Blue Jackets sign restricted free agent Dmitri Voronkov to 2-year contract

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Dmitri Voronkov, who has scored 18-plus goals in each of his first two NHL seasons and is regarded as one of the league's emerging power forwards, signed a two-year, $8.35 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. The deal pulls Voronkov off the restricted free-agent market, eliminating the risk of an offer sheet. Voronkov, who had arbitration rights, needed to decide before 5 p.m. ET Saturday if he wanted to request arbitration, but his new contract eliminates that decision. Advertisement His contract has a salary cap hit of $4.175 million. He earned $925,000 with his previous contract. 'We are very pleased to reach this agreement with Dmitri as he is an important part of our young core,' Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said. 'He has size, strength and excellent hands, and he has a chance to be a very special player. We look forward to his continued growth and development as a Blue Jacket.' Voronkov, 24, set career highs last season with 23 goals, 24 assists and 47 points in 73 games. He also had 55 penalty minutes and a plus-17 rating. In coach Dean Evason's first season behind the Blue Jackets' bench, Voronkov, a 6-feet-5, 227-pound left winger, found a home on the top line with center Sean Monahan and right winger Kirill Marchenko, becoming one of the top lines in the NHL. Columbus' only remaining restricted free agent is Mikael Pyyhtiä. In other Blue Jackets news Saturday, the Colorado Avalanche announced that they hired Columbus minor-league assistant coach Mark Letestu as head coach of the AHL's Colorado Eagles, the Avs' top minor-league affiliate. Letestu had been an assistant coach for the AHL's Cleveland Monsters for the past four seasons.

Alex Bowman is looking for a 2nd straight Cup Series win in Chicago

CHICAGO — Alex Bowman thinks he is moving in the right direction. With the NASCAR Cup Series back in Chicago on Sunday, it's good timing for the Hendrick Motorsports driver. Bowman raced to a sorely needed victory in downtown Chicago a year ago, stopping an 80-race drought and securing a spot in the playoffs. He is still looking for his first win this season, but he finished third last weekend at Atlanta.

Phillies star Nick Castellanos yells at fan for berating teammate after loss: 'Crossed multiple lines'

Philadelphia Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos had some words with fans after the team's 9-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Friday at Citizens Bank Park. As the camera panned to the Phillies' dugout after the final out, Castellanos was shown standing on the top step, gesturing towards the crowd and yelling towards a fan. Jace Kaleikau, a producer for the Phillies, who witnessed the interaction, said Castellanos was sticking up for second baseman Bryson Stott, who made the last out of the game. Kaleikau said the fan "crossed multiple lines," while yelling towards Stott in a post to X. Stott entered the game in the eighth inning to replace Edmundo Sosa and grounded out to second base. With a man on first and two outs in the ninth inning, Stott came up to bat again and popped out to Reds third baseman Noelvi Marte to end the game. Stott has struggled this season, as the second baseman has a .236 batting average with five home runs and 35 RBI. Castellanos is one of the clubhouse leaders for the Phillies, as evidenced by the right fielder sticking up for the 27-year-old Stott. Castellanos has been a key bat in their lineup, as the right fielder has a .278 batting average with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. However, while Castellanos is a good hitter, he is a subpar defender in right field. The Phillies started out fast, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Phillies' 3-0 lead quickly vanished as the Reds scored six unanswered runs, highlighted by a five-run third inning. Despite the loss, the Phillies have a half-game lead over the New York Mets in the NL East. The Phillies (51-37) will look to rebound against the Reds (46-42) when they play the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
