Teen girl to be tried by judge after student set on fire at Saskatoon school
SASKATOON — A teen girl accused of lighting a fellow high school student on fire last year will be tried by judge alone, a Saskatoon court heard Wednesday.
Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench Justice Mona Dovell made the decision after it was requested by the girl's lawyer.
Court also heard the girl plans to be assessed by a psychiatrist before a trial date is set.
The accused is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm and arson after a girl was set on fire at Evan Hardy Collegiate in September 2024.
Police have said school staff members snuffed out the flames and one teacher was injured, and the then-15-year-old victim sustained serious injuries.
The accused and the victim cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Both the defence and Crown lawyers declined to comment Wednesday.
Last year, Saskatchewan's Ministry of Justice said the Crown would be seeking to have the accused sentenced as an adult if she's convicted.
A witness has said she saw liquid from a black canister poured onto her schoolmate's head, which was then lit on fire.

Police catch break-in suspect driving stolen car

Investigation underway after inmate dies in federal custody in Saskatoon
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says it's investigating after a 44-year-old inmate died at the Regional Psychiatric Centre. According to CSC, Mary Ellen Young died on Friday, July 18 while in custody of apparent natural causes. At the time of death, Young was serving an indeterminate sentence that began on December 6, 2011. The CSC says it has notified the inmate's next of kin and will review the circumstances surrounding the death, as per standard procedure. The police and coroner have also been notified, in line with CSC policy.

Charges laid in two-vehicle collision in Hamilton that seriously injured 2 people

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Nick Iwanyshyn A 16-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a two-vehicle collision in Hamilton last month that seriously injured two people. Hamilton police said the crash occurred at the intersection of Rymal and Fletcher roads on the evening of June 22. Police said a Mazda travelling on Rymal Road was attempting to turn south onto Fletcher Road when it was struck by a Ford F-150, which was allegedly travelling at a high rate of speed. The driver, a 17-year-old, and the passenger of the Mazda, who police say were not wearing a seatbelt, were ejected as a result of the collision. They were taken to the hospital with serious, life-altering injuries. Police said one of them remains in hospital in stable condition. The driver, a 16-year-old boy, and the passenger of the Ford sustained minor injuries. Following an investigation, the 16-year-old was arrested earlier this week and charged with two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm. He was released on an undertaking. Police said the boy is also facing charges of stunt driving, speeding (135 km/h in a 60 km/h zone) and two counts of careless driving causing bodily harm under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The driver of the Mazda is also facing HTA charges of failing to properly wear a seatbelt, driving while under suspension and a G1 licence violation for driving unaccompanied by a qualified driver. Police said they've also charged the 31-year-old owner of the Mazda with permitting a novice driver to contravene licence conditions under the HTA, making a false statement and permitting operation of a vehicle without insurance under the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.
