's first-innings six-for, India seamers picked up 17 wickets to England pacer's eight in the match. When quizzed on the Test Match Special, if England wanted to continue playing on such flat-bed surfaces, Stokes countered that the conditions ended up mirroring pitches in India, which suited the visitors. 'To be honest, it's probably ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch as it got deeper and deeper into the game. There was certainly a little bit in it to start off with and I think we exposed that very very well early on,' said Stokes. 🗣 "It ended up being more of a subcontinent pitch." Ben Stokes thinks the Edgbaston pitch didn't really suit his England side. #ENGvIND #BBCCricket — Test Match Special (@bbctms) July 6, 2025 After having India at 211 at five in the first innings, England ended up conceding 376 runs more in the innings as Gill recorded his career-best score of 269 with steady hands from Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42). 'Then just as it sort of got deeper and deeper, it just became a real tough slug for us and obviously with the Indian attack and the conditions that they're used to, they were sort of used to and knew sort of how to expose those conditions just sort of a little bit better than us and that can happen sometimes. But yeah, it's nothing to be too disheartened about. We can take being out-skilled and we've certainly been out-skilled this week,' said Stokes. England head coach Brendon McCullum, meanwhile, rued the team's decision to bowl first. 'I think, as the game unfolded, we probably looked back on that toss and said did we miss an opportunity there and it's probably fair. We didn't expect that the wicket would play quite as it did and hence we probably got it slightly wrong. But we did have them 200 for 5 and we weren't able to capitalise on that position and when you win the toss and bowl you're hoping to, well you're not anticipating the opposition's going to score 580 and then from that point we're behind the game,' McCullum told reporters. India and England will square off in the third Test at Lord's, starting Thursday.

(AP Photo/Scott Heppell) Former India captain Virat Kohli was one of the first to congratulate Shubman Gill and Co. after their thumping 337-run win over England at Edgbaston. The win levelled the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, and the third Test will start on July 10 at Lord's. 'Great victory for India at Edgbaston. 'Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere': Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win Siraj's effort was also praised by another former India captain, Sourav Ganguly. 'What a performance from Shubman Gill and his team… with the bat and now with the ball… Akash Deep and Siraj just brilliant. Indian attack looking far superior to the English attack. While this should be remembered as the Shubman Gill Test match for his incredible 430 runs, the efforts from Siraj in the first innings and Akash Deep in both innings on a surface which didn't have much for the bowlers was an outstanding effort. Well done team,' Sehwag wrote on X. Siraj replied: 'Thank you sir,' with a smiling face. Stokes hints at Jofra Archer's return for Lord's Test against India

Birmingham [UK], July 7 (ANI): After England's heavy 336-run defeat to India, captain Ben Stokes hinted at the possibility of Jofra Archer returning to the Test XI for the second match at Lord's, but stressed that the decision will depend on how players recover ahead of the game. 'Again, it will be a decision that we have to make seeing how everyone pulls up. We've had him here this week to get around the group and build him up with his workloads and everything like that. So everyone's in consideration for the game at Lord's,' said Stokes at the post-match press conference. The 30-year-old speedster recently made his long-awaited return to red-ball cricket after more than four years, representing Sussex in a County Championship match against Durham at Chester-le-Street. He bowled a tidy spell, returning figures of 1/32 from 18 overs, and also contributed 31 runs with the bat, showing signs of form and fitness as the match ended in a draw. Archer last played a Test match in February 2021, and has since battled multiple injuries. While he made a return to England's white-ball setup ahead of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup and has featured in ODIs and T20Is, his red-ball workload has been carefully managed. Archer's pace and aggression could be a valuable asset at Lord's, but Stokes and the management remain cautious. Archer's availability will be closely monitored over the next few days, as England seek the right combination to square the series. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, a 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three sixes. Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and tumbled down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer.
