London's shocking phone snatching hotspots where thugs target 37 tourists DAILY – settings EVERY visitor must switch on

The Suna day ago
THUGS are taking over the streets of London's most popular tourist hotspots snatching £50million worth of phones last year.
Data obtained by The Sun reveals the worst hit areas across Greater London, with one popular tourist hotspot hit by as many as 37 mobile thefts daily on average.

The Metropolitan Police has warned that gangs are pocketing millions, with phone thefts "on an industrial scale".
Almost 80,000 handsets were stolen last year - that's up by about 16,000 on 2023.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, tourist hotspots tend to rank highest, which is especially worrying for anyone planning on venturing into the capital over the summer.
However, hundreds of incidents were reported in typically residential areas up and down Greater London, too.
The data from the Met Police is broken down in wards and includes both robbery offences and theft offences.
It doesn't include areas represented by the City of London Police.
Among these, the West End comes out as the worst place for phone thefts, with a staggering 13,578 cases logged - the equivalent to 37 handsets every day on average.
St James's - which covers areas around Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and all the way along the famous Stand - ranked second with some 6,693 recorded incidents.
Bloomsbury, Holborn & Covent Garden, Borough & Bankside, as well as Waterloo & South Bank also clocked up more than 1,000 reports in total.
Other popular areas to be targeted include Hyde Park with 550, Stratford Olympic Park with 865 and Camden Town with 906.
Met Police seize 1,000 stolen phones in a week and arrest 230 people
The Met Police told The Sun that criminals behind the problem are making millions by being able to easily sell on stolen devices either here or abroad.
"We are seeing phone thefts on an industrial scale," a Met Police spokesperson told The Sun.
"In response, we have increased patrols in hotspot areas while officers are using phone-tracking data and intelligence to pursue those responsible.
"By intensifying our efforts, we're catching more perpetrators and protecting people from having their phones stolen in the capital.
"The Met is also working with other agencies and government to tackle the organised criminality driving this trade and calling on tech companies to make stolen phones unusable.
"We are reminding victims to report their phone as stolen as soon as possible to maximise the chance of catching the perpetrator, too often thefts are reported hours or days later."

TAKE ON THE PHONE THEFT GANGS
There are many obvious ways to avoid falling victim to phone snatching gangs, such as being aware of your surroundings and putting your phone away when you've finished using it.
But there are settings on your mobile you need to switch on.
Primarily, you should have location tracking activated to help police pinpoint where your mobile is.
On iPhone, it's known as Find My and on Android it's Find My Device.
You can find these within the settings.
There's also another important trick to try available on Android.
It may not result in you getting your phone back, but can prevent thieves causing more devastation by raiding through your banking apps to steal money.
Theft Detection Lock cleverly uses motion sensors to pick up on the sort of movements associated with a phone being snatched and whisked away.
When it's detected, your phone automatically locks so criminals can't dig around your device.
While iPhone doesn't have the same feature, there is Stolen Device Protection.
This kicks in when you're away from familiar locations like your home and work.
It means that if someone steals your device while you're out and about after seeing your passcode, they can't make "critical" changes.
So accessing your stored passwords and credit cards will require Face ID or Touch ID. There's no option to use a passcode instead.
And there's also a Security Delay feature.
So if you want to change your Apple Account passcode, you'll have to wait an hour and then perform a second Face ID or Touch ID scan.

Jay Blades 'just weeks away from starring in new reality TV show' before arrest

Former BBC Repair Shop host Jay Blades is said to have signed up to a brand new ITV reality show but was dropped when news of his arrest emerged weeks before filming started Axed BBC star Jay Blades was reportedly set to appear on a brand new reality TV show before his arrest came to light. The former Repair Shop host pleaded not guilty following being charged with engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards his estranged wife last year. Blades, who rose to fame on the hit BBC show, was arrested on May 3. It was the same day his wife Lisa Zbozen publicly announced her split from the presenter after 18 months of marriage. He was said to have signed up to new ITV show Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters before his arrest. However, the show was reportedly thrown into chaos after allegations emerged with bosses taking swift action to remove Blades. 'Attracting a popular BBC star to be in the new ITV series was a big win for bosses," a source told the Sun. 'But as soon as Jay Blades was arrested in March 2024, they knew they had to make a quick decision about the future of the show. 'He was given the boot. Producers got lucky as they hadn't started filming or doing any promotion yet so were able to replace him with someone else." They added travel plans had been put in place for those taking part, so his exit caused "upset and disruption" behind the scenes. Blades became a household name when he began hosting The Repair Shop in 2017 when the show first aired on BBC Two. In October 2022 the dad-of-three was the lead presenter for a special edition of the BBC series featuring the newly crowned King Charles. He then worked on a 15-part restoration series with Only Fools and Horses star Sir David Jason. David and Jay's Touring Toolshed aired at the start of last year and was a hit with viewers. However, recent episodes were pulled from the BBC schedule and catch-up programmes. Blades was due to head to the Bahamas alongside the likes of Sir Lenny Henry and Call the Midwife 's Helen George to overcome their fear of sharks in the ground-breaking new show premiering this week. Ross Noble, Countdown's Rachel Riley, McFly's Dougie Poynter, Amandaland's Lucy Punch and TV presenter Ade Adepitan also took part in the series that marks 50 years since the release of iconic film Jaws. They were taught to dive by an instructor with missing limbs and challenged to confront their greatest fear and flown to the island on Bimini in the Bahamas, home to around 10 different species of shark. Weeks after the series was announced, Blades was arrested and charged. He appeared at Worcester Crown Court in October where he spoke to confirm his identity and entered his not guilty plea. The trial begins on August 26 and is expected to last two weeks. The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment.

Postman jailed for 23 years after beheading girlfriend

Warning: This article contains details some readers may find distressing An "evil" postman who moaned about being lonely hours before he severed his girlfriend's head and tried to dismember her body has been jailed for a minimum of 23 years. Ewan Methven murdered Phoenix Spencer-Horn, 21, in the flat they shared in East Kilbride, near Glasgow, last November. The High Court in Glasgow heard the killer dumped his partner's body parts in their hallway and failed to call emergency services for two days. The 27-year-old then bought drugs, watched pornography and sent sickening texts to Phoenix's worried mum pretending she was still alive. Phoenix was stabbed 20 times using three knives in an attack that unfolded after she returned from her waitressing job in Lanarkshire. The 21-year-old described Methven as her "soul mate" on social media, saying in one TikTok video: "Life is so much more beautiful and full of colour with you." A few months later she was murdered by the same man she had been in a relationship with for two years. 'There was a bad smell where the walls join' Sky News has interviewed the couple's neighbour who lives directly next door. Toni Brown, 25, described the horror of discovering what happened. She said: "I think I stayed out of the house for about a week after that. I couldn't even sit. It was horrific. "It's horrific. It gives me shivers thinking about it. It is crazy to think I stayed next door to a monster like that. "What scares me the most is knowing she was lay there and I was in here oblivious." Asked whether she heard any noises or violence around the time of the murder, Ms Brown said: "There was a bad smell in my house in the early hours of the morning she was found. "There was a bad smell in my kitchen basically where the walls join together. Methven's own defence lawyer told the court society will see him as the "personification of evil". When he eventually called 999, he claimed to have suffered a drug-induced blackout during the violent killing. Another life lost to gender-based violence It has raised questions once again about the growing prevalence of gender-based violence. Fiona Drouet's daughter Emily was 18 years old when she took her own life at university in Aberdeen in 2016, days after being choked and slapped by her ex-boyfriend. Angus Milligan was later convicted of physical and psychological abuse. Fiona, who now campaigns on violence against women across the UK and Ireland, has set up a charity called Emily's Test in her daughter's name. Reacting to the death of Phoenix Spencer-Horn, Ms Drouet told Sky News: "There is another mother and father that have just been plunged into utter hell. "Somebody once said to me that if god came to you and said, 'I am going to give you this beautiful daughter, but you'll only have her for 18 years and then we need to take her back, would you still want her?' and I would take those 18 years and go through the pain rather than have nothing. "Although just now that probably offers no words of comfort for Phoenix's parents, maybe one day it can."

Police officers in Phoenix, Arizona, delivered a customer's pizza after arresting the original delivery driver.
