Priscilla Cheung chasing city record and Hong Kong glory as Games debut nears

A year of preparation has paid off for high jumper Priscilla Cheung Ching-lam, who can look forward to representing Hong Kong in two big events over the next few months.
With a World University Games debut less than a month away, the two-time Hong Kong champion should also make the cut for the city's National Games squad after leaping a personal best of 1.81 metres in Singapore in April.
Cheung actually graduated from Polytechnic University last October, but a rule allows for students to compete the following year, hence her presence in Germany.
'I didn't make it in Chengdu in 2023, so this is my first and last World University Games,' Cheung, who majored in hotel management, said.
Cheung has attempted to raise the bar several times since her personal best, which is just below the 1.88m city record, set by Cecilia Yeung Man-wai in Taipei in 2017.

The 25-year-old took three goes at clearing 1.82m at the Hong Kong Athletics Series this weekend, and although she could not make it, a successful attempt at 1.76m was enough for her to win at Wan Chai Sports Ground.

Hong Kong fallen giants Lee Man and Kitchee swing axe to release 25 players

Deposed Hong Kong champions Lee Man have announced a 12-player clear-out following the club's barren 2024-25 campaign. Advertisement Henri Anier, the local league's joint-top scorer during Lee Man's invincible 2023-24 season, is among the headline departures. Defender Ryan Tafazolli has left following the expiry of his loan from Wycombe Wanderers, while Brazilian forwards Paulinho Simionato and Samuel Rosa have not had their contracts renewed. Timothy Chow, the 19-year-old Hong Kong defender, is moving to university in America. Szeto Man-chun, the assistant coach, has also left Lee Man. The club appointed Chu Siu-kei as permanent boss following the end of the season, after the 45-year-old stepped in as interim following Matt Holland's axing in March. With Ryoya Tachibana the only foreigner still on Lee Man's books, and a number of the remaining key players the wrong side of 30, Chu has a huge rebuilding job on his hands. Advertisement However, Lee Man are expected to sign prolific striker Noah Baffoe, who left Eastern this summer after scoring 65 goals in two seasons with the club. Midfielder Barak Braunshtain, who is in the process of applying for a Hong Kong passport, is set to arrive from BC Rangers.

Turning stress into fuel: Hong Kong cyclist sets bold Olympic medal target

After a chastening debut Olympics showed Ceci Lee Sze-wing the gap between her and the world's best cyclists, the rejuvenated and increasingly self-assured Hongkonger has targeted Games glory in 2028 and beyond. Lee limped home 20th in her strongest event, the omnium, in the Paris velodrome last year, then acknowledged she had been overwhelmed by the occasion. Reading online criticism as she waited for doping tests, Lee felt 'really depressed'. 'I knew I didn't deserve anything; it was a really hard moment,' Lee, who now avoids social media commentary, said. 'Before Paris, I thought the gap between me and the world-class riders was quite small. Afterwards, I realised it was really big. 'I saw others who were faster than me and still working so hard, so I have no reason to not do the same.'
