India Today11-06-2025
Howrah Police on Tuesday detained the mother of Shweta Khan, one of the prime accused in the alleged pornographic racket and torture case that has rocked West Bengal. The case involves serious allegations against Shweta and her son, Arian Khan, who are accused of running a porn racket and confining a woman for six months in Domjur, Howrah.According to sources, two of Sweta's brothers have also been taken in for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. The victim, a 23-year-old resident of North 24 Parganas, is currently battling for her life at the Sagor Dutta Medical College and Hospital. She reportedly sustained multiple injuries, including broken hands, feet, and bite wounds, after allegedly being tortured for refusing to act in pornographic content or work as a bar dancer.advertisement"The accused woman and her son are absconding and a search for them has been launched. We are trying to probe whether they were running any pornography film racket in the veil of running an event management agency," a police official told PTI.
The case took a political turn after photos of Sweta Khan with several senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders surfaced online. Images show her posing with state minister Arup Roy, MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, and former minister Rajib Banerjee. One Facebook profile under the name Sweta Khatoon, now at the centre of the controversy, lists her as 'works at TMC' and features cover photos of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Meta apologises for inaccurate Kannada translation

Social media major Meta recently apologised for inaccurate Kannada translation and claimed to have fixed the issue, after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns over faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on its platforms. Raising concerns over the faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, Siddaramaiah said that it was leading to the distortion of facts and misleading users. "We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. We apologize that this happened," a Meta spokesperson said. Siddaramaiah said social media platforms must act responsibly, especially when dealing with official communication, and cautioned citizens to be aware that translations displayed on these platforms are often inaccurate. "Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication. My media advisor has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction," Siddaramaiah posted on 'X'. "Social media platforms must act responsibly. I caution citizens to be aware that translations shown are often inaccurate. Such negligence by tech giants can harm public understanding and trust," he added. In an email sent to Meta on July 16, the chief minister's media advisor, K V Prabhakar, raised serious concerns on behalf of the CM regarding the automatic translation of Kannada content on Facebook and Instagram. The Karnataka government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the auto-translation feature for Kannada content until translation accuracy is reliably improved. Machine translations are shown to users in various instances on Facebook and Instagram, including public biographical info and specific pieces of content. In the case of Kannada auto-translation, Meta's AI machine translation model provided a machine translation error which caused inaccurate Kannada translations in Facebook-- which the company claims to have been fixed now.

Rae Bareli cops arrest 4 members of Raj-based cyber gang impersonating bureaucrats on social media

Lucknow: Rae Bareli police, with support from the Cyber Cell and Special Operations Group (SOG), on Sunday busted an interstate cyber gang that specialised in creating fake social media profiles of senior police and administrative officers to extort money from gullible victims. Four gang members were arrested during a coordinated raid in Rajasthan's Alwar district, while two mobile phones used for the fraudulent activities were seized. Rae Bareli SP Yashveer Singh revealed that the gang recently created a fake Facebook account using his name and photo to deceive his acquaintances. "This gang was targeting people connected to senior officers. By carefully scanning the social media profiles of officers, they identified friends, relatives, and acquaintances, and then sent messages demanding money in emergency situations," he said. Rae Bareli additional SP Sanjeev Sinha said that the gang had been operating out of Alwar for a considerable time and has a track record of similar cyber frauds across states. Prior to targeting Yashveer Singh, they also created a fake account of many IGs of Jammu & Kashmir Police and extorted money. Police suspect the gang to have impersonated multiple officials, including bureaucrats and senior officers, to dupe unsuspecting contacts. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo The four arrested men have been identified as Lalit Chandra, a resident of Nagal Tappa Nana Bagad Tiraha; Sahil Khan, of Pali village; Jalsingh and Sahil Lal of Kiriria village—all located in Alwar district, Rajasthan. This operation comes after Rae Bareli police arrested three other members of the same gang on July 3. The earlier arrests took place near GIC College in Rae Bareli, where Narveer Singh (from Ballabhgarh in Haryana's Faridabad), Rashmuddin (from Bagaur Ismailpur, Alwar), and Basir Ahmed (from Naugawan in Rajasthan's Alwar) were caught red-handed while attempting to withdraw money linked to the fake SP's account. Their interrogation provided critical leads, which eventually led police teams to Alwar. Police are now interrogating the arrested men to identify other members of this well-spread cyber network. "We are mapping their operations and financial transactions. Their modus operandi shows that they operate in a highly organised manner, using fake IDs of officers to exploit public trust," the SP added. The arrests highlight a growing trend where cybercriminals exploit the credibility of high-ranking officials on social media. Authorities have urged citizens to verify any financial requests, even if they appear to come from known officers, before making any payments.
