I saw John Legend perform at Glasgow's Hydro

Glasgow Times27-05-2025
US singer John Legend brought soul to the Hydro on Tuesday night by performing an intimate set to a smaller crowd than the arena is used to.
A trio of backing singers signalled his entrance by teasing vocals before the Ohio-born star appeared dressed in a satin suit.
He then asked: 'What's up Glasgow?' - before demanding, 'Get on your feet, c'mon,' to perform Get Lifted.

With a little swagger, he then launched into the tracks that featured on his 2004 debut Get Lifted including the Snoop Dogg featured I Can Change and Alright.

The night was about celebrating the two decades since that album's release, and vocally Legend has never sounded better.
This was particularly evident when he took it back to church for a performance of Take My Hand, Precious Lord. His voice was just beautiful.

He then laughed: 'I am having so much fun going back 20 years with you all.'
This moment marked the start of him reminiscing about his career.
He revealed he played piano when he was just starting out on Lauren Hill's Everything is Everything before demonstrating the beat he created with his voice for Kanye's Jesus Walks - which featured on the rapper's debut The College Dropout - and the sound was quite something.
He also boasted his CV included writing credits on Estelle's American Boy while he sang background vocals on Alicia Keys' You Don't Know My Name.

This section of the show lifted the mood instantly as the atmosphere up until that point had been rather lacklustre.
A crowd that small in the Hydro just gets lost, and it showed.

Ordinary People however, impressed with the audience modestly singing along while the Meghan Trainor duet Like I'm Gonna Lose You showcased the prowess in his voice.
Surprising a fan, he got her on stage for a dance, and she seized the moment making the audience laugh.
Finishing things off, he showed off his own dance moves again on Green Light which featured Outkast's Andre 3000 while All of Me was the moment of the night.
He signed off: 'It's been so beautiful hanging out with you.'

Child star from original Willy Wonka film reveals how much he still earns from movie 54 YEARS later

Peter Ostrum was just 14-years-old when he appeared on screen as the beloved Charlie Bucket in 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Starring alongside Gene Wilder as the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket, the former actor once described his pay check as 'paltry' and later turned his back on acting to pursue a career as a vet. However 54 years on from the film's release, he has revealed he still receives a small income from his role. Speaking at Snowtown Film Festival in 2018, Peter said he makes around $8 to $9 in royalties every three months from the film being shown on TV. Based on Roald Dahl 's 1964 book, the movie told the story of five schoolchildren who won the chance to tour the magical factory belonging to candy man Wonka after finding golden tickets hidden inside chocolate bars. The film suffered 'lukewarm reviews' and 'died a quiet death' Peter recalled, earning $4million from its release and disappeared. Starring alongside Gene Wilder (pictured) as the lucky winner of the Golden Ticket, the former actor once described his pay check as 'paltry' and later turned his back on acting However, thanks to a series of TV broadcasts it began gaining popularity in the 80s with the child star admitting he had no idea just how popular it had become. Peter told the Daily Mirror: 'Back then when the film came out there was no red carpet premiere. 'I was in my hometown in Ohio and they had an opening there and I was the only one there. There was a little bit of fanfare but not much and the film died a quiet death. 'It had lukewarm reviews and people forgot about it. It wasn't until video 10 years later that it resurfaced and it took on a life of its own.' Peter traded in the acting scene to become a respected veterinarian, after getting a doctorate from prestigious American university Cornell and using his earnings from the film to buy a horse. He turned down a potentially lucrative three-film deal with producer David L. Wolper following his success in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory to concentrate on his studies before specialising in treating cattle and horses. 'Everybody could be so lucky to have an experience like this and then to go in a completely different direction,' he told the Today show in 2015. Discussing his brief acting career with the Daily Express in 2014, the Ohio -born father-of-two recalled: 'Looking back, my pay check was paltry, but it was during filming that I really became interested in medicine.' Peter continued: 'People tell me they watched Willy Wonka so many times growing up that they wore out their VHS copy. We had no idea we were making a classic, which even coined a new phrase: "I've found the golden ticket." 'I will always cherish my memories of making the movie, but I feel I won the golden ticket by becoming a vet.' In an interview with the American Veterinary Medical Association, Peter recalled seeing a vet at work and thinking: 'This person really enjoyed what he did for a living.' He explained: 'My father was a lawyer, and I really didn't have a clue what he did all day. But I knew exactly what the veterinarian did. 'Someone making a living from something he enjoyed so much really sparked my interest. I thought if I didn't pursue that, I'd always kick myself.'

Bob Dylan leaves gig-goers in stitches as they spot band arriving to gig in unique way

A mode of transport used by Bob Dylan and his band to get to the stage for a show in New York has delighted audience members, with many left in stitches after they spotted the vehicle An odd arrival for Bob Dylan's band at a recent gig has left audience members in stitches. The veteran performer is continuing on the Outlaw Music Festival tour in the United States, and his recent appearance in New York has startled some attendees. The Duluth-born songwriter spent his formative years in New York, and returned for a performance yesterday (August 1). ‌ Whether it was Dylan, who is set to perform in the UK later this year, or long-serving bandmate and bass guitarist Tony Garnier was up for debate in a thread posted to X, where fans were delighted by the abnormal transport choice. The original post to X reads: "BOB IN A BOAT." ‌ ‌ A zoomed-in video was shared to the social media platform, with a man in black attire and wearing a hat seen boarding the vessel, which headed straight for the stage. Dylan's performance in Wantagh, New York, was hosted near the coast and it seems travelling to and from the stage required a change from the usual tour bus. Instead, a boat brought the artists to the stage, and people believe they spotted Dylan, or one of his bandmates, on the way to the show. Fans were delighted to see the clip, with one writing: "Brings me so much joy to see Bob in a boat. Thank you." ‌ Another added: "Yes, I saw that! Yes, he was with Tony headed to the stage at Jones Beach. Great show!" A third shared: "Oh my God, I hope he's having fun." Others were left wondering if it was Dylan's long-time collaborator, Tony Garnier, headed to the stage. One fan wrote: "Could be Tony." ‌ Another added: "Guy in the hat is definitely Tony Garnier, I saw another video of them getting off the boat and bob is in a white hoodie." Those who attended the show were full of praise for Dylan's performance, with the veteran songwriter performing a handful of covers and hits from his discography. One attendee took to the r/BobDylan Reddit page and confirmed he and another audience member took turns with a pair of binoculars so they could see the stage. They wrote: "My microscopic view of Dylan tonight at Jones Beach. Thank you to the person beside me for sharing binoculars so I could see him. "What a night. I was absolutely floored by how amazing he sounds live, and by how ethereal his presence is. Also thoroughly enjoyed Lucinda, Wilco and Willie Nelson, won't forget this day anytime soon. "The energy of the crowd and performances were just top notch, I think it helped that the weather was really nice and cool today. And yeah, I was a bit sceptical about how Dylan might sound but he blew me away."
