Second phase of cancer awareness campaign launched in Alappuzha
Officials said the aim of the second phase was to detect and prevent oral cancer and colon cancer in men at an early stage.
The Health department launched the campaign in Alappuzha on World Cancer Day on February 4. The first phase was aimed at strengthening awareness and screening for breast cancer and cervical cancer, which specifically affects women. It targeted women in the 30-65 age group.
The department aims to ensure that as many men as possible undergo screening to facilitate early detection and treatment. Officials said those diagnosed with the disease would receive treatment at Government Medical College Hospital, district/general hospitals, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, and so on in accordance with established guidelines.
SD College Principal V.R. Prabhakaran Nair presided. District Medical Officer Jamuna Varghese, Kudumbashree District Mission coordinator S. Renjith and others attended.

New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) Out of an eligible population of 25.42 crore females aged 30 years and above, 10.18 crore have been screened for cervical cancer till July 20 this year, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav informed Lok Sabha on Friday. He said efforts have been made to improve the current proportion of cervical cancer screening in the country. In a written reply, Jadhav stated that though health is a state subject, Centre has strengthened cancer prevention efforts through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and through promotion of wellness activities and targeted communication at the community level. Initiatives to increase public awareness about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) like cervical cancer and promotion of healthy lifestyles include the observation of National Cancer Awareness Day and World Cancer Day, and the use of print, electronic and social media, he said. Under the National Health Mission, states and Union Territories are provided funds to carry out awareness creation activities, he added. A population-based initiative for screening, management and prevention of common NCDs including cervical cancer has been rolled out through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs as a part of the comprehensive primary health care under the National Health Mission, Jadhav said. The cervical cancer screening for women aged 30 to 65 years. It is conducted once in five years by trained health workers using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid at public health facilities, including the Ayushman Arogya Mandir sub-health centres and primary health centres. The positive cases are referred to higher centres for further diagnosis, the minister said. The Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) conduct risk assessment of individuals in the specified age group by using Community-Based Assessment Checklist forms and bring them to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs for screening of cervical cancer and other common NCDs. The ASHA workers also make public aware about the significance of early detection through regular health check-ups and screenings. The Union health ministry had launched an NCD Screening Campaign from February 20 to March 31 this year to achieve universal screening of individuals aged 30 years and above, Jadhav said. The campaign was conducted nationwide at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and other healthcare facilities under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, he stated. 'As per National NCD portal, as on July 20, 2025, out of an eligible population of 25.42 crore females aged 30 years and above, 10.18 crore have been screened for cervical cancer," Jadhav said. Kasaragod schools launch ‘Ma Care' centres for student well-being
The Kasaragod District Kudumbashree Mission has launched 'Ma Care' centres in schools to provide maternal-like care for students during school hours. Claimed to be the first-of-its-kind initiative in the State, the project, implemented in collaboration with the Education department, aims to address concerns related to student diet, safety, and general well-being. The centres have been set within school premises to ensure students do not leave the campus for essential needs. Functioning from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Ma Care outlets provide nutritious snacks, sanitary napkins and stationery items at prices lower than market rates. An official said the initiative is intended to curb the consumption of unhealthy foods and discourage students from accessing intoxicants from outside vendors. Sixteen schools in the district currently host these centres, with plans to expand to high schools and higher secondary schools Statewide from July. The concept has received strong positive feedback, prompting the Kudumbashree Mission and the Education department to consider Statewide implementation. 'The initiative ensures students receive the same care and attention as they would at home,' said Kudumbashree District Mission coordinator K. Ratheesh Kumar.

Screening camps to detect cancer early in men in Alappuzha district
As part of the second phase of the Arogyam, Anandam - Keep Cancer Away campaign of the Health department, cancer screening camps will be organised across Alappuzha district to detect oral and colon cancers in men, District Collector Alex Varghese has said. He said here on Friday that clinical screening camps would be conducted under the aegis of primary health centres, targeting bus stands, autorickshaw stands, railway stations, government offices, resident associations, and men's self-help groups. Men above the age of 30 will be screened. Those found with symptoms will be provided follow-up treatment. As part of the campaign, pamphlets will be read out in mosques, churches, and other places of worship. Cancer awareness questionnaires will be distributed. A letter titled Achhan Ariyaan, designed to help recognise cancer symptoms, will be disseminated through anganwadis and schools in the district. Activities such as anti-tobacco awareness, transforming schools into tobacco-free campuses, and establishing tobacco cessation clinics are also part of the campaign. Officials said the aim of the second phase was to ensure cancer prevention in as many men as possible. In the first phase of the campaign, cancer screening was conducted among women. A total of 1,20,846 women were screened across the district and cancer was detected in 57 of them, who were provided medical treatment.
