Barcelona fury as referee accused of being ‘Madridista' after chaotic Inter defeat
Marciniak left Barça furious with his decisions during the epic Champions League semi-final defeat at Inter Milan in which they lost 7-6 on aggregate thanks to Davide Frattesi's extra-time winner at San Siro.
Hansi Flick's players were incensed at Marciniak turning down a penalty appeal when Inter defender Francesco Acerbi appeared to handle in the area.
They were also aggrieved at the Polish referee awarding Inter a penalty after a pitch-side review for Pau Cubarsí's tackle on Lautaro Martínez .

Marciniak subsequently overturned a penalty appeal when Henrikh Mkhitaryan tripped Lamine Yamal and the foul continued in the area.

Barça midfielder Pedri led the calls for a probe into Marciniak, claiming: 'It's not the first time that this has happened to us with this referee, Uefa should look at it. There are things that I don't understand and they are complicated to explain.
'All 50-50s are for them. In the penalty to Lamine [Yamal], which was then a foul, he did not give Mkhitaryan a yellow card, which would have been the second.'
Marciniak also received a complaint from Inter after it appeared Iñigo Martínez spat in the direction of Acerbi after the penalty that gave Inter a 2-0 lead. The 44-year-old official did not take further action but the incident could be looked at by Uefa. Martínez, meanwhile, took aim at the referees for his decisions against Barça.
'Everyone has seen today that the decisions fell on the same side, but I don't want this to be talked about,' said Martínez. 'In the end he [the referee] had to make decisions and he made them that way. It's a shame.'
Catalan media outlets questioned Marciniak's appointment as referee for the second leg of the semi-final ahead of the San Siro classic, with Sport suggesting he had a 'favourable history' with rivals Madrid.
The newspaper also posted footage of Marciniak's dressing room for the Champions League semi-final two years ago when a wash bag with Real Madrid's bag was clearly seen in the changing area next to where he was speaking.

The daily highlighted Marciniak disallowing Julián Alvarez's 'double-touch' penalty for Atletico Madrid against Real earlier in the competition.

He also ruled out a Bayern Munich goal against Real last season and chalked off a Chelsea strike in 2022 against the Spanish giants.
Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo said: 'Flick's team overcame Inter's initial 2-0 and the scandalous refereeing of the 'Madridista', who deprived Barça of a penalty for hands and whistled a very rigorous one against.'
Barcelona manager Flick added: 'Every decision that was 50-50 went [Inter's] way. I am disappointed, but not with my team.
'I don't like talking about the referee... I've told him what I think, but I'm not going to say it here what I've said...'

Man Utd transfer news: Benjamin Sesko boost as Bruno Fernandes makes demand
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes wants to see more signings before the transfer window slams shut and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is their top target Manchester United are looking to bounce back this season after their worst ever Premier League finish. United finished 15th last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. They have already strengthened their squad with additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, while Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan and Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released. Plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected before the transfer window slams shut, with Ruben Amorim keen to ship out the likes of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. Sesko boost Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko after it emerged that the striker's RB Leipzig team-mate Lois Openda will not be making the move to Sunderland. United and Newcastle are both interested in signing Sesko, who netted 21 goals in 45 games across all competitions last season. Fellow Leipzig striker Openda had been heavily linked with Sunderland and it is unlikely they would have let two forwards leave in the same window. However, Sky Sports are now reporting that Openda will not be joining Sunderland and that Leipzig are likely to sell Sesko instead. Fernandes' transfer demand Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has said the club need to add "more quality" in the transfer market this summer. "It's improving, but it's not where we want it to be," Fernandes said after United drew 2-2 with Everton in pre-season. "It's a game of football, there's always passion there. Whatever happens, happens. There was nothing spicy there, it's normal, it is part of the game. It's been positive [the US tour] and it's good to create a bond with the players. "We looked a bit lazy today and we need to change that. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that." Shearer verdict Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer is confident that Benjamin Sesko will be a success if he joins Manchester United this summer. When asked if Sesko has the skill-set to thrive in England, Shearer told Amazon Prime: "I do, I think it's a matter of who can afford him. There is no doubt that this football club has a history of making an absolute fortune on transfers and this guy could be the next one to come into the Premier League. "Either foot - left or right - which is great to see. The work rate, the work off the ball, he's got all them things and he's got very good technique, good balance and I don't think there is a doubt in my mind that and he would look very comfortable in the Premier League. I do think he has a lot to learn, but he can learn no doubt."

Pumped galleries, rising rookies … only pundits let down Women's Open
Royal Porthcawl proved to be the perfect venue for the 25th edition of the AIG Women's Open as a major. Set on the stunning south Wales coastline, the R&A pulled off a hugely successful event, with a bumper attendance that totalled more than 47,000 and breaking records for broadcast audience share, digital reach and engagement. It was wonderful to meet overseas fans who had travelled to Wales to follow their favourite players and the entertainment provided for children was exceptional. After hosting the largest women's sporting event in Wales's history, Royal Porthcawl could be in line for more significant tournaments. Charley HullThe immensely popular Hull may have suffered another heartbreak by finishing second in a major for the fourth time, but such is her optimistic outlook on life you would not have known. Supported by huge galleries, who willed the Englishwoman to victory, she displayed grace, humour and searing honesty in equal measure after failing to chase down Miyu Yamashita. The 29-year-old's time will surely come. Japan's successIt took most people by surprise when Japanese players filled six of the top ten places after the first round. A solid junior programme and a thriving domestic tour have produced a succession of top players. Thirteen play on the LPGA, among them Yamashita, the diminutive rookie who delivered a links golf masterclass. Japan occupied three of the final top five slots. Mimi RhodesIn her rookie year on the Ladies European Tour, the 24-year-old from Somerset has stormed to three wins and after a decent finish of tied-19th, consolidated her position as the leading rookie. She engaged well with the crowds, impressing with her warm personality and easy smile. Rhodes will always be remembered for her hole in one at the par-three 5th in the final round, thanks to a fortunate nudge off her partner Steph Kyriacou's ball, which was sitting inches from the hole. Slow playThankfully, the scourge of the game failed to rear its head with players — unlike those at the Open at Royal Portrush, where rounds took up to six hours — taking well under five hours and even less at the weekend. The R&A issued official warnings as a group fell out of position and by the end of the third round had issued only one bad-time warning. Lottie WoadAfter all the hype surrounding her first major as a professional, and coming in as favourite, Woad faced a baptism of fire. The 21-year-old from Farnham, Surrey, dealt with it, using her customary composure, although by her high standards was probably disappointed with a tied-eighth finish. The crowds were privileged to witness the arrival of golf's rising star. Nelly KordaIt proved to be a dismal week for Nelly Korda, who has not won all season having collected six titles by May last year. Having reigned as the world No1 for 71 weeks, she has lost top billing to the talented young Thai Jeeno Thitikul. Korda was not the only one guilty of displaying a distracted air and a few more smiles would not go amiss. Scottish declineCatriona Matthew, who won the championship in 2009, once led a formidable array of Scottish players, among them Janice Moodie, Mhairi McKay, Dale Reid and Kathryn Imrie, but this year Gemma Dryburgh was the only one in the field and missed the cut. Louise Duncan showed huge promise as an amateur, but has struggled to break through on the Ladies European Tour. TV commentaryIt's infuriating to hear some, but not all, of the commentators constantly stating the obvious and describing what the viewers can see for themselves. Their job is to provide an insight into the difficulty of the shot, personal insights into the players or technical expertise. The adjective 'sensational' is overused, and we know it's a golf ball. Ball suffices.

Russell Martin's post-Motherwell Rangers criticism came from ‘love and care'
The Gers boss hit out following the William Hill Premiership opener at Fir Park, questioning mentality, speaking about 'egos' and accusing some of 'self-preservation'. Martin was speaking again at the club's training ground ahead of the first leg of the Champions League third qualifier against Czech side Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox on Tuesday night, where a play-off tie against Austrian outfit Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaits the winners. 'I think if they know us by now as a group of coaches that it all comes from a place of love and care for them,' said the Gers boss, who replied 'hopefully he will be in it, we will wait and see', when asked if new signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, will be included in the squad. 'We are here, myself, Gilly (Matt Gill, assistant), the coaches, ultimately for the players. 🎙️ Russell Martin spoke to the media ahead of Tuesday's match against Viktoria Plzeň. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 'We're here to win football matches, but as coaches day to day, we are here to help the players. 'That's our job, to help them win, to help them develop, to help them improve and understand why, to help them enjoy playing for a club like this, because I don't think too many of them have enjoyed it enough to play for this amazing football club, because it's not always easy. 'I don't come out and say that because I want to be ruthless and all that stuff. 'If they know me as a person, the people who do know me, they know it comes from a place of love and to help them and to want them to be better. 'So I think when it comes from that place, whatever is said and if they understand that, then we'll always have a really honest and good conversation about it. 'I hope they understand who we are by now and what we're here to do, and I really believe they're really trying. 'So they're good people, but the default to try and protect yourself when it gets tough, we need to just shed that a little bit.' ✍️ We are today delighted to announce the signing of Finnish international Oliver Antman on a four-year-deal. — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 4, 2025 Martin confirmed that Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane will again miss out through fitness issues while it is not clear if Mikey Moore, the 17-year-old attacker who has signed on loan from Tottenham, will receive international clearance in time to be part of the squad. On the task facing his side, Martin said: 'The game is going to be tough. 'They are really powerful, really strong, play forward quickly, run forward quickly. 'It's a really different test to the Panathinaikos one and it is a really interesting and exciting one for us. 'They have strength in certain areas, but we have to try and turn the game, especially at Ibrox, into the game that we want, move the ball quickly, better than we did the other day. 'We have to really be up for the fight against these guys but I am looking forward to it.'
