Suzuki Australia wants more diverse models, including sportier Swift

Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota says he wants to fill the Swift Sport -shaped hole in the brand's local lineup, as well as bolster the wider range with different body styles and powertrains.
The Swift Sport, based on the previous-generation hatch, has been out of production for Australia since revised safety regulations regarding autonomous emergency braking (AEB) came into effect earlier this year.
There has been no word from Suzuki globally on on a new Swift Sport based on the new-generation mild-hybrid hatch, and Suzuki's local division says it's in the dark as well.
'We haven't been told anything at all. We get surprised from time to time by Suzuki Japan,' Mr Pachota told CarExpert.

'They're very confidential when it comes to their development, and we only get certain visions based on, for example, evolutions of product sometimes, other bits and pieces. Swift Sport is possibly a hot topic globally, I just await any news on it.'
The Swift Sport is a simple vehicle in principle. Take an otherwise affordable, economical hatch, make it look a little tougher, fit a more potent engine, and keep prices attainable while you're at it.
This was certainly the case for the outgoing third-generation Swift Sport. It featured a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 103kW of power and 230Nm of torque, the option of a six-speed manual or automatic, and started at $29,990 before on-roads.
This was only $200 pricier than the 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder found in the Swift GLX Turbo, which had just 82kW and 160Nm. At the bottom of the range was a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder with 66kW and 120Nm, priced from $23,490 before on-roads.

The current Swift Hybrid, meanwhile, features a 12V mild-hybrid system and a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine producing 61kW and 112Nm.
It's not clear what could power a potential new Swift Sport, but Suzuki still offers small-displacement four-cylinder turbo engines available in other Suzukis such as the S-Cross, which can still be had with the warm hatch's 103kW/130Nm Boosterjet turbo-four.
'Just like you, we're sitting here waiting and hoping that there might be something there. But if there isn't, to be fair, the current product line is selling quite well, so I'm happy with it,' Mr Pachota told CarExpert.
Suzuki's Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, did reveal the hotter-looking Swift Champions model earlier this year, but that wasn't much more than a concept.
The Swift is Suzuki's second-best-selling model in Australia with 1935 delivered in the first half of 2025, while the Jimny is well ahead with 4365.

Mr Pachota said he's keen for more than just a new Swift Sport though, telling CarExpert he'd be open to anything and everything from commercial vehicles and utes to different types of electric vehicle (EV).
'I have an appetite for anything else outside of my product portfolio. So anything that I can get to add to the Australian product lineup, both hands are up,' he said.
'Different segments, different opportunities, you know. And we're the small car specialists, so we kind of play in the same kind of area. But if there's growth as an opportunity, I'm all for it.
'The market globally is evolving all the time, so we're gonna evolve with it.'

As seen in spy photos and teasers, it appears to have a more rakish silhouette than the combustion-powered GLC, but is much more athletic-looking than the blobby EQE SUV. Mercedes-Benz is also ditching its EQ nameplates, which is why this new mid-size electric SUV is called the GLC with EQ Technology instead of the EQC. Inside, the electric GLC will feature an 'all-new, seamless' MBUX Hyperscreen that will see the vehicle's screens under one layer of glass. It's also the first model in a 'completely new family of vehicles' featuring a 'superbrain' that will power every new Mercedes-Benz. The electric GLC will debut the brand's new dedicated electric vehicle (EV) architecture, and rides a wheelbase 129mm longer than the combustion-powered GLC – so just over three metres. It'll be offered in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations with system outputs of up to 500kW. Batteries range from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit that's likely to deliver a WLTP-rated range of just over 500km, to a 94.5kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery that boosts WLTP range to more than 800km. This battery's highly efficient silicon carbide anodes and the 800V electrical architecture also allow charge rates of up to 320kW, which mean it can be topped up to give 400km more range in as little as 15 minutes. A prototype we drove in Sweden earlier this year was reasonably close to what is likely to be the top-spec, non-AMG GLC 4Matic with EQ Technology. Its dual-motor powertrain had a system output of 360kW, a two-speed transmission, the 94.5kWh battery, air suspension, and rear-wheel steering.

Newly installed Honda Australia CEO Jay Joseph told CarExpert his nearly three decades of working for the brand in North America mean he's been able to exploit connections to the US supply chain. While none of these are confirmed – and the current-generation Ridgeline all but ruled out – the Australian office is now looking beyond its typical Japanese and Thai-sourced vehicles courtesy of Mr Joseph's background. "I've been in contact with my former colleagues there quite a bit and it's something we're considering – we need to take a look at that. We need to look everywhere we can for products that are relevant to this market," he said."A lot of the tastes in the US are quite comparable and a good fit. "Australia is an interesting market because I would say it's more of a western market in terms of preferences and behaviors even though it's located here in Asia-Oceania." "And I think that suits it well to some products from other parts that maybe have been considered, but maybe I've got a chance to lobby for them a little bit stronger than in the past." Honda's manufacturing footprint in the US includes four main vehicle factories, with its Marysville, Ohio, plant being the oldest. It's been producing vehicles since 1982. It also has design and engineering centres as part of 18 major facilities across its US operations. "We can do full vehicle development in the United States comparable with GM (General Motors) and Ford – and I would say we're more capable than anybody else there," Mr Joseph told CarExpert. "This is all part of Honda becoming a global company and leveraging its management resources on a more global basis." The Ridgeline, Passport and Pilot have always been built exclusively in left-hand drive, but Honda Australia did source one vehicle from North America in the past. That was the Canadian-built MDX, a rebadged large SUV from Honda's premium Acura division, sold here from 2003 to 2006.
