Odisha to create comprehensive database of all Water Resources

Bhubaneswar, June 3 (UNI) Odisha will create a comprehensive database of all water resources, spanning from the village level to the state level.
This initiative marks the first complete census of water resources in Odisha, undertaken at the behest of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India, official sources said on Tuesday.
The censuses will be carried out using a Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) system and a web-based application.
This initiative comprises four censuses: the Census of Major and Medium Irrigation, the First Census of Springs, the Second Census of Water Bodies, and the Seventh Census of Minor Irrigation.
For the first time, this effort is being conducted in a coordinated and convergent manner by the Department of Water Resources and the Department of Planning and Convergence.
It represents a unique example of users and producers of statistics working together to ensure better data quality.
Anu Garg, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary of the Odisha government, said this comprehensive database will be crucial for planning the state's water resources for irrigation, industry, pisciculture, and human and animal consumption.
Senior officials from various stakeholder departments participated, including the Water Resources Department, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Departments, E&IT Department, Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Chief Engineer (Minor Irrigation), Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation, Central Ground Water Board (Government of India), and State Ground Water Board (Government of India).
The focus will be on the effective implementation of the irrigation and spring censuses to capture quality data.
Garg emphasized the importance of a coordinated and convergent approach among all stakeholders to ensure accurate data collection and the creation of a comprehensive database of the state's water resources.
It was further emphasized that at the district level, the Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineer, and Deputy Director (Planning and Statistics) will work together to ensure the successful completion of these census operations.

Russia thanks the US for mediating in Ukraine peace talks

Moscow/Washington, July 1 (UNI) Russia has expressed its gratitude to the US for its mediation efforts in the Russia-Ukraine war, the Kremlin's presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, reports state media TASS. "Naturally, we are thankful for the efforts Washington and the (US President Donald) Trump team members are making to promote talks on the Ukrainian settlement," he said, commenting on US special envoy Keith Kellogg's remarks that Russia is allegedly seeking to protract the settlement process. "You know that now we are to agree on the date for the third round (of talks). The agreement that were reached during the second round of Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul have been implemented until now," Peskov explained. "And then, we must simply hold a meeting when it is agreed upon, when all humanitarian accords are implemented. Simply meet and continue talks," he added. Kellogg said earlier that the United States calls on Russia to immediately cease fire with Ukraine and engage in tri-lateral talks. In his words, Russia is seeking to protract the negotiating process. However, Moscow is also not interested in prolonging the talks, stating that Moscow will not slow down or stop its attempts to reach an agreement with Kyiv. "No one is prolonging anything here. Naturally, we are primarily interested in achieving our goals and the goals that we are trying to achieve during a special military operation through political and diplomatic means. Therefore, we are not interested in prolonging anything," Peskov said. Peskov also refrained from assessing the pace of the negotiations. "Of course, the implementation of the agreements that have been reached so far during the two rounds takes time, and requires certain preparatory measures, certain measures to carry out exchanges, to organise the transfer and reception of the bodies of the dead," Peskov said. North Korean military school delegation departs for Russia, set to visit Military Academy

Pyongyang/Moscow, July 1 (UNI) A delegation from a major North Korean military school has departed for Russia, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. Led by Kim Il Sung Military University chief Kim Kum Chol, the delegation is set to visit Russia's Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the KCNA announced in a brief two-line report today, reports NK News. This marks Kim's first known visit to Moscow since last July, when Russian Telegram channels reported that he had drowned in a lake near Moscow. Russian law enforcers and medical authorities confirmed to NK News at the time that the deceased was a man named Kim Kum Chol, who was the same age as the military official. But the KCNA's report appears to confirm that the North Korean University president did not drown and that it was a coincidence that the man who died in Moscow shared his name. The military delegation's visit comes following the visit of a Russian delegation to the DPRK, led by Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova, to promote cultural exchanges between Pyongyang and Moscow. Russia and the DPRK have significantly intensified bilateral exchanges since the latter half of 2023 when North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia. In June 2024, the two countries signed an agreement on comprehensive strategic partnership. With Russia providing North Korea with technical expertise on military infrastructure and IT services and the DPRK giving Russia weapons and manpower, Kim Jong Un recently ordered the dispatch of 6,000 military engineers and construction workers to Russia's Kursk region, in addition to nearly 12,000 soldiers already deployed there since October, with South Korea's National Intelligence Agency expecting their arrival around July or August. Congress alleges massive scam in SAIL subsidised steel sales

New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) The Congress party today accused the Modi government of being involved in a massive scam worth hundreds of crores of rupees, linked to the sale of subsidised steel by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). According to the party, around 100 companies were provided steel at subsidised rates for infrastructure projects, but instead of using it for the intended purpose, they allegedly resold it at higher prices, making huge profits. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, senior party leader Ajoy Kumar claimed that an officer Rajiv Bhatia, who flagged the scam, was instead victimised and forced to take voluntary retirement. He alleged that 100 companies were provided eleven lakh tons of steel at subsidised price by the SAIL for infrastructure project. Instead of using the steel themselves, they straightway sold it further thus making huge profits. He said, when an honest officer Rajiv Bhatia exposed the scandal, he was suspended for 10 months without any valid reason. Later, he was deliberately accused of poor performance and involvement in corruption. Kumar further said that, on the other hand, over two dozen officials who had been suspended during the investigation of the scam were reinstated under the pretext of the Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that one of the companies, Venkatesh Infra Projects Limited, was registered just ten days before the allotment of contract worth Rs 750 crore. The company directly sold the steel received under the contract, making a profit of about Rs 80 to 90 crore. While the company made the profits, the transportation charges were paid by the SAIL. Wondering what were enforcement agencies like ED doing, Ajoy pointed out that it had initiated investigations against 25 Opposition leaders, 23 of whom joined the BJP, after which cases against them were either closed or shelved. He cited the examples of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Praful Patel, Ashok Chavan in this context. UNI RBE RN
