Sabalenka expecting ‘big chance' to win on Madrid clay

Daily Tribune24-04-2025
World number one Aryna Sabalenka believes she will have 'big chances' to perform well on clay this season, should she recapture the level she showed during last year's Madrid Open final against Iga Swiatek.
The Belarusian squandered three match points in a heartbreaking defeat by Swiatek in the Spanish capital 12 months ago, in what was a high-quality clash that earned WTA Match of the Year honours at the end of the season.
Targeting a third Madrid Open crown this fortnight at the Caja Magica, Sabalenka reflects fondly on her final against Swiatek, despite coming agonisingly close to victory before falling just short.
'That match was a blockbuster, and I really enjoyed playing, it was very intense, very long. If I can play like that in every match on clay, I think I have big chances to perform well on the clay court season this year,' Sabalenka said o n Wednesday.
'That was amazing match, even though I lost it. 'Nothing I can be upset with, to be honest. I did my best there, and she just outplayed me.'
Sabalenka arrives in Madrid on the back of a runner-up showing in Stuttgart, where she fell in the final to Jelena Ostapenko.
The 26 - year- old, who won the 2024 US and Australian Opens, is still waiting for her first title on clay since her 2023 Madrid triumph.
The top seed will open her campaign against Anna Blinkova or Panna Udvardy in round two.
This season is featuring live electronic line calling on clay for the first time on the WTA and ATP tours –- a decision that has been met with mixed reaction.

Modric at AC Milan to ‘stay competitive and in Europe' at 40

AFP | Milan Croatia captain Luka Modric said yesterday he had penned a one-year contract with AC Milan to 'stay competitive and in Europe'. 'I'm happy to be here and I look forward to a new adventure,' the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner told AC Milan's TV channel after joining from Real Madrid. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined the Spanish giants from Tottenham i n 2012, going on to win six Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. 'I wanted to stay in Europe, to continue playing competitive football. I had some other offers but when Milan showed up for me it was clear from the first moment,' he said. Milan finished a disappointing eighth in Serie A last season and will not play in European competition. But Modric insisted Milan remain 'one of the biggest clubs in Europe'. 'Milan cannot be satisfied with average and needs to have the biggest goals possible, to win titles, to compete with the best teams in the world, that's why I am here.' Modric signed a one-year contract, with an option for an additional season with the seven-time Champions League and 19-time Serie A winners. 'I'm never satisfied, I always want more,' he warned . 'When you've experienced that feeling (of winning), you want to feel it even more. I still have hunger, desire, still wanting more.' To explain his longevity, Modric said 'the most important thing is the love for the game, for football'.

Real Madrid confirm Vazquez departure

Real Madrid defender Lucas Vazquez will leave the club, the Spanish giants confirmed yesterday. After his deal expired at the end of the season Los Blancos had agreed a short-term contract extension for the Spaniard to keep him for the Club World Cup, which they competed in this summer in the United States. 'Vazquez exemplarily represents the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most beloved players by our fans,' said Madrid president Florentino Perez in a statement. '(He) symbolises the hard work, perseverance, humility, and winning spirit essential to succeed in this shirt.' Originally a winger, the 34-year-old won 23 trophies at the club including five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles, largely as a squad player. 'I leave Real Madrid but Real Madrid will never leave me,' said Vazquez in a goodbye video. The Spaniard came through the Madrid youth system and spent his whole career at the club, with the exception of a loan to Espanyol in the 2014- 15 season, playing 402 times across all competitions for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid's Bellingham set to miss 12 weeks after shoulder surgery

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is expected to miss up to 12 weeks recovering from a shoulder operation after the Spanish giants said yesterday he had successfully undergone surgery. 'Our player Jude Bellingham has undergone successful surgery for a recurrent left shoulder dislocation,' said Real Madrid in a statement. 'Bellingham will now begin a period of rehabilitation prior to his return to recovery work.' While Madrid did not specify the expected length of his recovery time, Spanish media have reported it will take around 12 weeks for him to return to action. Bellingham has been struggling with shoulder discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. The England midfielder held off on the operation until after Madrid's participation in the Club World Cup this summer, with Xabi Alonso's side reaching the semi-finals. Bellingham is set to miss the La Liga visit to face rivals Atletico Madrid in late September, as well as the club's first two Champions League matches. The 22-year-old midfielder should be back in action by the time Madrid host Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season in late October.
