State drafts new bill to curb rising child marriages despite existing laws
Despite awareness campaigns and annual action plans, state data shows a worrying upward trend in child marriages. According to the Department of Women and Child Development, Karnataka recorded 2,165 child marriages between 2021 and 2025.
Notably, 1,416 of these cases occurred in just the past two years—since the current Congress government assumed office. In 2024–25 alone, 700 child marriages were reported, alongside 3,049 complaints. Authorities claim they successfully prevented 2,349 planned marriages. Shivamogga district topped the list with 79 confirmed cases, followed by Belagavi (78), Chitradurga (74), Bagalkote and Mysuru (60 each), and Mandya (57).Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed serious concern during a review meeting with Deputy Commissioners and Zilla Panchayat CEOs on May 31.
He reportedly reprimanded officials for failing to prevent the practice and instructed the Law Department to draft a bill targeting not only the act of child marriage but also its preparation and engagement arrangements. The bill has received initial approval from the Women and Child Development Minister and is now under legislative scrutiny before being tabled.
The state's move comes as a critical intervention to address what officials describe as a persistent and deeply rooted social evil.

The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents' Association has officially withdrawn its indefinite strike following the Karnataka government's decision to clear pending dues related to the Anna Bhagya scheme. The association had cited non-payment of bills for over six months as the primary reason for the protest. However, on Tuesday, the State government issued an order releasing ₹244.1 crore towards incidental expenses including transportation charges for the period between February and May 2025. Federation president G.R. Shanmugappa welcomed the move and announced the withdrawal of the strike, stating that the government had responded positively to their demands. 'The government has promised us that all pending dues will be settled within 48 hours. Accordingly, our members have decided to resume transport services with immediate effect,' said Mr. Shanmugappa. He further added that the State has also promised to refund the earnest money deposit (EMD) of ₹26 crore, paid by lorry owners during the tendering process, within four days. Earlier, the federation had expressed frustration over the non-payment for foodgrain transportation services provided under the Anna Bhagya programme since February. Anna Bhagya, one of the Congress government's flagship welfare initiatives, offers free rice to eligible families and is a critical part of its five key guarantee schemes announced after coming to power in 2023.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio was the victim of impersonation via artificial intelligence (AI). Per reporting from The Washington Post, Marco Rubio's impersonator used AI text and voice generation tools to imitate the Secretary of State's speaking and writing style in order to contact multiple foreign ministers, a Congress representative, and a state Governor. Most of this impersonation occurred via the encrypted messaging app, Signal. Signal has already been a cause of embarrassment for Donald Trump's administration due to it being the source of prior security breaches, such as a leaked group chat discussing a bombing campaign in Yemen, in which both Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth were present.
