‘Harsh But Necessary': Shiv Sena MLA Defends Assaulting Canteen Staff, Says It Sparked Govt Action

News1810-07-2025
Gaikwad, however, maintained that his reaction—though aggressive—brought long-overdue attention to the issue.
Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad on Thursday defended his controversial act of physically assaulting a canteen manager at the Akashwani MLA hostel in Mumbai, claiming it was a 'harsh" response but it was 'necessary" and that finally forced the government to act on years of complaints about substandard food. The incident, caught on camera and widely circulated, shows the Buldhana legislator slapping and punching a hostel canteen employee after being served what he described as 'almost poisonous" food. The video has triggered sharp criticism from across the political spectrum, including from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Gaikwad, however, maintained that his reaction—though aggressive—brought long-overdue attention to the issue. Speaking to reporters, he claimed that over 200 complaints had been filed over the last five years about the quality of food served at the canteen, with little or no response from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA). 'Even FDA Minister Narhari Zirwal told me that despite asking officials for action, he never got a report for two to three months," said the MLA from Eknath Shinde's faction of Shiv Sena.
The fallout from the assault was swift: the FDA on Wednesday evening suspended the licence of the canteen operator after inspections revealed food safety violations. Gaikwad alleged that the canteen, which serves up to 10,000 people daily, was endangering lives. 'The man I hit was the manager who has now been suspended. He was playing with lives. What I did forced the system to act," he said, justifying his outburst.
Gaikwad further cited personal health concerns, stating that he has suffered from chronic stomach issues for over two decades and avoids eating outside. 'If I eat stale food, I suffer for 15 days. What I was served could have caused severe health issues," he said. 'Yes, my actions were harsh, but they helped bring change. This will save lives of lakhs of Marathi people," he added.
While opposition leaders demanded action against Gaikwad, he remained unfazed. 'It's a non-cognisable offence. I've already met the Assembly Speaker and will speak to the Chief Minister and Deputy CM. I'm ready to face any punishment," he said.
Reactions within the ruling coalition were muted. Amol Mitkari, MLC from ally NCP, urged people to understand the emotional context of the incident. 'Nobody is justifying the assault, but he didn't cause a law and order issue. His anger stemmed from frustration over poor quality food after a long day," said Mitkari.
On the other hand, opposition MLA Rohit Pawar of NCP (SP) doubted whether any real accountability would follow. 'Gaikwad is close to a senior leader in his party and part of the ruling alliance. I doubt any strong action will be taken," Pawar said.
The incident has reignited debate over food safety in government facilities and raised questions about accountability mechanisms in public institutions.

5 effective tips for Indian women to reduce hair fall immediately

Hair fall is quickly becoming a major concern among Indian women that is made worse by pollution, hard water, stress, hormonal imbalances and heat-styling. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Stuti Khare Shukla, MD Dermatologist, Founder of Elements of Aesthetics and Founder of FDA-approved hair growth booster, shared, 'Latter hair shedding is abnormal and it generally requires urgent attention if it is sudden or excessive (50 – 100 daily). Having worked as a dermatologist and helped thousands to fight against hair loss, I am a believer in early intervention with either natural or science based means and can be effective.' A top dermatologist shares the secret to stopping hair loss in Indian women before it is too late.(Image by Freepik) Here's what she suggests you do: 1. Switch to sulphate-free and paraben-free shampoos Use organic products: Opt for sulphate and paraben free products on your hair. Many shampoos in the market contain sodium lauryl sulphate which can make the hair very dry. Be very gentle while massaging the scalp while shampooing since your hair is the weakest when wet.(Unsplash) There are plenty of commercial shampoos that contain harsh chemicals such as sulphates (SLS) and parabens that remove natural oils from your scalp, giving the hair a dry and brittle feel. Select soothing dermatologically tested shampoos that clean but do not strip your scalp barrier. Search for recipes that contain ingredients such as biotin, keratin, or caffeine that help in strengthening and volumising hairs. 2. Nourish from within: Focus on nutrition Nutritional guide for healthy hair: Foods to boost growth and prevent shedding. (Freepik) Lack of essential nutrients is perhaps the most under looked hair fall cause. Indian women including vegetarians may have deficiencies of Vitamin B12, iron and protein. Introduce leafy greens, dairy, lentils, eggs and nuts to your diet in your meals. You can also think about the supplements under doctor's guidance to even out deficiencies and promote hair regrowth. Do blood tests like thyroid profile, vitamin B12, prolactin, dihydrotestosterone, and iron profile on a regular basis. If you experience delayed periods, make sure to get checked for PCOS. Also, include good supplements in your diet, such as a combination of hair nutraceuticals, multivitamins and IRID supplements. 3. Avoid heat styling and restrain harsh hair treatments Frequent heat styling and tight hairstyles can weaken the hair shaft and damage follicles, leading to breakage and traction alopecia. Use heat protectants, loosen your hairstyles, and give your scalp breaks. (Freepik) Hair strands can be seriously destroyed by constant bouts of employing straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers. Likewise, a chemical treatment such as rebonding and colouring weakens the hair shaft. Give your hair consistent time off from styling habits and ensure the use of a heat product when it is necessary. Go natural with your hairs and avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the roots. 4. Manage stress and prioritise sleep A regular sleep pattern contributes to the formation of melatonin required for hair growth. We should fix our sleep pattern and get good 7-8 hours of sleep every day.(Unsplash) With high pressure, the body releases Cortisol, a hormone that causes disruption in the hair growth cycle. Simple things such as deep breathing, yoga, journaling, or moving around with a brisk walk can go a long way in taking care of your mental state and indeed your hair health. Enough sleep (7 to 8 hours) is equally necessary for the scalp and hormonal balance. 5. Stay hydrated for healthy hair roots Drinking enough water can help you detoxify, boost digestion, improve the quality of your skin and hair and help you feel well-balanced. (Shutterstock) Even though many do not appreciate the role of hydration in preventing hair fall, water facilitates circulations of nutrients to the hair follicles. When the body is dehydrated, it factors out other organs and holds water for the vital organs, leaving very little hydration for the scalp. At least 8 – 10 glasses of water consumed each day is helpful for healthy roots of the hair. Man Finds Worm In Food Served At Rameshwaram Cafe's Bengaluru Airport Outlet

Last Updated: A passenger at Bengaluru airport found a worm in his breakfast at a Rameshwaram Cafe outlet. The staff initially tried to cover it up but later apologised to him. A passenger at the Bengaluru airport found a worm in the food served to him at the outlet of a prominent cafe, NDTV reported. The incident happened on Thursday morning, when the passenger had visited an outlet of the popular Rameshwaram Cafe at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. According to the report, the passenger had ordered Pongal for breakfast at the airport. As he confronted the staff over the worm in his food and raised a complaint, they initially tried to cover up the incident. However, the staff members apologised to him as he began recording a video of the food served to him, the report claimed. He was later issued a full refund of Rs 300 for the item he had ordered. Bengaluru's Rameshwaram Cafe formed headlines in March last year, when an IED explosion at one of its outlets in the city injured many people. In December last year, A passenger at Jaipur International Airport found a cockroach in his bread pakora, highlighting food safety concerns. He alleged the staff were not listening to his complaints. Later, a purported video of Gaikwad allegedly slapping a canteen worker went viral on social media. In response to the complaints of the MLA, the state's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) briefly suspended the license of Ajanta Caterers, the manager of the Akashwani canteen. The FDA officials also took food samples from the Akashvani MLA canteen. Even as the controversy flared, Gaikwad refused to apologise and said that he had 'no regrets" for his actions, saying that the food in the canteen was akin to poison. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Is thimerosal in vaccines a hidden danger? The debate over mercury and autism risks

Picture this: a little compound humming away inside some vaccine vials since the 1930s, quietly stopping germs from crashing the vaccine party. That's thimerosal—an organomercury compound containing around 49% mercury by weight, used as a preservative in multi-dose vaccine vials to keep bacteria and fungi at bay. When vaccine manufacturers pierce the vial multiple times, contamination risk spikes—thimerosal prevents that by killing germs before they can cause trouble. Now let's talk mercury. Unlike methylmercury—which is found in fish and can build up over time—ethylmercury (the type in thimerosal) is processed and expelled quickly by your body. Government agencies and researchers say that at the tiny doses used, it's not harmful—and the only side effects observed are minor, like redness or swelling at the jab site. Reactive allergic responses are rare but possible, and often mild—even though patch testing has identified some sensitivities in 16–18% of cases, without major clinical concern Does it heighten autism risk? Back in 1999, as fears around autism and mercury exposure swirled, the CDC, FDA, National Institutes of Health, and pediatric associations recommended removing thimerosal from childhood vaccines as a precaution—not because there was proof it was dangerous. By about 2001, most vaccines for children under six in the U.S. no longer contained it; today, vaccines like MMR, chickenpox, polio, and pneumococcal never included it at all. "There is a robust body of peer-reviewed, scientific studies conducted in the United States and countries around the world that support the safety of thimerosal-containing vaccines. The scientific evidence collected over the past 20+ years does not show any evidence of harm, including serious neurodevelopmental disorders, from use of thimerosal in vaccines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read More Undo Specifically, the Institute of Medicine (now known as the National Academy of Medicine), and others have concluded that the evidence favors rejection of a link between thimerosal and autism. Scientific studies of the risk of other serious neurodevelopmental disorders have failed to support a causal link with thimerosal," a US CDC report says. Currently, thimerosal isn't in most routine vaccines, but it still pops up in some multi-dose flu vaccine vials, especially those used in clinics or public vaccination drives where single-dose packaging isn't practical. For flu shots in the U.S., about 90–96% are thimerosal-free, but the multi-dose ones may still have up to ~25 micrograms per dose—while trace amounts might show up during manufacturing in rare vials. Recently, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—now heading vaccine policy at HHS—appointed a new advisory panel that has started pushing to remove thimerosal entirely from flu vaccines. That move has alarmed major medical groups, warning it could reduce vaccine access in under-resourced areas and fuel fear over misunderstood risks. "Although all vaccines routinely recommended for children 6 years of age and younger in the U.S. are available in formulations that do not contain thimerosal, thimerosal has a long record of safe and effective use in preventing bacterial and fungal contamination of vaccines, with no ill effects established other than hypersensitivity and minor local reactions at the site of injection," the CDC report adds.
