Scientists make startling discovery after reviewing 700,000 hours of forest sounds: 'It's sort of a blueprint'

What happens if a bird sings in the forest and no one is there to hear it?
If it's in the Sierra Nevada, chances are a microphone placed by researchers from Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin will be listening.
A vast network of audio recorders now covers almost 40% of the mountain range in California. They transmit groundbreaking bird-tracking data back to scientists for a practical wildfire study, according to Phys.org.
Here's how it works. A joint team from Cornell's conservation bioacoustics lab and UW partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and several other West Coast schools. It placed enough microphones to cover 6 million acres of forest and gathered over 700,000 hours of tape featuring all kinds of birdsong, Phys.org explained.
In the lab, they ran the recordings through BirdNET, which is powered by artificial intelligence. It can recognize distinct species just from hearing a snippet of sound. The technology was developed by Cornell ornithologists and Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany. With this method, the team analyzed the population levels of spotted owls, woodpeckers, and eight other key birds that reflect the forest's health, per Phys.org.
Those findings are already pretty useful for birders, conservation efforts, and more research. Plus, getting such a large dataset this way was far more cost-effective than manual observation would have been, researchers said.
But the team did not stop there. It set out to apply its bird presence data to other variables, such as forest density and canopy height. These are the kind of traits that forest managers rely on when strategically removing foliage or running a controlled burn to prevent the spread of wildfires and restore forests.
Yet managers are not always equipped to make those decisions with biodiversity in mind. Now, they can just look at a detailed map informed by hours of birdsong and see where certain species are likely to live, according to Phys.org.
As global temperatures rise, devastating fires are becoming more frequent. They pose intense and long-lasting dangers to both humans and wildlife. With this kind of applicable research, those on the front lines can work to prevent fires and protect habitats at the same time.
"It's sort of a blueprint for how monitoring birdsongs and calls can inform management," lead author and Cornell postdoctoral research associate Kristin Brunk said, per Phys.org. "I'm really hoping that we'll hear from other researchers who are trying to do similar things."

After their introduction, the smallmouth bass did what invasive species do and quickly took over many of the region's lakes, which resulted in significant declines in native fish populations. However, despite 25 years of efforts to eradicate the smallmouth bass from these lakes, the populations continued to thrive. Now, researchers have published a study with the surprising reason why eradication efforts have failed. According to the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, efforts to physically remove this species from these lakes to decrease the population size were unsuccessful because, over time, the smallmouth bass evolved to mature earlier and grow more quickly, resulting in smaller fish but a larger overall population. One of the senior researchers on the study, Peter McIntyre, explained: "Twenty-five years ago, Cornell's Adirondack Fishery Research Program set out to test whether we could functionally eradicate smallmouth bass from a lake. It took us 25 years to prove why the answer is no: the fish evolved to outmaneuver us." Why are evolving invasive species concerning? Invasive species, like smallmouth bass, already cause a plethora of problems when introduced to new ecosystems, so if they can evolve to avoid eradication, these issues worsen. Because invasive species spread so rapidly, they can destroy native species and ecosystems by outcompeting them for food and other vital resources. Invasive species can also introduce new diseases into ecosystems, which can decimate native species populations. Depending on the type of invasive species, other problems caused by their introduction could include impacted human food supplies, more extreme weather patterns, and altered soil chemistry. However, by prioritizing and protecting native species, as researchers tried to do in the Adirondacks by removing smallmouth bass, food supplies are protected, the spread of disease is limited, and natural resources are better conserved. What's being done about the smallmouth bass? The discovery of the smallmouth bass's evolution to outwit eradication highlights the need to prevent invasive species from entering ecosystems in the first place. Now, according to astrophysicists and cosmologists, Earth and all of its celestial siblings will likely be swallowed back into the super-small singularity they came from, in what is known as the 'big crunch' theory. Alarming as it sounds, physicists say there's no reason to fret just yet. According to leading experts on the matter, the big crunch theory supposes that the universe will eventually stop expanding and everything will be pulled back together. Cosmologists at Cornell University predict that the big crunch is billions of years away —19.5 to be exact. Henry Tye, a lead researcher at the institution, suggested that the big crunch will begin in 11 billion years, and will take another 8.5 billion years to conclude. Supposing humanity is still around billions of years from now, scientists say it's unlikely we would notice any distinct changes while the big crunch takes place. 'Intelligent civilizations at the scales of solar systems or even galactic scales would not notice any obvious phenomenon because these changes happen at much larger cosmological scales,' Dr Hoang Nhan Luu, a researcher at the Donostia International Physics Center, explained to the Daily Mail. However, one of the warning signs would be a rising cosmic temperature. In a few billion years, it's probable that the universe, including all of its major celestial bodies, will be the same temperature as the surface of the sun. 'Needless to say, all humans will burn up in the furnace of this cosmic hell,' Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at Harvard University, told the Daily Mail. The theory has been swirling among academic circles for decades, but fell out of favor among some camps of researchers several decades back. However, after dark energy — a repellent force that pushes things in the universe apart — was discovered in the '90s and research has progressed, it seems more and more experts are reevaluating their stances. Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki, an astrophysicist at the University of Texas at Dallas, told Discover Magazine that dark matter research has revealed that the universe isn't slowing down, but rather, its expansion is accelerating less, and eventually, it will come to a slow halt. 'To survive, human beings have to move to the edge of our solar system or beyond. We have a few billion years' time to prepare for that trip,' Tye explained to the Daily Mail. The big crunch theory spells trouble for humanity in several ways, but it's far from the first scary-sounding phenomenon that our planet has undergone.
