Cairo Gears Up for 5th Edition of Cairo Francophone Film Festival This May

Ali abo dashish- Ahmed Emam
The Egyptian capital is preparing to host the 5th edition of the Cairo Francophone Film Festival (CFFF), scheduled to take place from May 26 to 30, 2025. Under the leadership of renowned film critic Dr. Yasser Mohab, the festival is expected to welcome a diverse array of filmmakers, critics, and cinema enthusiasts from Egypt and across the Francophone world.
This year's edition will feature a vibrant lineup of films representing the artistic voices and cultural diversity of French-speaking countries from all five continents. The festival promises to be a hub of cinematic excellence, showcasing both established and emerging talents from the international Francophone community.
Marking a strategic shift, the 2025 edition introduces a new festival date, moving from its traditional November or December slot to May. The decision, according to Dr. Mohab, follows a thorough review of the global festival calendar and is aimed at enhancing the festival's reach and artistic impact.
> 'The change wasn't made on a whim,' said Dr. Mohab. 'It came after a detailed study of the international and Francophone festival seasons. May offers better opportunities to premiere a wider range of films and to attract a broader selection of talent, including stars and members of Francophone communities residing in Egypt. This enriches the festival's competitive spirit and delivers a more diverse and engaging experience for our audience.'
Dr. Mohab emphasized that the new date is part of a broader vision to position the festival as a leading platform for serious Francophone cinematic and cultural dialogue. 'We aim to support both creators and audiences of Francophone cinema, and we believe this change will open new horizons for collaboration with film institutions and festivals around the world,' he added.
The fifth edition will also witness expanded programming, including a wider variety of screenings, workshops, critical discussions, and public events targeting both general audiences and young creatives with an interest in Francophone culture and film.
Launched in 2021, the Cairo Francophone Film Festival was established as a platform to celebrate cinematic creativity from the 88 member countries and governments of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). Since its inception, it has successfully hosted the regional and international premieres of hundreds of acclaimed films, earning praise for its rich programming and its role in promoting cross-cultural dialogue between Egypt and the Francophone world.

Culture minister launches national plan to revive film industry, modernise cinematic assets

Minister of Culture Ahmed Fouad Henno has announced the launch of a comprehensive national plan to revive the Egyptian film industry. The plan focuses on developing state-owned cinematic assets into modern production hubs equipped with the latest technologies, while also preserving and digitally restoring Egypt's rich cinematic heritage to present it to new generations in high-quality formats that reflect its historical and artistic value. The Minister affirmed that this initiative comes in response to directives from the political leadership to invest in idle cultural assets and enhance their contribution to the creative economy. It also aims to provide a professional production environment that will help restore Egypt's leading position in cinema. Henno explained that the strategy rests on three main pillars: upgrading the infrastructure of studios and cinemas, reactivating idle assets to maximise their cultural and economic value, and establishing a professional national production entity to offer integrated services for creators and investors. As part of this effort, the Holding Company for Cinematic Productions, together with its subsidiary the Cinematic Asset Management Company, has set out an ambitious plan to modernise Cinema City, Studio Nahhas, and Studio Ahram. These facilities will be outfitted with advanced post-production technologies, including editing systems, colour grading, sound mixing, digital archiving, and upgraded fire safety and air conditioning systems. The plan also covers the renovation of sound stages and cinemas such as Miami, Diana, and Normandy. The company has already reopened several previously closed cinemas and has launched renovation work on Miami and Normandy cinemas for the first time in over 25 years. It has also settled disputes with distribution companies and upgraded audio-visual systems. Additionally, the Holding Company is working to establish a national production company to provide professional services in filming, editing, sound mixing, and colour grading. The aim is to support film and television production in Egypt and deliver competitive production models across the Arab world and the wider region. In parallel with modernisation efforts, the Holding Company—working alongside the Heritage Restoration Center for Audio-Visual Media at Media Production City—has digitally remastered several Egyptian cinema classics in high-quality 4K resolution. These titles include The Second Wife, The Sin, The Quail and Autumn, Sunset and Sunrise, The Man Who Lost His Shadow, Umm Hashim's Lamp, The Road, Cairo 30, A Taste of Fear, My Wife and the Dog, Between the Two Palaces, Palace of Desire, My Wife Is a General Manager, The Beggar, The Impossible, People and the Nile, A Crime in the Quiet District, and The Mirage. Ezz El-Din Ghoneim, CEO of the Holding Company, explained that this restoration initiative will help showcase these cinematic treasures on digital platforms and at international festivals, reinforcing Egypt's cultural leadership and its status as a prominent soft power in the region and beyond. Ghoneim added that the company has launched an official website to manage cinematic assets, alongside a dedicated YouTube channel to stream state-owned films. It has also signed a contract with a content protection company to prevent piracy and maximise digital revenues. Looking ahead, the next phase will involve equipping the Cinema City film lab with state-of-the-art restoration equipment, in collaboration with the Egyptian Armed Forces Engineering Authority and under the management of the Cinematic Asset Management Company. Given the scale of the project, restoration work will be split between the Heritage Restoration Center at Media Production City and the company's own lab to ensure efficiency and timely delivery. Furthermore, the Holding Company is considering organising a dedicated festival for restored films, featuring public screenings of rare works in their newly digitised formats at specially equipped theatres, complemented by discussions and seminars with critics, writers, and artists connected to these films. The goal is to create an interactive cultural experience that deepens public appreciation for these classics and highlights their enduring place in Egyptian cinematic history.

Stephen King's "Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" Movie in Works

Yara Sameh Stephen King's novel "The Long Walk" is getting the big screen treatment. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to King's 1999 novel "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", setting JT Mollner, the filmmaker behind the well-regarded thriller "Strange Darling", to pen and helm the adaptation. The project marks a new collaboration between King and Mollner, who wrote the script for "The Long Walk", which was directed by Francis Lawrence and opens September 12. Roy Lee, the producer of "Long Walk" and "Strange Darling", will reteam with Mollner for "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". Also producing will be Christine Romero, Ryan Silbert and Andrew Childs. Nathan Kahane, who is transitioning from his post as Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president to independent producer, will also join the project in a producorial capacity. King's psychological horror novel centers on the harrowing survival story of a nine-year-old girl named Trisha as she struggles to stay alive after getting lost in the woods alone. With only her Walkman radio playing baseball games to keep her company, the girl's love of pitcher "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" begins to manifest in hallucinations that may save her life. 'JT is a filmmaker we believe has a bright future,' said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman. 'Throughout his work, he creates characters, and especially young characters, that are so compelling, heartbreaking, and emotional that they pop off the screen. And of course, that's what Stephen King does on the page as well. The story of survival and perseverance in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is timeless. We've loved this tale for a long time, and JT is the perfect choice to adapt and direct this King fan favorite.' Meredith Wieck will oversee the project for Lionsgate alongside Pavan Kalidindi. Phil Strina negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio. Lee has, over the years, amassed an enviable body of work adapting King's work, including "It" and "It: Chapter Two", as well as "Doctor Sleep", and "Salem's Lot". "Long Walk," which will have a panel in Hall H on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, adapts King's 1979 horror novel and stars a list of next generation Hollywood talent. Mollner previously wrote and directed the indie psychological thriller "Strange Darling", which was released in 2024 and scored a critically acclaimed 96 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film received the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films' best thriller award in 2025, as well as the STIGES Film Festival Grand People's Choice Award. In addition, Mollner was honored with the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival best director award for the movie. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
