Short doubtful for Australia's Champions Trophy semi
Skipper Steve Smith said the opener, who suffered the quad injury while fielding but struggled on to make 20 runs from 15 balls before the game was washed out, was unlikely to be fit to face India or New Zealand on Tuesday or Wednesday.
"I think he'll be struggling," Smith said. "I think we saw tonight he wasn't moving very well. I think it's probably going to be too quick between games for him to recover."
Jake Fraser-McGurk would offer similar skills as a replacement for Short at the top of the batting order, while young spin-bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly is Australia's travelling reserve.
"We've got a few guys there to come in to fill a job," Smith added.
A second abandoned game from three group matches assured Australia of a spot in the semi-finals but they will not know their opposition nor the venue for the match until after India face New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday.

NFL deals Red Zone, NFL Media assets to ESPN in billion-dollar agreement, the Athletic reports
Aug 1 (Reuters) - The NFL and Disney's (DIS.N), opens new tab ESPN have reached a deal, potentially worth billions, placing many of the league's media holdings with the sports network in exchange for equity in ESPN, the Athletic reported on Friday. ESPN is expected to have access to RedZone, NFL Network, seven more regular-season games and the NFL's fantasy football business, the report said, citing sources briefed on the agreement. There is also a possibility of integrating special features, including betting, and potentially more assets too. The four-year on-and-off discussions have led to what is said to be a complicated agreement, the Athletic report said. An official announcement is expected next week. Disney is set to report results on Wednesday. Both ESPN and the NFL declined to comment on the report when contacted by Reuters. The news of the deal comes as Disney is set to launch its new streaming service, named ESPN, this fall, providing access to ESPN networks, including professional and college football and basketball games. The new service will cost $29.99 per month and is part of the media company's effort to tap sports fans who have never subscribed to traditional television.

TALKING BULL Disgraced darts star returns after assaulting opponent in pub tournament and being slapped with eight-month ban ADAM SMITH-NEALE says he has no regrets over the alteration that led to an eight-month ban from darts and the loss of his PDC Tour Card. Last year the former professional darts player accepted a charge that he had assaulted an opponent in a local pub competition. An investigation by the Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) found that 'after Smith-Neale lost the match, his opponent offered his hand and Smith-Neale punched him in the face'. The 31-year-old claimed he had 'felt threatened by his opponent, which was why he punched him' but that reason 'was not fully accepted' by the DRA Disciplinary Committee. The DRA suspension was backdated to March 12, 2024 – the date of his initial ban – and he was barred from playing in any sanctioned event until November 12. Smith-Neale, known as Big Dog, has returned to television screens this week with appearances on the MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth, which is on Pluto TV. In an interview with Darts World magazine, the 2018 BDO World Masters champion has spoken for the first time about what happened from his perspective. He claims a rival had 'threatened my family' before and after their infamous contest that went viral online – and that is why he gave him a 'hard slap'. 'Then, as he threw the winning dart and walked to retrieve it from the board, he made a derogatory comment under his breath – well, it was loud enough to clearly hear. 'So when he turned round, I gave him a kind of hard slap which I guess looked like a punch on the video footage. They gave me eight months, which was actually quite clever. 'It still meant I could attend the World Championship qualifiers and Q-School the following January if needed.' Asked by Darts World if he regretted his actions, Smith-Neale replied: 'If someone threatens my family, I would do the same thing again.' Lions to empty the tank in search of 80-minute performance in last test
SYDNEY, Aug 1 (Reuters) - The British & Irish Lions will empty the tank in search of the 80 minute performance they have been seeking throughout the tour when they face the Wallabies in their 10th match in Australia, assistant coach John Dalziel said on Friday. The test series is already sewn up with Lions victories in Brisbane and Melbourne but going into Saturday's tour finale at Sydney's Stadium Australia, the tourists still feel they have not played their best rugby. Scotland forwards coach Dalziel said the squad were naturally tired after two months on the road but also determined to bid farewell to Australia with a 10th win and an 80-minute performance. "Well for us it's the only way to end this now, isn't it?" he told reporters at Stadium Australia. "We don't want anything to derail it. We know it's going to be incredibly hard work. It'll be more wet playing here. So we have just got to find that energy and go again and get that performance that we all want. "I think that's the key to it – there's still a performance in us. We've had 40 minutes in both of the tests. We want to give our supporters, we want to give everybody watching at home, a full 80 minutes and then show them what the Lions are about." Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong would have more cause than many to feel fatigued having played in six of the nine matches so far in one of the most demanding positions on the park. The determination of the Lions to close out the tour in style means the 32-year-old will suit up again on Saturday for his sixth start of the tour, and his last in a Lions shirt. In doing so, Furlong will match Wales lock Alun Wyn Jones' record of nine consecutive Lions test starts going back to the series opener against the All Blacks in 2017. "It is a little bit emotional, the Lions have played a massive part in my career," the tighthead told reporters on Thursday. "It has shaped the way I play the game and think about the game. I know this Lions tour will be me closing the book on the Lions. I don't want it to end. It is a special thing to be a Lion."
