Eritrean President Accuses Ethiopia of Warmongering, Labels UN Letter 'Childish'
In a televised interview aired on Eritrea's state broadcaster, Afwerki dismissed the Ethiopian letter as 'childish,' claiming it reflected a broader campaign by Ethiopia's ruling Prosperity Party to deflect attention from what he described as 'preparations for war.'
Afwerki said that initial optimism following the appointment of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had quickly faded, citing what he referred to as Addis Ababa's 'reckless policies' towards its neighbours. He further warned that recent Ethiopian rhetoric amounts to a 'declaration of war,' despite Eritrea's stated desire to maintain 'strong bilateral relations' with Ethiopia.
The Eritrean leader also criticised Ethiopia's recent statements regarding access to seaports, calling them a 'dangerous adventure driven by external powers.' He disclosed that Ethiopia had previously proposed shifting all its imports through Eritrea's Assab Port instead of Djibouti, a proposal Eritrea ultimately rejected, citing principles of good neighbourliness.
Afwerki went on to describe Ethiopia's pursuit of port access and naval bases in Somaliland and other regions as part of 'provocative and divisive policies,' and argued that such ambitions do not reflect 'authentic Ethiopian national interests.'
While asserting that Eritrea harbours no regional ambitions and seeks no confrontation, Afwerki warned that his country remains ready to defend itself in the event of aggression. He claimed that Ethiopia is actively preparing for a major offensive by acquiring drones, missiles, and tanks, and urged the Ethiopian government to prioritise resolving its internal crises instead of being 'dragged into a futile war.'
The latest flare-up in rhetoric underscores the deterioration of relations between the once-allied neighbours, who signed a historic peace agreement in 2018 after decades of hostility. However, regional analysts have warned that the fragile peace may be unravelling amid growing mistrust and strategic rivalry in the Horn of Africa.

Pakistani Gov't Urges Social Media Firms to Block Accounts Run by Terrorist Groups
SEENEWS The Pakistani government on Friday called on global social media organisations to immediately block the accounts of proscribed terrorist groups disseminating propaganda on their platforms. On Wednesday, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry had highlighted how a terrorist group was using WhatsApp channels to 'disseminate hateful content and harmful narratives', urging the platform and the global community to help Pakistan combat terrorism. Addressing a joint press conference today in Islamabad alongside Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik, Chaudhry said: 'I want to request social media operators and platforms to cooperate with us on the blockage and removal of accounts, taking measures to stop mirror accounts and to share information of account holders who are operating these accounts.' Chaudhry said terrorist groups and individuals, including those banned in the United States, the United Kingdom and sanctioned by the United Nations, were operating accounts on social media platforms such as X, Facebook and WhatsApp. He said the National Action Plan (NAP) — formed in 2014 to take action against terrorists through a concerted national effort — requires taking action against those spreading propaganda on media and social media. The agenda items of NAP include a ban on the glorification of terrorists and terrorist organisations through print and electronic media, and measures against the abuse of the internet and social media for terrorism. He requested social media firms to block these groups; use artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent 'mirror accounts'; and share information about their operators. He urged creating auto-detect and auto-block algorithms against such accounts. Barrister Malik said authorities had unearthed 481 accounts associated with proscribed terrorist groups on various platforms and reported them to social media organisations. He urged social media firms to share information about account holders to 'amplify counterterrorism operations in dealing with this newer threat'. He also requested them to implement strict measures, which include AI methods to discover more accounts. He invited them to establish their presence in the country and sought enhanced cooperation in the digital world. Malik said Pakistan was at the forefront and had rendered sacrifices in the war against terrorism, but a new trend had surfaced on social media apps such as X, Facebook, Instagram and Telegram. 'We will welcome social media platforms to set up offices in Pakistan for better coordination,' he said. 'We seek coordination between social media platforms and our law enforcement agencies on social issues and the presence of terrorist organisations on social media.' He said terror groups such as the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Islamic State Khorasan Province, Balochistan Liberation Army and Balochistan Liberation Front had an active presence on social media platforms, noting they have been banned by the US and the UK as well. 'Pakistan remains steadfast and is committed to our resolve to combat terrorism. Apart from operating on the ground, we have seen new trends in the digital realm,' he said. He said the state minister for interior also highlighted how terrorist groups were 'working on social media, recruiting and actively disseminating propaganda' through WhatsApp and other platforms. 'These social accounts significantly enhance their social media presence, whether it through their real names of pseudonyms. It poses a threat to our nation, citizens and the rest of the world.' read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Gulf countries welcome France recognition of Palestinian state - War on Gaza
Saudi Arabia and fellow Gulf Arab states on Friday welcomed President Emmanuel Macron's announcement that France would recognise the state of Palestine, and urged other countries to follow suit. Other European Union members have recognised Palestine since Israel's genocidal war on Gaza erupted in October 2023 but France is the first member of the G7 group of major advanced economies to do so. The Saudi foreign ministry said "the kingdom commends this historic decision, which reaffirms the international community's consensus on the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and to establish their independent state". It called on other countries "that have not yet recognised the State of Palestine to take similar positive steps". Macron said on Thursday that France would formally recognise a Palestinian state during a United Nations meeting in September. A ministerial-level meeting co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia to discuss a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is planned for later this month. Qatar, a key mediator in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas on ending the Gaza war, also welcomed the French move. Its foreign ministry said the move "constitutes significant support for the legitimate rights of the brotherly Palestinian people" and "contributes to advancing prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region". The Kuwaiti foreign ministry said it "commended this significant step". The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) -- which also includes the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, both of which have ties with Israel -- also praised the move. In an official statement, the ministry said French President Emmanuel Macron's decision reflects a commitment to international law and the pursuit of a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 'The recognition of the State of Palestine is a reaffirmation of the principles of justice and international legitimacy,' the ministry noted, calling on other countries around the world to take concrete steps toward implementing the two-state solution. The announcement follows Macron's declaration that France will officially recognize Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September, a move that would join the stance of over 140 countries that have already extended formal recognition. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
