Norway launches flagship large-scale carbon capture and storage project

Norway on Tuesday launched a flagship
carbon capture and storage
(CCS) project, a technology seen as crucial to curbing climate change but struggling to find a viable economic model.
Bearing the English name for the Vikings' wooden ships, the
Longship project
involves capturing carbon dioxide emitted from a cement plant and later from an incineration plant, transporting it by ship to a terminal on Norway's west coast, and then injecting and storing it beneath the seabed.
The project has received significant financial support from the Norwegian state, which will cover 22 billion kroner ($2.2 billion) of the total estimated cost of 34 billion kroner for the installation and operation over the first 10 years.
Norway has presented Longship as the "world's first full-scale value chain" for capture and storage of carbon in the greenhouse gases that cause harmful climate change.

"This is not just an important moment for Norway, it is a breakthrough for carbon capture and storage in Europe," Norwegian Energy Minister Terje Aasland said.
For the capture component, the facility will be officially inaugurated Wednesday at a cement plant operated by Germany's
Heidelberg Materials
in Brevik, southeastern Norway.
It will prevent 400,000 tonnes of CO2 from escaping into the atmosphere each year.
Another part of the project, the Hafslund Celsio waste incineration plant near Oslo, is also expected to capture 350,000 tonnes of CO2 starting in 2029.
The liquefied carbon dioxide will be transported by ship to the Oygarden terminal near Bergen, where it will be injected into a pipeline to be stored 110 kilometres (68 miles) offshore in a saline aquifer 2.6 kilometres below the seabed.
The terminal has been in place since last year as part of the
Northern Lights project
-- led by oil giants Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies -- which claims to be "the world's first commercial CO2 transport and storage service".
Backed by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a way of reducing the carbon footprint of industries hard to decarbonise, such as cement and steel,
CCS technology
remains complex and expensive.
Without financial assistance, it is currently more profitable for industries to purchase "pollution permits" on the European carbon market than to pay for capturing, transporting and storing their CO2.
The total global carbon capture capacity currently amounts to only about 50 million tonnes, according to the International Energy Agency, equivalent to just 0.1 per cent of global annual emissions.

There is gold in your old phone: New easy 3-step recovery method discovered by scientists

As global dependence on technology grows, the world is grappling with a parallel crisis—an overwhelming rise in electronic waste . Driven by fast-paced advancements in AI and internet-based devices, old phones, laptops, and other digital products are being discarded at an unprecedented rate. According to the United Nations' Global E-waste Monitor (GEM), 62 million tonnes of e-waste were produced in 2022 alone—an 82% rise from 2010. Projections indicate this number will climb by another 32% by 2030, reaching an estimated 82 million tonnes. This discarded tech poses dual challenges: severe environmental damage and the loss of valuable materials such as gold, silver, and rare earth elements. Despite their worth, only about 1% of the global demand for rare earth materials is currently fulfilled through e-waste recycling . In response to this, a team of researchers has introduced a novel, environmentally safe method for extracting gold from electronic waste—an approach now published in the journal Nature Sustainability . A Three-Step Process That Turns Waste into Wealth The newly developed method replaces conventional gold recovery techniques—which often involve harsh, toxic chemicals—with a safer and more sustainable alternative. The procedure unfolds in three key stages: by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Step 1: Dissolving the Gold The gold present in old devices is first dissolved using trichloroisocyanuric acid, a chemical widely used in water treatment. This process is facilitated by a halide catalyst, which helps oxidize the metal from its solid form. Step 2: Binding the Gold A specially designed polysulfide polymer is then introduced to the solution. This polymer selectively binds to the dissolved gold, separating it from other materials. Step 3: Recovering the Gold Finally, the gold is recovered by either pyrolyzing (heating) or depolymerizing the gold-bound polymer. The recovered gold is of high purity, and the polymer itself can be reused—making the entire method more sustainable. Sustainable Solution with Large-Scale Potential Unlike small-scale gold mining, which can cause environmental degradation and health risks due to mercury and cyanide use, this technique avoids such hazards altogether. The researchers have tested the process successfully not only on electronic waste but also on natural ores and other gold-rich materials, underlining its versatility. As global e-waste output continues to escalate—equivalent to 1.55 million 40-tonne trucks that could circle the Earth—this method offers a tangible solution. It not only extracts valuable resources from discarded gadgets but also promotes a circular economy that encourages reuse and responsible recycling practices. With increasing interest from industries and researchers alike, the technique has potential for large-scale application. By turning obsolete electronics into a source of sustainable gold, the innovation could reshape the way the world handles e-waste, reducing both environmental harm and economic loss.

51-49 Senate vote: Three Republicans who said 'no' to Trump's 'Big Beautiful' bill

Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky(left), US President Donald Trump (middle), Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina (right) Three Republican senators—Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin—broke ranks on Saturday late-night senate session as the chamber voted 51–49 to advance President Donald Trump's sweeping One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Tillis and Paul opposed the motion outright, while Johnson initially voted no before switching after negotiations. Tillis cited concerns over deep Medicaid cuts, warning of adverse impacts on healthcare access in his state. Paul objected to a provision raising the national debt ceiling by USD 5 trillion. Johnson changed his vote following closed-door talks that addressed his deficit concerns. The nearly 940-page bill seeks to extend USD 3.8 trillion in Trump-era tax breaks, add new exemptions including no federal taxes on tips, and allocate USD 350 billion for national security and immigration enforcement. It proposes significant cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, and green energy programs to offset costs. A revised provision includes a USD 25 billion fund for rural hospitals, aimed at mitigating concerns over Medicaid provider tax reductions. The bill also raises the SALT deduction cap to USD 40,000 for five years and increases the national debt limit. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill could result in 11.8 million more uninsured Americans by 2034. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like local network access control Esseps Learn More Undo It estimates food aid would drop for 3 million recipients. The wealthiest earners would see a USD 12,000 tax cut, while the poorest households could lose USD 1,600 annually. On Sunday, President Trump described the Senate's procedural clearance as a "great victory." "Tonight we saw a GREAT VICTORY in the Senate with the GREAT, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL," he posted on Truth Social. He thanked Republican senators Rick Scott, Mike Lee, Ron Johnson, and Cynthia Lummis for their support. "They, along with all of the other Republican Patriots who voted for the Bill, are people who truly love our Country!" Trump wrote. He pledged to work with them to advance his economic agenda, citing goals to secure the border, reduce spending, and protect Second Amendment rights. In a separate post, Trump added, "VERY PROUD OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TONIGHT. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!" The bill was released late Friday night. Debate in the Senate is expected to continue through the weekend, with multiple amendments and votes ahead. If passed, the legislation will return to the House for final approval before heading to Trump's desk.
