IND vs ENG Test: 'Monday is a workday...' – Nasser Hussain and Dinesh Karthik lambast match officials

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 03: Players of India go off for bad light during day four of the Fifth Test Match between England and India at The Kia Oval on August 03, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) Former England captain Nasser Hussain and ex-India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik have lambasted match officials for declaring stumps early on Day 4 of the fifth Test at The Oval. England, seeking to wrap up a 3-1 win, were 339 for 6 when play was abandoned late on Sunday's fourth day of the fifth and final Test, needing a further 35 runs to reach a target of 374. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! India, who had appeared down and out at one stage, require four wickets to end the thrilling series level at 2-2. England were faltering at 106 for 3 following the loss of stand-in captain Ollie Pope, but the Yorkshire pair of Brook (111) and Root (105) turned the tide with a fourth-wicket stand of 195. However, Brook's exit sparked a mini-collapse, with the home side losing three wickets for 36 runs, including Root's dismissal. When bad light halted play, England were wobbling, with Jamie Smith two not out and Jamie Overton yet to get off the mark. Joe Root press conference : On Mohammed Siraj fake anger, why he punched his bat, update on Woakes 'Most importantly for viewers and fans who paid good money — remember, Monday is a workday — and this sort of series deserves a finale in front of a big crowd at an iconic cricket ground like The Oval,' Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports. 'That would have been some finale on Sunday. You may have just knocked off 35, or you may have seen Chris Woakes walk downstairs in a sling. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Rare, Refined, and Ready Soon – Monte South is the Answer Monte South A Joint Venture between Adani Realty and Marathon Realty Learn More Undo I'm just wondering if they could have done anything — they had like 42–43 minutes to play with within the laws and the playing regulations. 'If the groundsman had said, 'No, we can't get the covers off in that time,' the umpires would have had to call stumps. But I'm just wondering... you do have the option of the extra half hour, don't you? If you feel you can get a result at 7:30, if there were 10 runs to win, the umpires would have given the team the extra half hour. I was just wondering if you could give the extra half hour at 6:42 (11:12 PM IST) and say to the teams: 'We're willing to push that back half an hour. Are you okay with it?' If one of the teams — if India said, 'Our bowlers are exhausted, give them a night's sleep,' then you say, absolutely fine. Or if England said, 'We've had a mad hour there, we want to come back tomorrow,' that's fine. But I'm just wondering if you could have had a bit of common sense in there. It's a shame,' he said. Dinesh Karthik also echoed Hussain's views. Poll Should match officials have extended play for an extra half hour on Day 4? Yes, it would have allowed for a thrilling finale No, the rules should be strictly followed It depends on the situation Not sure 'On a day like this, especially in a Test series of this magnitude, it would be nice to have 20,000 people at the ground cheering — whichever team won. I mean, it was either going to be England 3-1, which it looked like for a majority of the day, and then suddenly after tea, India came back with some renewed excellence with the ball,' said Karthik. 'There was a little bit of rain, and I agree the rules are the rules, but I kind of like what Nasser said — that half-hour extension you get. Even if it meant starting again at 6:45, it could have gone for 11 or 12 more overs, it could have gone either way. The crowd would have gotten to see a result. And it's a nice feeling to know that both teams have gone so hard — you give them the option. If they don't want to use it, fair enough. Everybody comes back tomorrow for whatever it's worth. But today, I think a little bit more common sense would have been to ask. I'm not saying it should have happened, but to ask — I think that's the fair thing to do,' added Karthik. Ind vs Eng 5th Test: Ashwin slams Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir for lack of game awareness & tactical acumen

Former India spinner R Ashwin slammed the duo of captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir for "lack of game awareness" in India's series against England. Ashwin felt that the team management had not used spinners effectively in the entire series, adding that they lacked tactical acumen. This is the main reason why England are ahead in this series and India are behind. We haven't been the sharpest,' Ashwin said on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Surgeon: Suffering From Pain After Age 50? 'I feel Shubman Gill will get much better as a captain. He will learn. But sometimes, if you feel that you can play spin really well, you might not bring spinners into the attack. And when you miss the right moment to introduce spinners in these conditions, they become a defensive option,' he added. Live Events Bad light and subsequent rain forced early stumps Day 4 of the final Test at The Oval on Sunday. The match on Day 5 is set of a thrilling finish with England need just 35 more runs to win, while India require four wickets for a miraculous victory. England looked all set to complete the chase of 374 on Day 4, thanks to Joe Root hitting his 39th Test century. However, it was Harry Brook who struck a stunning 111 off 98 balls, his tenth century in the longer format and made the most of a crucial reprieve on 19. The duo from Yorkshire added 195 runs for the fourth wicket, giving England a chance to complete their second-highest run chase of all time, and the highest ever at The Oval. 'When Harry Brook started taking it on, after 20 runs, you could have brought on the spinner to choke the run flow. From the other end, a pacer could have bowled. With all this in mind, Washington Sundar could have been introduced earlier into the attack,' Ashwin said. 'Making these mistakes creates a huge gap. We don't know whether the message is going from outside to the middle. We don't know what's being discussed in the dressing room. But in today's day and age, these mistakes can definitely be avoided,' he added.

WATCH: Bad blood! Noah Lyles shoved by Kenny Bednarek after his win in 200 meters at US nationals

Kenny Bednarek pushes Noah Lyles after the men's 200-meter finals during the U.S. Championships athletics meet in Eugene, Ore.,Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Ashley Landis) A heated confrontation erupted between sprinters Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek at the U.S. track championships in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday, following the 200-meter final. Lyles won the race in 19.63 seconds, but the victory was overshadowed by a post-race shoving and shouting match between the competitors, setting up an anticipated rematch at the world championships in Tokyo on September 19. The incident unfolded when Lyles passed Bednarek for the win and stared him down, prompting Bednarek to respond with a two-handed shove in the back after crossing the finish line. The confrontation continued with heated words exchanged between the athletes. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "Like I've said before, Noah's going be Noah. If he wants to stare me down, that's fine," Bednarek said. The tension spilled into the NBC winner's interview, where both athletes continued their verbal exchange. "I tell ya, if you've got a problem, I expect a call," Bednarek said, to which Lyles responded: "You know what, you're right. You're right. Let's talk after this." "The summary is, don't do that to me. I don't do any of that stuff. It's not good character right there. That's pretty much it. At the end of the day, he won the race. I've got to give him props. He was the better man today," Bednarek stated after the race. When asked about the incident, Lyles simply stated: "On coach's orders, no comment." The rivalry between Lyles and Bednarek has emerged as a significant storyline in track and field, with Bednarek having won silver and beaten Lyles in their last two Olympic matchups. "Just some personal stuff we've got to handle," Bednarek mentioned, referring to underlying issues between the two athletes. "If they ain't gonna beat me now, they ain't gonna beat me ever," Lyles declared. Poll Who do you think will win the rematch at the world championships? Lyles, who has an automatic spot at worlds as defending champion, only ran one heat of the 100. In other competition results, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden secured victories in both the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 21.84 seconds and the 100 meters. Olympic champion Gabby Thomas qualified for the world team with a third-place finish. Dalilah Muhammad, 35, dominated the women's 400 hurdles, which was notably missing Olympic champion and world-record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who chose to focus on the open 400. The men's 800 meters provided an exciting finish, with 2019 world champion Donavan Brazier defeating 16-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus and Bryce Hoppel. In the 5,000 meters, Shelby Houlihan, who recently returned to track after serving a four-year doping ban, edged out Elise Cranny for the title. Houlihan had previously tested positive after consuming what she claimed was a tainted burrito containing a performance-enhancing drug. "We'll go fresh and we'll see what happens," Bednarek said regarding the upcoming world championships rematch. "Because I'm very confident I can beat him. That's all I can say."
