Jinkx Monsoon Calls Out J.K. Rowling's Name
This is Broadway star and RuPaul's Drag Race alum Jinkx Monsoon, and she had a few cleverly-placed words for the author best known for creating the Harry Potter series.
In a clip for her upcoming interview with Ziwe, Jinkx answered a cheeky question about whether or not J.K. Rowling would "make a good Roxy Hart in Chicago."
In addition to winning Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race and Season 7 of Drag Race All Stars, Jinkx has starred on Broadway as Ruth in Pirates! A Penzance Musical, Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and "Mama" Morton in Chicago. She is set to take over as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary! in August 2025.
Jinkx feigned confusion about J.K.'s identity, seemingly addressing a larger conversation surrounding the British author's anti-trans politics.
"Who is Jake? Who is he? Jake Hay Rowling?" Jinkx asked.
When Ziwe pointed out that J.K. was a "she", Jinkx immediately said, "Oh, dear. That is not a feminine name in the slightest."
Jinkx then suggested that J.K. intentionally misled readers about her gender. "I know that oftentimes, female authors use initials so that people assume it's a male writer," Jinkx said, before adding, "I have to presume that J.K. Rowling was unsatisfied with the way that the world saw her, and then she transitioned herself into a new personality so that the world would perceive her the way she wanted to be perceived."
Ziwe and Jinkx locked eyes for a moment, and she responded, "Gagging."
In a July 2017 Teen Vogue interview, J.K., whose real name is Joanne, revealed that her publisher for Harry Potter suggested she "disguise" the fact she was a woman so the book "might appeal" to all genders. The author said it didn't last long because once she got a lot of publicity and an advance from America, she was "outed as a woman." Notably, J.K. also writes The Cormoran Strike series under the pen name Robert Galbraith.
Over the last few years, J.K. has made headlines for her anti-Trans comments and active campaigning against laws in the UK that would allow transgender people to change their legal gender. Earlier this year, when the UK Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the legal definition of a woman only applied to those whose biological sex is female, J.K. shared a photo with the caption, "I love it when a plan comes together."

The full interview airs on July 31 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

‘Weapons' Star June Diane Raphael Explains Pantless Premiere Look: ‘It's a Little C—y and a Little Horror and a Little Scary'
June Diane Raphael turned it out Thursday night at the world premiere of her new movie 'Weapons,' wearing a a pantless black tuxedo look reminiscent of Roxie Hart, the murderess ex-con turned showgirl in the Broadway musical 'Chicago.' 'When you're a part of such a big genre film and such a giant piece of performance art, it's time to leave your pants at home,' Raphael deadpanned. 'I've always said that, you know what I mean? It's time to lose a major piece of clothing. (The 'performance art' was a faux classroom on the red carpet inside the United Theater on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles that featured several child actors pretending to be unconscious at their desks and a couple of boys covered in creepy clown makeup.) More from Variety Why Seth Rogen Is Becoming the New Nicole Kidman Across TV and Film: 'I've Always Been Proud of Having a Lot of Output' Taron Egerton Shaved His Head and Bulked Up to Play an Ex-Con in 'She Rides Shotgun,' but 'There Was No Method Nonsense' Jessica Chastain Enrolls at Harvard Kennedy School to Get Masters Degree in Public Administration Raphael continued, 'It's horror chic. It's horror glam and it's a little cunty and a little horror and a little scary and a little spooky.' An original horror written and directed by Zach Cregger, 'Weapons' revolves around a town's reaction to the disappearance of an entire classroom students who ran from their homes at 2:17 a.m. and vanished into the night, triggering a wave of frantic finger-pointing and accusations ensnaring the children's teacher (Julia Garner.) Raphael, best known for her turn on 'Grace and Frankie' with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, admitted she wasn't exactly a horror fan: 'I am such a scaredy cat. I'm scared right now.' The cast of the Warner Bros film also includes Josh Brolin, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Alden Ehrenreich Benedict Wong and Amy Madigan. As previously reported by Variety, 'Weapons' cost $38 million in a package that included $10 million total for Cregger to write, direct and produce after a frenetic bidding war. S.F. musical about Luigi Mangione looks to expand internationally after extending run
San Francisco's buzzy new musical about Luigi Mangione has extended its run once more, with its creators looking to expand the production beyond the Bay Area. ' Luigi: The Musical,' inspired by the social media discourse surrounding the 27-year-old suspect in the murder case of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has added an Aug. 6 show at the Independent after selling out all previous performances. The satirical show follows Mangione as he encounters his prison mates — Sean 'Diddy' Combs, who was recently convicted on prostitution-related charges, and fallen FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried — at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, in a production staged in the style of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical 'Chicago.' Tickets for the August show, currently the only upcoming performance, are available now. Even before its debut at Taylor Street Theatre on June 13, the musical attracted national attention — 'If only the show itself could justify the hype,' wrote Chronicle theater critic Lily Janiak in her opening night review of the production. Nonetheless, 'Luigi: The Musical' went on to sell out its initial run at the 49-seat venue through June 28. Due to high demand, four additional performances were staged in July at the Independent, a 500-capacity venue on Divisadero Street. Now its creators are considering runs in Los Angeles, New York, and Edinburgh, Scotland. 'It's so fun and cathartic for us to perform the show, and audiences are really loving it,' Caleb Zeringue, an executive producer, writer and actor in the show, told the Chronicle. 'We are hearing from the audiences that the show helps them process our current society. … We want to give more people the chance to see it.' Despite describing the show as 'terrible,' Janiak acknowledged that it drew 'younger-than-usual theatergoers' and serves as proof that people 'still crave theater that helps us make sense of current events and envision fresh political possibilities.'
