King Salman Academy to document 52 local Saudi dialects

Saudi Gazette10-06-2025
Saudi Gazette report
RIYADH — The King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language revealed that the first phase of the "Aswat Blog" project will document 52 local dialects from various regions of Saudi Arabia, with the possibility of integrating the data into artificial intelligence applications.
The blog is still undergoing work on its tools and remains in the development and testing phase. According to the academy, the blog will preserve Saudi dialects, as the project's impact extends to the possibility of integrating data into artificial intelligence applications such as voice recognition and instant translation, facilitating communication and enhancing understanding of dialects used in daily life.
It will provide researchers with a robust audio database to study the evolution of dialects and the impact of social and economic factors on them. The blog also seeks to raise public awareness of dialect diversity and strengthen the connection of new generations to their local dialects, in addition to Standard Arabic.
According to the academy, the blog preserves Saudi dialect diversity and enables researchers to study it through a suite of analytical tools, most notably a voice detector, a sound map, and a list of common collocations. It also includes a tool for enriching the blog and verifying dialects, available for public use.
It is noteworthy that the blog includes a variety of topics, including graphic storytelling, discussion of places, foods, customs and traditions, holidays, everyday situations, and quotes.
The academy owns 13 blogs. The Falak Language Blogs platform, a technical platform comprising 13 language blogs supervised by the academy, enables linguistic researchers and data scientists to study linguistic phenomena and develop artificial intelligence applications in the field of Arabic language.
It is noteworthy that the Aswat blog was announced by the King Salman Gobal Academy for the Arabic Language in early 2024. This is in line with its strategic plans aimed at supporting the fields of linguistic computing, accelerating the pace of scientific research, enhancing data sources, employing artificial intelligence technologies in Arabic language applications, preserving its integrity, and supporting its pronunciation and writing. This also aims to enhance its global standing, raise awareness of it, and facilitate its teaching and learning within and outside the Kingdom.

Musk's xAI Explores Data Center Deal with Saudi-Backed Humain

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, is in early-stage discussions to lease data center capacity in Saudi Arabia, according to people familiar with the matter. The move is part of xAI's broader strategy to expand its computing infrastructure in regions with low-cost energy and political alignment. xAI is in talks with two potential partners: Humain, a Saudi-backed AI firm offering a multi-gigawatt capacity deal, and a second unnamed company currently developing a smaller, 200-megawatt facility that could be operational much sooner. The individuals requested anonymity as the discussions are private. While Humain's offer is ambitious, it's still years away from being realized. Despite support from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the company has yet to break ground on much of the promised infrastructure. Any agreement with xAI would therefore be a long-term bet, with no immediate impact on the startup's current computing needs. The second potential partner, already in the process of constructing its 200-megawatt facility, presents a more viable short-term solution. In both scenarios, xAI would lease — not own — space in the data centers to power its AI models, which require significant computational resources. xAI,Humain Representatives for xAI, Elon Musk, and Humain declined to comment. The competition for data center capacity is intensifying as companies like xAI, OpenAI, and Meta race to train and run large AI models, including chatbots such as xAI's Grok. These facilities are expensive to build and energy-intensive to operate. If Humain's multi-gigawatt proposal comes to fruition, it could rank among the largest data centers globally — a one-gigawatt center can consume as much electricity as nearly 900,000 homes annually, according to Carbon Collective. 'It makes a lot of sense. As power demand rises, balancing energy costs with operational needs will be key,' said Kathryn Huff, former head of nuclear energy at the U.S. Department of Energy and now at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Speaking on Bloomberg Television, Huff suggested that countries investing in new nuclear infrastructure may become appealing hosts for data centers. Within Humain, infrastructure development is being led by Jeff Thomas, while commercial negotiations are managed by Saeed Al-Dobas. The project is also seen as an extension of Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal's broader efforts to strengthen ties between Musk and the kingdom, including previous investments in xAI. The possible partnership with Saudi Arabia reflects Musk's global search for AI infrastructure in locations where electricity is cheap and financing is plentiful. The initiative comes as Musk faces mounting regulatory and political friction in the U.S., even while maintaining close ties with former President Donald Trump. xAI has already built a massive facility in Memphis, home to its 'Colossus' supercomputer, and Musk has hinted at another nearby expansion. Recently, xAI secured $10 billion in funding, evenly split between equity and debt. Musk has stated publicly that the company is well-capitalized, though how and where it will deploy that funding remains in flux. Ross Nordeen, a founding member of xAI and a former Tesla employee, is leading infrastructure negotiations for the startup. He is regarded internally as a key strategist and dealmaker, similar in role to Musk confidant Omead Afshar during their time at Tesla. On the technical side, former Tesla and X executive Andree Jacobson is helping steer development. In addition to Saudi Arabia, xAI is also exploring data center deals in the UAE and has held discussions with Abu Dhabi-based AI firm G42. Talks have also extended to several African countries with lower energy and operational costs. However, Saudi Arabia's combination of sovereign wealth and access to specialized AI chips currently makes it the most attractive prospect, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Uber Rolls Out 'Women Drivers' Option in Saudi Arabia

Uber has launched the 'Women Drivers' option in Saudi Arabia – a new feature that allows female riders to pair exclusively with female drivers. Following its introduction in other countries, including Egypt, Jordan, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and several European countries, the unique feature has come to Saudi Arabia for safer rides and more inclusive experience. Announced during Uber's 'By Women, For Women' special event in Riyadh, the launch of the new feature coincided with the 7th anniversary of lifting drive ban for women in Saudi Arabia. Women Drivers Option The 'Women Drivers' feature is part of a broader effort to increase Saudi women's participation in the work force, particularly the mobility sector. Moreover, the women-only taxis feature underscores Uber's commitment to creating a safer and more inclusive environment for women, in line with the objectives of the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030. Women Empowerment On this occasion, Uber's General Manager in Saudi Arabia, Youssef Abouseif, said: 'The launch of the 'Women Drivers' product reflects our commitment to empowering women and supporting their mobility and economic independence. We're giving women more choice, more opportunity, and a strong sense of community.' The Kingdom has made major milestones toward empowering women and increasing their participation in the workforce, as part of its transformative Vision 2030. In the light of this, Saudi Arabia lifted the ban on women driving 7 years ago. The new feature will be gradually rolled out to Uber users across the Kingdom, allowing female drivers to accept exclusively female riders. Supportive Initiatives Additionally, Uber has announced ambitious programs to support obtaining licenses, as well as savings on vehicle access, offering more than 20 million subsidized rides for women. The platform has also launched communities for women drivers, where they can connect, receive top tips, and share their experiences. The #Gigsister initiative aims to empower women drivers and help them grow. Furthermore, the platform is partnering with Alnahda Society, a non-profit that supports women's empowerment, to promote women's financial literacy and economic independence in Saudi Arabia. Safer Rides As part of its safety measures, Uber has developed in-app emergency assistance, 24/7 incident support, as well as 'Follow My Ride' for a safer riding experience. In the light of this, CEO of the Saudi Tourism Authority, Fahd Hamidaddin, said: 'One thing we're not doing well is talking about safety for women. We're going to tell the world how safe Saudi Arabia is for our mothers, sisters and daughters, our female travelers.' Short link : Post Views: 23
