National Stud reports €1.8m loss as star stallion Invincible Spirit retires
New accounts show that revenues at Irish National Stud DAC last year remained static at €7m. The pre-tax losses of €1.8m last year followed €1.82m pre-tax losses in 2023.
In his report, chair of the Irish National Stud DAC, Dan Flinter states "2024 has been a year of modest operational and net gains from last year, as we continue our transition through the inevitable decline in income arising from Invincible Spirit'.
Mr Flinter states that 'in 2017 he was responsible for approximately 70% of the entire company's revenue. As recently as 2020 this was 40%. In 2024, Invincible Spirit was responsible for less than 2% of income. He was retired from stud duty at the end of 2024 thus closing the chapter on his remarkable stud career."
'Our greatest challenge remains the development of stallion income to replace Invincible Spirit. Progress has been made but the reality is that investments in stallions are for the long term and take time to bear fruit," said Mr Flinter.
Mr Flinter further states that Phoenix of Spain, in his fifth season at stud was one of the most popular stallions in Ireland, covering 217 mares. He adds that income 'from the sale of bloodstock increased significantly in 2024 welcoming 31 foals owned by the stud and syndicate partners.
These included foals by proven sires Invincible Spirit, Siyouni, Dark Angel, Showcasing, and Phoenix of Spain.
Mr Flinter states that 'Our highest priced yearling was a Night of Thunder filly out of Sea Mona which sold for €640,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale. Our foals sold well with the highlight being a Siyouni colt out of Dubious Affair selling for €110,000'.
The National Stud DAC recorded stud and farm revenues of €4.4m and tourism revenues of €2.57m, with 144,000 visitors which was down on the 152,000 in 2023.
Numbers employed reduced from 79 to 74 as staff costs increased marginally from €2.95m to €3m. The pay package for ceo, Cathal Beale last year totalled €152,408 that included salary and other short term benefits of €124,908. In 2024, Mr Beale signed a three year extension to his contract.

viaNexus Unveils MCP Service to Enable Agent-Driven Access to Financial Data
NEW YORK, July 24, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- viaNexus, the high-performance financial data platform built for intelligent systems, today announced the release of its MCP Service, a first-of-its-kind MCP implementation enabling a proper client/server architecture for autonomous agents to securely discover, request, and consume financial data — without manual Authentication/Authorization and paywall integration removinghuman intervention. The viaNexus MCP Service leverages the emerging Model Context Protocol (MCP) to deliver real-time, entitlement-aware access to market data, filings, fundamentals, news and more. Each agent is assigned a scoped identity and permission set, allowing precise control over what data can be accessed, by whom, and under what terms. "Agents are the new users, and data is their fuel," said Tim Baker, CEO of viaNexus. "With the MCP Service, agents can connect directly to our data platform — with secure authentication, entitlements, and governance built in from the start." Unlike current MCP server implementations, which are currently being advertised as API interfaces, often lack native support for secure authentication protocols, and agent-specific access controls, the viaNexus solution introduces several key innovations: Agent-Scoped Identity and Access Control — Unique, auditable access tied to organizational policies and account-level entitlements Asynchronous Authorization Workflow — Secure approval flows and timed bearer tokens remove reliance on human-mediated OAuth flows, which are incompatible with autonomous workflows Built-In Paywall Integration — Data providers can configure usage-based access and pricing, confident that monetization and compliance are enforced programmatically Native Integration with viaNexus Data — Agents can retrieve structured data on demand, fueling analysis, reasoning, or downstream processes "This is just the beginning," said Pedro Aguayo, CTO of viaNexus. "We're already working on open sourcing the entire client stack — including connectors, configuration tools, and telemetry. Our goal is to make secure, agentic data workflows easy to build, deploy, and scale." Exclusive-Rio Tinto weighs sale of titanium business, sources say
By Clara Denina, Ernest Scheyder and Melanie Burton (Reuters) -Rio Tinto is considering a possible sale of its titanium unit due to weak prices and low returns, three sources said, just as incoming CEO Simon Trott will weigh up a restructuring of the world's second-largest miner when he takes over next month. Titanium, used to make paints, cosmetics and food colouring, is also a vital ingredient in jet engine parts, missile casings, rocket components, submarines and naval vessels because of its strength, corrosion resistance and lightweight properties. China, the world's biggest producer and consumer of titanium dioxide, has expanded its production to capture over half the global market over the past decade, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. China wields significant pricing power, which has knock-on effects for Western miners, including on margins. Against this backdrop, Rio Tinto has been evaluating whether the titanium business still has a place in its portfolio. How to exit it could be one of Trott's first decisions, the three sources familiar with matter said. Rio Tinto declined to comment. Rio would not be the first to exit titanium. Bowing to investor pressure, DuPont in 2013 said it would spin off its own titanium dioxide business. In the company's portfolio, titanium falls under the Minerals business, headed by Sinead Kaufman. This division also includes borates, used in cleaning products, as well as the Iron Ore Company of Canada, diamonds, and the Jadar lithium project in Serbia. The Minerals division reported an underlying EBITDA of $1.1 billion in 2024, 24% lower than in 2023, the company's financial report shows. Iron and titanium operations in South Africa and Canada accounted for more than half. Trott, who takes over as the company's CEO on August 25, has headed the iron ore division since 2021. There is an acknowledgement at the company that internal costs, such as staffing, are excessive, sources have told Reuters, so cost-cutting is expected. "There's going to be a middle management clean out," said one of the sources, who was not authorised to speak publicly. Part of Trott's pitch and vision for Rio includes a focus on streamlining the structure of the company's core businesses iron ore, copper, lithium and aluminium, the sources said. Australia and possibly Canada's iron ore operations, and the upcoming Simandou project in Guinea are likely to be grouped together, as well as the recently acquired U.S. lithium company Arcadium and its other lithium projects and investments, they added. Rio is scheduled to release its half-year results on July 30. Dow Cuts Dividend In Half As Losses Mount And Tariffs Amplify Industry Pain
Dow Inc. (NYSE:DOW) shares plummeted Thursday after the chemical manufacturer posted a larger-than-expected loss in the second quarter and cut its dividend in half. The company cited persistent macroeconomic pressure, margin compression, and global trade disruptions as reasons for the cutback. The company reported an adjusted loss of 42 cents per share, wider than Wall Street's projected 12-cent loss, according to consensus estimates. Revenue fell 7% year over year to $10.104 billion, missing the $10.252 billion estimate. Dow posted a GAAP net loss of $801 million for the quarter, while operating EBIT swung to a loss of $21 million from $819 million in the same period a year cash flow from continuing operations was negative $470 million, a decline of $1.3 billion from the prior year, driven by lower earnings and seasonal working capital needs. Sales declined across all operating segments. Packaging & Specialty Plastics revenue fell 9% to $5.03 billion, driven by weaker downstream polymer prices. Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure revenue declined 6% to $2.78 billion, weighed down by soft demand in construction and mobility. Performance Materials & Coatings revenue dropped 5% to $2.13 billion, though operating profit improved slightly from the year-ago quarter due to lower input costs and seasonal strength in silicones. Overall volume decreased 1% year over year, as gains in the U.S. and Canada were offset by declines across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India. Local prices fell 7% from the same period last year and 3% sequentially. Dividend View more earnings on DOW Dow's board approved a 50% reduction in its quarterly dividend to 35 cents per share, down from 70 cents. The payout is scheduled for September 12 to shareholders of record as of August 29. The company said the adjustment reflects a more balanced capital allocation approach and aims to preserve financial flexibility amid industry-wide earnings pressure. 'This quarter, Team Dow advanced several aggressive actions in response to the lower-for-longer earnings environment that our industry is facing, amplified by recent trade and tariff uncertainties,' commented Jim Fitterling, Dow chair and CEO. 'We are delivering near-term cash support and earnings growth levers that we expect will total more than $6 billion by 2026. We are also focused on improving margins and optimizing our global portfolio, as seen in our recent European asset actions.' Fitterling added that while Dow's strategic actions are helping mitigate industry volatility, a wave of low-cost exports from new market entrants is distorting competitive dynamics globally. He said the situation calls for broader industry coordination and potential regulatory intervention to restore market balance. Outlook Fitterling stated that Dow's near-term growth projects will become fully operational in the third quarter. These, along with the company's longer-term investments, are expected to expand Dow's presence in higher-value applications and less trade-sensitive end markets. Dow expects third-quarter 2025 net sales of approximately $10.2 billion versus the consensus of $10.599 billion. Packaging & Specialty Plastics: Sales up 1%–3% quarter-over-quarter (Q/Q) on stronger integrated margins and Poly-7 ramp-up, offset by maintenance. Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure: Sales up 1% to down 1% Q/Q, with volume gains and reduced maintenance partly offset by lower spreads. Performance Materials & Coatings: Sales down 2%–4% Q/Q due to seasonal demand declines and margin pressure in upstream siloxanes. Company-wide, ongoing cost reductions continue, with depreciation forecast at $725 million, net interest at $175 million, and the operational tax rate at –40% to –60%. Price Action: At last check Thursday, DOW shares were trading lower by 9.29% to $27.55 premarket.
