For the 2nd straight year, Hurricanes left to lament falling in huge series hole in NHL playoff exit
This time, it ended their season in another Eastern Conference final — the stage proving to be a roadblock in their multiyear Stanley Cup push.
The Hurricanes fell 5-3 to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday night in Game 5, sending the Panthers back to the sport's final stage for the third straight year while ending Carolina's latest lengthy playoff grind short of the ultimate goal.
And it ended in a similar fashion to the previous year: with Carolina losing the first three games of a series, spending multiple games trying to dig out of that massive hole and then losing a two-goal lead at home in the game that ultimately ended their season.
'I think essentially we lost in the first few games,' Carolina captain Jordan Staal said. 'You can't start a series like that and expect a better outcome.'
A year ago, it was an 0-3 series deficit to the Presidents' Trophy-winning New York Rangers in the second round. The Hurricanes regrouped to win two elimination games and carried a 3-1 lead into the third period of a Game 6 at home, only to see the Rangers surge back behind Chris Kreider's hat trick in the final 20 minutes in a 5-3 victory.
This time, it was an 0-3 series deficit to the the reigning Stanley Cup champion, a tested and deep team unafraid to play and surpass Carolina's aggressive-forechecking approach. And it ended with a matching final score.
'We knew it was going to be a big task to try to beat them,' said Carolina's Sebastian Aho, who had two first-period goals Wednesday that put the Hurricanes ahead. 'We truly believe we have what it takes, but obviously we fell short yet again."
By the final horn, Carolina's lamentations went back to losing the first two games at home, the second being a 5-0 blowout in which the Panthers were shockingly dominant and the Hurricanes' normally rowdy fans were left to frustratedly chant 'Shoot the puck! Shoot the puck!'
'Those first two games you'd probably want back, but it's too little, too late,' said Seth Jarvis, who had a tying goal midway through the third period before Florida made its go-ahead move on Carter Verhaeghe's score. 'And that's kind of the result of it.'
By Game 3, Carolina had seen a 1-1 game entering the third mushroom into a 6-2 loss for their 15th straight loss in a conference final going back to sweeps in 2009, 2019 and the 2023 one against these Panthers. The Hurricanes regrouped to win Game 4 on the road and avert another sweep, but they faced a long climb to accomplish the improbable.
Carolina jumped to a 2-0 lead with Aho twice putting Panthers giveaways in the neutral zone into the net behind Sergei Bobrovsky. But the Panthers flurry of three goals on consecutive second-period shots — two coming in a 30-second span — erased that deficit and silenced a roaring crowd giddy by Carolina's start.
While the Hurricanes responded with Seth Jarvis' tying goal midway through the third, the dynamic of the game had completely changed after a flurry coach Rod Brind'Amour called 'a backbreaker.'
'You could just feel us — it's just natural, the building, everything, it kind of sucked a little bit of life out of us,' he said.
Carolina's five-week playoff push had included five-game series wins against the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals, the latter being this year's top seed in the Eastern Conference. Yet the Hurricanes went from going 5-0 at home in those two series to losing all three home games against the Panthers.
Carolina has won at least one postseason series in its current run of seven straight playoff appearances, though three have now ended in the Eastern final.
'We've had slow starts in the series, when it gets to the top four teams, they're great teams, and having a slow start is never great,' Staal said.

That is Chuba Hubbard, the lead back for the Carolina Panthers. We know that run game generally was really, really good. Uh, right, he went over 1000 yards for the first time in his career. Um, he was just, he was crushing it last season. It was great. Uh, Chuba Hubbard, I think he's a good, he's a really, really good player just. So smart, reads things out well. They added new players in the backfield that maybe over the course of the season, like Rico Dado gets more work, maybe Trevor ETN, their 4th round pick, gets involved a little bit. But, you know, Dave Canals talked about this with Chuba Hubbard. Like he was the guy that he felt really comfortable giving a ton of volume to and that was the case last year. I think it's probably going to be the case at least to start this season. And talk about the schedule in the 1st 4 weeks. Jacksonville, Arizona, Atlanta, New England, like these are 4 teams that I don't think, uh, the Cardinals. I certain people are higher on the Cardinals' defense. Um, I think they could take a step forward. They certainly added some some personnel this year that could help out Jonathan Gannon over there, but they're still a team because of how funky they play with some of their looks, some of their fronts versus the guys in coverage, like, they will get gashed on the ground. I still think if I'm putting If I'm kind of weighing one or the other, like, where will Arizona take a big step as a defense, I think they're probably gonna take a bigger step as a pass defense than a run defense. So these are 4 teams that I think you can run on and Hubbard should be getting a lot of work to start the season. But I think you have to be worried about DeAndre Swift. Like there are so many things right now pointing down for his, his outlook this year. I think it was surprising that they didn't. Make a meaningful addition in the offseason. I think they wanted to. I think they wanted to get uh Travon Henderson or one of the rookies potentially, and they got sniped in the draft kind of round after round, and they just didn't come away with anybody until they got Kamenonga much, much later. And what are we seeing over the weekend in Their scrimmage, Kamenonga getting some reps with the first team. Ben Johnson talking about how he actually thinks that Manonga is a guy that they have faith in, that they could use this fall. So I think we're going to see someone else involved in this backfield. We're seeing DJ Moore involved in this backfield, and the coaching staff has talked about how they want to use him a bunch of different ways. He's shown in the past that he can do that. He can fill that role, take some carries out of the backfield. I think that's very, very interesting for him. I don't think that's great for Swift. And then you look at the season and how it starts for them here, like just very, very difficult matchups here. They gotta have, they gotta go against the, the Vikings and the Lions, like we talked about earlier. But in the run game, bottom 5 teams in terms of rushing yards and fantasy points permitted to running backs last year. So those are tough matchups. Close

Surprise! There's been quite a bit of parity in the race for baseball's best record
The 2025 regular season was supposed to be about Dodger dominance. Instead, the race for baseball's best record has turned into a free for all. If there were any concerns about a Los Angeles behemoth running roughshod over the sport, that hasn't materialized so far. In fact, eight different teams have spent the past three months passing baseball's best record around like a hot potato. The race for the top record in the major leagues is in many ways symbolic. Home field advantage in the postseason isn't quite the prize it is in the NFL or NBA, and there's no Presidents' Trophy given for regular-season excellence like in the NHL. But the number of teams that have taken a turn at the top is noteworthy. Since May 1, the Dodgers, Tigers, Padres, Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Brewers and Blue Jays all have held the best record at some point. Five of those teams have held the top spot in an even more recent span — since July 1. Since the American League and National League began expanding significantly in 1961, this is only the fifth time at least eight teams have held (or tied for) the best record in baseball through games of May 1 or later, according to Sportrader. One of those seasons was 2020, when the whole 60-game schedule was after that date. The others were 1963 (eight teams), 1982 (eight) and 2021 (nine). The largest lead any team has been able to open on the rest of the majors — all season — is when Detroit was three games up for a few days shortly before the All-Star break. Who are they? LA's story For the first few weeks of the season, it looked like the Dodgers might indeed be on their way to well over 100 wins. The defending champs — who had added pitchers Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki in the offseason — won their first eight games, but since then Los Angeles has looked mortal. In early June, the Dodgers had 14 pitchers on the injured list, and although they're in first place in their division, their current winning percentage of .580 would be their worst since 2018 if that's where they finish the season. Line of the week Pittsburgh's Liover Peguero hit three home runs in an 8-5 loss to Colorado. It was a tough defeat to swallow for the Pirates, who actually gave ace Paul Skenes some run support, only for him to allow four runs in five-plus innings. Comeback of the week On the topic of tough losses to swallow, the Pirates also fell to the Rockies — after scoring nine runs in the top of the first. Pittsburgh led 16-10 before allowing two in the eighth and five in the bottom of the ninth. Brenton Doyle hit a two-run homer to win it 17-16 for Colorado, which had a win probability of 0.5% in the eighth according to Baseball Savant. The Rockies are the only team this season to win after falling nine runs behind, and they continue to make progress in their effort to avoid matching or breaking the modern record for losses set by the Chicago White Sox last year. Colorado went 3-3 this week and is now 30-81 on the season. The White Sox went 41-121 Trivia answer Unsurprisingly, the seven are among the majors' younger franchises — the Rays, Diamondbacks, Marlins, Rockies, Blue Jays, Padres and Rangers. Of the teams that have finished with the best record in baseball, the one with the longest current drought is the Twins, who last did so in 1965.

Jon Gruden impressed with Georgia football, delivers fiery speech
Jon Gruden, the Super Bowl-winning former head coach and current college football and NFL analyst, delivered a powerful and inspiring speech to the Georgia Bulldogs team, motivating them for their upcoming season. Gruden also visited a Georgia Bulldogs practice while he was in town. He subsequently delivered a passionate and inspiring speech to the team. His intensity and passion is similar to that of Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, who has frequently emphasized the phrase "passion, fire, and energy" throughout the offseason. The 2025 Georgia team is on the younger side with over 50% of them being in their first or second year in the program. "I feel it every day (passion, fire and energy), because if you don't have it, it's hard to be successful," said Smart ahead of fall camp. "You can't keep up. Our staff has it. Our staff has great juice. We've had a chance to reenergize." Georgia's coaching staff has energy, but many of the younger Bulldogs are still adjusting to the pace of practice at Georgia. However, Kirby Smart likes the accountability his team has shown so far. "They do push and challenge each other," Smart said. "That's what I've enjoyed about this team so far, they're not afraid to hold each other accountable and get after each other. They know that they're stronger together than they are apart." The saying will be crucial for the Bulldogs as they face what's shaping up to be one of college football's most demanding schedules in 2025. Georgia is set to host powerhouses like Alabama and Texas, along with Ole Miss, and other formidable opponents in Athens. Last season ended with a sour note and everyone wants this season to be better in all phases of the game. Jon Gruden's speech at UGA "What I saw today was phenomenal," said Gruden. "The tempo, the attitude, I mean, the moving from drill to drill. You guys showcased your effort, but you've got to string days together."
