Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah state government, through the Ministry of Community Development and People's Wellbeing (KPMKR), has supplied 100 additional hemodialysis machines to government hospitals and clinics across the state under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 'Sabah Sejahtera' Health Assistance Scheme. The symbolic handover was officiated today by State Health Exco and KPMKR Minister Datuk James Ratib at Queen Elizabeth Hospital II today.
Advertisement The RM8.5 million allocation under the scheme covers RM4 million for treatment subsidies and RM4.5 million for equipment procurement, aimed at easing the burden of end-stage renal failure (ESRF) patients, especially from low-income groups. James highlighted that the number of ESRF patients in government facilities has increased from 1,831 in 2020 to 2,133 in 2024, necessitating expanded dialysis services. Currently, Sabah has 474 hemodialysis machines, but only 435 are functional, while 39 units are damaged. The new machines will help address this gap, improve service quality, and replace outdated equipment. In addition, patients undergoing dialysis at government facilities are exempt from the RM13 fee, while those on home dialysis (CAPD) receive a RM100 monthly subsidy. There are 25 government facilities (23 hospitals, 2 clinics) offering dialysis services in Sabah, with 5 specialist hospitals also providing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). The new machines are equipped with modern filtration technology, touchscreen interfaces, digital monitoring, energy-efficient systems, and come with at least one year of warranty and maintenance service. James reaffirmed the state's commitment to providing accessible and quality healthcare in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Prihatin and Sabah Maju Jaya. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt unveils rehab-focused anti-drug plan
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Shamsul pictured with attendees present at the event. KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Government is boosting drug prevention and rehabilitation efforts by establishing Drug Assessment Centres (DAC) and working closely with community-based groups. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah warned of increasing synthetic drug use, including flavoured mushroom vapes, and called for urgent, evidence-based interventions. DACs mark a shift from traditional detention, focusing on medical and psychosocial assessments, in line with amendments to the Drug Dependants Act 1983 that prioritise rehabilitation over punishment. The Cabinet has approved the Anti-Drug Communication Plan 2025–2027 to promote behavioural change, accurate messaging and cross-sector cooperation, alongside the launch of District Community Synergy Committees (JSKD) to strengthen grassroots coordination. Shamsul urged NGOs to embrace digital tools for youth outreach, stressing that drug prevention requires the shared commitment of agencies, families, educators and the wider community. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah minister calls for boost in local pharmacists
From left: Organising chairperson Andy Chi, organising chairperson Siew Len, Deputy Director of Health, Dr Liau Siow Yen Sabah (Pharmacy), Sabah Pharmaceutical Society president Hiew Chui Li and Vice President 1 of Malaysian Pharmacists Society, Susan Pan at the opening ceremony of the 36th Sabah State Pharmacy Conference. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 2): Community Development and People's Wellbeing Datuk James Ratib disclosed that only 26.3 per cent of government-employed pharmacists in Sabah are locals. He advocated for the establishment of a School of Pharmacy at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), increased investment in local talent development, and more scholarships for Sabah-born students pursuing pharmacy. Additionally, he proposed that job opportunities in community pharmacies be prioritised for Sabahans. Citing observations in Kota Kinabalu and other districts, he noted that many pharmacies are operated by non-Sabahan business owners. To address this, he supported a policy that at least 70 per cent of community pharmacies should be owned by local citizens, framing it not only as an economic measure but also a matter of health sovereignty. James, who is Sabah Health Exco, stated this in his speech for the 36th Sabah State Pharmacy Conference. The conference, which is held from August 1 to 3 at the Le Meridien Hotel, brings together pharmacists from across Malaysia to advance healthcare practices and community engagement. This is a collaboration effort between Sabah Pharmaceutical Society and Sabah State Health Ministry (Pharmacy Services Division). The conference began with a heartfelt visit to the Holy Family Residence in Papar, where pharmacists conducted home medication reviews, educated residents on medication adherence, and spread cheer to the elderly community. This initiative showcased the profession's growing role in direct patient care and community service. The official opening ceremony was graced by the Deputy Director of Health (Pharmacy), Dr Liau Siow Yen, who represented James. In his speech, James expressed his gratitude to pharmacists, acknowledging them as vital guardians of medication management and one of key players in the healthcare system. He emphasized the crucial role pharmacists play in ensuring continuous medicine supply, quality assurance of pharmaceuticals, and being primary care providers. He called for stronger collaboration between public and private sector pharmacists in areas such as follow-up therapy, health screening, and patient education. Such partnerships, he said, are essential to improve treatment outcomes, medication adherence, and the overall quality of life for all segments of society. James also recognized the increasing involvement of community pharmacists in health screenings, lifestyle counselling, and outreach to remote areas. However, he voiced concern about the ongoing challenges in the pharmaceutical workforce within the government sector. Organising chairperson Siew Len extended a warm welcome to delegates from Labuan, Pahang and Terengganu. The conference featured a wide array of topics including Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Artificial Intelligence applications in healthcare, a session on military pharmacy experiences, and a human resources workshop conducted by the renowned 'Aunty HR.' With the theme 'Think Health, Think Pharmacist', the three-day conference aimed to empower pharmacists to become more well-rounded healthcare professionals, capable of addressing both clinical needs and broader public health concerns. The event also highlighted the growing emphasis on Community Social Responsibility (CSR), underlining the evolving role of pharmacists in supporting both individual patient care and the wider community. In addition to the lectures and workshops, the conference featured a healthcare exhibition, where industry partners showcased their latest products, services and innovations, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between practitioners and industry stakeholders.

Health ministry to roll out free measles-rubella jabs for children
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: The nationwide campaign aims to boost immunisation coverage and support Malaysia's goal of eliminating measles by 2030. (File pic) PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry will roll out a free nationwide Measles‑Rubella Supplementary Immunisation Activity from Aug 4 to Oct 12 for children aged six months to 59 months. The ministry said the campaign targets children born between Aug 1, 2020, and Jan 31, 2025, aiming to strengthen the existing immunisation programme by boosting and restoring herd immunity. The programme also supports the national goal of eliminating measles by 2030, with the primary objective of raising immunisation coverage and providing early protection to prevent wider transmission, it said in a statement. Measles and rubella are highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, including ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures, and in some cases, death. The ministry said both diseases are preventable through the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Under the national immunisation programme, the MMR vaccine is administered at nine and 12 months, while Sabah administers an extra measles dose at six months. 'Overall, Malaysia's immunisation coverage has exceeded 95% annually, including in 2024. However, only 62% of districts achieved MMR coverage above 95% in 2024,' the ministry said. It said a minimum of 95% coverage is crucial to achieve herd immunity and control the spread of the disease. Official data showed measles cases nearly doubled in 2024, with 3,791 cases recorded compared to 2,002 in 2023. The number of outbreaks rose to 231, from 112 the previous year. Of the reported cases, 44.1% involved children under five years old, while 28.9% were non-citizens, of whom 84.3% had never been vaccinated. Three measles-related deaths were recorded last year, all involving unvaccinated non‑citizen children aged eight months, three years, and 17 years. The ministry urged parents and guardians to promptly bring eligible children for the free supplementary measles‑rubella (MR) vaccination. Appointments will be sent via MySejahtera, or can be made directly in the app. Walk‑ins are also accepted at government health clinics, it said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
