Phola SAPS scores goals against crime in thrilling soccer matches
Crime remains a huge concern in Phola.
Phola SAPS recognised that the solution lies in awareness and proactive community-based interventions.
One such powerful tool is 'sport against crime', and during Youth Month, the police engaged the community in Phola in various such initiatives.
'Sport provides a safe environment where the young people can expend energy, develop physical skills, and learn valuable life skills. By engaging through sport, we offer a positive alternative to a destructive criminal path,' said Sergeant Thabang Ntuli, Phola SAPS spokesperson.
Events like 'sport against crime' bring people together, nurturing stronger community bonds, instilling discipline, teamwork, and a sense of belonging that can steer the younger generation on a path of success.
Ntuli said that when the youth is involved in positive activities, it often encourages parents and other community members to become more invested in their well-being and the overall safety of their neighbourhoods.
Residents in Phola often face socio-economic challenges like poverty, inequality, unemployment, and access to resources and which are huge crime contributors.
Ntuli believes that providing sports programmes like 'sport against crime' is a strong empowerment tool for the youth to make positive choices, develop their potential, and contribute constructively to society.
Ntuli himself scored two magnificent goals during their game.

Get ready to race with the best in the Emalahleni City Marathon 2025 Runners in eMalahleni are gearing up for another exciting experience of a marathon hosted by the Emalahleni City Marathon Club. The club is up to its sleeves, preparing for its third marathon, which will take place on September 20 at Witbank High School. The marathon will feature four distances, which include a 42.2km marathon and a 21.1km half-marathon, which will both start at 06:15, and the 10km race and 4.9km fun run starting at 06:30. Substantial prizes will be awarded across various age categories for the 10km race to marathon distances. Athletes who finish the 21.1km run in under two hours and the 42.2km marathon in under four hours will receive a unique Anthracite-coated medal. This year's run follows two successful marathons held in 2022 and 2024, respectively, that saw winners bagging awesome prizes. In 2022, the male runners were topped by Given Baloyi, who finished his 42km race in 02:33:00, with females topped by Lilian Malela who completed her race in 03:01:30. In 2024, Derrick Masango beat up the male runners by finishing his race at 02:32:36, Eunice Nhlapho on the other hand beat up all the ladies and finished at 03:42:41. Morris Mdluli, secretary general of the club, encourages people and organisations to be a part of the prestigious event. 'This is a community event and everyone is welcome,' he said, explaining that all age groups are accommodated. Murdered KDM official identified as rising star Nokulunga Mashabane
Nokulunga Mashabane, a senior municipal official, was found murdered in her car on Friday, prompting a murder investigation and tributes from Mayor Ali Ngidi. Mashabane (31) was discovered on the Zinkwazi Link Road around 1.30am with gunshot wounds to the head and neck. KwaDukuza police confirmed that a case of murder is being investigated. No arrests have been made. KwaDukuza mayor Ali Ngidi expressed his shock, describing Mashabane as a 'rising star' in local government. Ngidi described her as humble, respectful, professional and deeply committed to her work. He said the two had spoken the day before at a school function and were due to meet again at a Youth Month event on Friday. Mashabane began her municipal career in 2019 as a secretary in the communications department and recently rose to a position in the mayor's office, overseeing intergovernmental relations and protocol. Originally from KwaMshibe in Maphumulo, she held qualifications in public relations from DUT and was studying towards an honours degree with UNISA. Ngidi said Mashabane was known for her grace, work ethic and passion for public service. 'She was so gentle she wouldn't hurt a fly, and yet she was met with such unimaginable brutality.' He called for calm and urged the public to avoid speculation while police investigations continue. 'Violence against women and children has become so pervasive that in some circles it is viewed as normal, and that is unacceptable. We must let the law take its course and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.'
