Joe Rothwell thankful for chance to finally join Rangers

After spending last season on loan at Leeds, helping the Yorkshire club win promotion back to the Premier League, midfielder Rothwell, 30, completed a permanent transfer from Bournemouth, where he still had a year to run on his deal.
Rothwell – who has signed a three-year contract – will link up again with new Gers manager Russell Martin, having played on loan for him at Southampton in the successful 2023-24 campaign, which ended with victory in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Former Manchester United trainee Rothwell revealed there was a possibility he could have joined Rangers when he was leaving Blackburn in the summer of 2022, before instead opting to sign for the Cherries.
'It probably took a little bit longer than I would have would have liked it to, but I am delighted it is finally done and I can't wait to get going now,' Rothwell told a press conference.
'Just before I signed for Bournemouth, it was kind of a toss-up between the two (with Rangers).
'I decided to go to Bournemouth at the time, but I am thankful that the offer came back around this time and I jumped straight at it.'
We can confirm that Joe Rothwell has joined Rangers on a permanent transfer.

Rothwell added: 'I think selfishly I always had in my head, once when I left United as a kid, my plan was always to try and get back and play in the Premier League.
'So they (Bournemouth) gave me the opportunity to do that and it was something that I couldn't turn down at the time.'
Having taken up a new challenge in Scotland, Rothwell feels Rangers – who have also brought in right-back Max Aarons on loan from Bournemouth, midfielder Lyall Cameron and defender Emmanuel Fernandez – can move forward under Martin.
'The manager was obviously a big factor in me coming here,' Rothwell said.
'He sees the game how I would see it if I was a manager, that was the main pull, but it is more about how he is as a guy.
'You want to come and work for him. The manager treats everyone the same – there is no-one better than anyone else.
'He is really good at bringing clubs back together and creating a fantastic bond.'
Rothwell added: 'If you want to win things, it starts off the pitch, so if he can get everyone buying into the same thing here, I think he can create a really successful time at Rangers.
'You can see from the outside how huge this club is – it is built to win trophies.
'Hopefully, if the manager implements how he wants to do things, it can be really successful and we can go on and win things.'

Ronaldo's latest move met with brutal statement by Prem winner 'He's done'

Cristiano Ronaldo has committed his future to Al-Nassr for the next two years in a deal worth a stunning £492million, but Emmanuel Petit has slammed the move and claimed it shows he has fallen away from the top level Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has taken aim at Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Manchester United legend is "done at the highest level" after signing a new deal with Al-Nassr. Ronaldo's future was up in the air this summer after he teased "this chapter is over" at the end of the last Saudi Pro League season, leading to speculation he could link up with rivals Al-Hilal. ‌ But the 40-year-old quickly ended speculation over his future by putting pen to paper with the Middle East outfit over a new deal that will reportedly earn him around £492million. ‌ That makes him the top-earning athlete in the world and Ronaldo has shown he has no plans to slow down or retire in the immediate future - having helped Portugal win the Nations League last month. He has also continued to plunder an impressive amount of goals after netting 35 times in 41 games last season. However, Petit - who won the Premier League with Arsenal in 1998 - believes that Ronaldo will not return to the top level in Europe after committing his future to Al-Nassr. "Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he is done at the highest level with his new Saudi deal, but he confirmed that when he left Manchester United," Petit told Escapist Magazine. ‌ "Having said that, no one could have matched the crazy money he is being paid, but at 40 he is still playing well and performing for the national team. "I expect to see him at the World Cup next year but I'm not shocked he is staying in Saudi, no one could've matched those terms. They are crazy." ‌ Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr at the end of 2022 after an accrimonious departure from Manchester United, who he accused of "betraying" him by forcing him out of the club. The veteran star will go down as one of the greatest players to have played the game after netting a career total of 956 goals and he is now chasing 1,000. Ronaldo still appears to be hungrier than ever after signing another deal with Al-Nassr. When his new contract was announced, he wrote: "A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together." He said he received offers to play elsewhere this summer before ultimately committing his future to the Middle East, signing until 2027.

Even at 38, Jamie Vardy would still be an upgrade on the strikers at Rangers, writes Calum Crowe

When Rangers broke their club transfer record and forked out just over £4million to sign Paul Gascoigne from Lazio 30 years ago, it was a box-office moment that made headlines far beyond the boundaries of Scotland. A footballer with genuinely global appeal, Gascoigne arrived in Glasgow as a flawed genius whose talents illuminated everything around Rangers during that nine-in-a-row era in the '90s.

Joao Pedro in dreamland after firing Chelsea into Club World Cup final

Joao Pedro felt he was dreaming after scoring twice on his full Chelsea debut to send them into the Club World Cup final. The Brazil forward, who only completed his £60million move to the Blues from Brighton last week, struck in each half against his former club Fluminense to secure a 2-0 win in Tuesday's semi-final in New York. The Premier League side, who are now guaranteed a payday of around £80million, will face either Paris St Germain or Real Madrid in the final on Sunday. Dancing their way to the Final 🕺 @ChelseaFC | #FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) July 8, 2025 Pedro was delighted with his performance although, having muted his celebrations in front of his old fans, he admitted to mixed feelings. The 23-year-old told DAZN: 'I think it was a dream. I don't think it could have been better – two goals. Now we need to think about the final. 'I am happy to score my first goals for Chelsea but also I know this tournament is very important for Fluminense. 'I can just say sorry but I have to be professional. I play for Chelsea. They pay me to score goals and today I was happy to score. 'Now I need to rest, focus on the final because I think it will be a very important game.' Take a bow, Joao Pedro. 🙌 — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) July 8, 2025 Pedro opened the scoring with a fine curling strike from outside the area in the 18th minute and then doubled the lead with a ferocious shot off the underside of the bar just before the hour. It was a controlled, professional performance from Chelsea, although they had a scare at 1-0 when a penalty was awarded to Fluminense for handball against Trevoh Chalobah. It was overturned following a VAR review. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said: 'It is a great achievement. It has been a fantastic season – top four in the Premier League, Conference League (winners) and now in the final of this competition. We are so, so happy.' On the performance of Pedro, Maresca added: 'We know that we have players that are able to do that and we know we have to help them get in situations where they can do that and we know Joao can do this.' The match was Chelsea's 63rd of a long 2024-25 campaign that began last August. 'We go game by game,' said Maresca. 'Finally we have the last game of the season and hopefully we can win the tournament.' The downside for Chelsea was the ankle injury suffered by midfielder Moises Caicedo in the closing stages. Maresca said: 'I told him that he has to do everything to be on the pitch on Sunday so we will see.' Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho felt the outcome might have been different had the penalty decision stood. He said: 'We knew there would be strong pressure from Chelsea and we would have to suffer. 'They knew how to take their opportunities and unfortunately we didn't make the most of ours. 'There was the penalty disallowed. A few would give it and others wouldn't. If they had awarded the penalty it would have been a different story.'
