Suspected Nipah case reported in Kerala's Palakkad district
Preliminary tests suggest a possible Nipah virus infection, and samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for confirmation. The final test results are expected on Friday, said sources at the DMO.
'The woman initially sought treatment for high fever and cold at a local clinic on June 26. She was later admitted to a nearby nursing home for two days, before being shifted to the private hospital in Perinthalmanna on June 30, after her condition worsened,' said a source.
Though the exact source of the infection remains unconfirmed, health officials have noted a significant presence of bats in the vicinity of the woman's home, raising suspicions of a zoonotic transmission - a common concern with Nipah outbreaks.
'She is the mother of three and lives with her in-laws. Her husband, who works in the UAE, returned home on Thursday,' said Muhammed Saleem K P, president of Thachanattukara grama panchayat. 'The health department has started contact tracing and is monitoring all individuals who may have interacted with her,' he added.
Authorities have intensified surveillance in the area.

Nipah restrictions in 20 wards in Malappuram, 6 in Palakkad
Health authorities in the State have intensified the vigil against the spread of the deadly Nipah virus following the detection of one case each in Malappuram and Palakkad districts. Palakkad District Collector G. Priyanka on Friday (July 4) declared six wards in Thachanattukara and Karimpuzha grama panchayats as containment zones after a 38-year-old woman from Thachanattukara tested positive for Nipah. She is battling for life at a private hospital at Perinthalmanna. Malappuram Collector V.R. Vinod declared 20 wards in Makkaraparamba, Koottilangadi, Kuruva and Mankada panchayats as containment zones. An adolescent girl from Chettiyarangadi near Makkaraparamba, who died in Kozhikode on July 1, tested positive for Nipah. Residents within a 3-km radius of the infected persons' houses have been advised to avoid gatherings. They have to wear N-95 masks when venturing out. People in Malappuram and Palakkad districts have been advised to avoid crowding as well as visiting patients in hospitals. Educational institutions in containment areas, including anganwadis, tuition centres and madrasas, will remain closed. Shops can function from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Health Minister Veena George, after reviewing the situation at a high-level meeting of health officials on Friday evening, said that 345 people were on the contact list of the Nipah-affected persons. She warned people against disturbing or driving away bats from their colonies. In Malappuram, 211 people are on the contact list. In Palakkad, 91 people are on the contact list and in Kozhikode, 43 people are on the list. Those on the contact list should remain in quarantine. All the 43 persons in Kozhikode are healthcare workers. Health workers in Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts are working overtime to prepare the route map of the Nipah affected persons and to trace their contacts. Both the persons reportedly developed symptoms of Nipah on June 25 and 26. Health staff will collect three weeks' data from Thachanattukara (in Palakkad district) and Chettiyarangadi near Mankada (in Malappuram district) and will investigate if anyone there had died due to encephalitis or pneumonia in June. The district administration has taken over two floors (sixth and eighth) of Government Medical College, Palakkad, as part of its preparedness to fight the Nipah spread. People have been asked to exercise vigil against Nipah, whose symptoms include fever with severe headache, fatigue, sore throat, muscle pain, vomiting, breathing difficulties, paralysis, blurred vision, mental disorientation, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Caregivers and those in close contact with people showing such symptoms should use N95 masks and gloves as the virus spreads through bodily fluids. People have been warned against consuming fruit and vegetables partly eaten by birds or animals. Ms. Priyanka cautioned the public against disturbing or chasing away bats, warning that stressed bats may produce more bodily fluids, potentially increasing the risk of virus transmission.

345 people on Nipah contact list in Kerala
A total of 345 people have been put on the Nipah contact list in the State, a statement issued by Health Minister Veena George after a high-level meeting here on Friday. This includes 211 people in Malappuram, 91 in Palakkad, and 43 in Kozhikode. All those on the contact list at Kozhikode are health-care workers Two persons from Palakkad and Malappuram suspected of having Nipah after preliminary examination of samples at Malappuram and Kozhikode Medical Colleges had tested positive. Following this, the sample from Palakkad sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune was confirmed as positive. However, the Health department had initiated all control measures in Palakkad even before the official conformation came. The route map of the Nipah-positive person in Palakkad has now been released and Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode districts have been put on alert. Meanwhile, experts cautioned people that roosting bats should not be disturbed by bursting crackers or by any other means. The department directed the affected districts to strengthen contact tracing by focussing around hospitals and other health-care institutions and to ensure that none are missed when preparing the contact lists. Both patients in Malappuram and Palakkad began showing symptoms from June 25 and 26. Health workers will start collecting local field information from the three weeks preceding this period. Efforts will be to find if there have been any pneumonia or encephalitis deaths in the localities. The department has established State and district control rooms in connection with the Nipah outbreaks. In all three districts, 26 committees each have been set up. The help of the police is also being sought to prepare the contact list. The district Collectors have declared containment zones in Palakkad and Malappuram. People here should necessarily wear masks in public places. Those who participated in the high-level meeting convened by the Health Minister included the Additional Chief Secretary (Health), NHM State Mission Director, Director of Health Services, Director of Medical Education, Additional Directors, District Collectors, District Medical Officers, police officials, and other department officials.

Nipah control room opened in Kozhikode
District Medical Officer (DMO) R. Rajaram has informed that a special control room has been set up in Kozhikode district to address public anxiety regarding the Nipah virus. The control room will function from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be reached at 0495-2373903. The DMO has urged the public not to panic, stating that the patient who recently died of suspected Nipah had no contact with the public, and hence, the chances of the disease spreading are minimal. However, 43 health workers are under observation.
