Casablanca Prepares for 2025 Smart City Summit with a Bold Vision for a Sustainable Future
Rabat – Casablanca is set to welcome innovators, decision-makers, and urban visionaries from across Morocco and Africa on May 21–22, as the city hosts the long-awaited 9th edition of Casablanca Smart City.
The event stands as a statement of the city's growing role in shaping the urban future of the region, according to organizers.
More than a showcase of digital tools and smart technologies, this year's edition revolves around a deeper ambition: imagining a city that listens to its people, grows sustainably, and adapts intelligently.
The theme, 'Smart NexGenCities: Innovate for a Sustainable and Inclusive Metropolis,' speaks to this shift toward human-centered urban development for a progress that leaves no stone unturned.
Casablanca Smart City has become more than an annual gathering . It now stands as a space where startups, public institutions, local authorities, and citizens meet to rethink the city from the ground up.
The 2025 edition looks to build on this momentum and promises a program rich in dialogue and forward-thinking ideas.
International experts and local actors will meet in a series of conferences and roundtables to explore smart mobility, civic participation, digital governance, and climate-conscious infrastructure.

Polisario attends EU-AU agriculture meeting in Rome despite non-recognition by EU
The European Union allowed the participation of Polisario members at a ministerial meeting held Friday in Rome with the African Union, focused on agricultural development in Africa. Total Commercial Traffic at Morocco's Ports Hits 60.8 Million Tonnes in Q1 2025
Rabat – Moroccan ports' volume of commercial traffic reached 60.80 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2025, according to recent data from the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts. The number shows an increase of 10.2%, the directorate said, attributing the growth to the strengthening of transhipment traffic, which accounted for 49.9% of total traffic. Export traffic and import traffic, as well as coastal shipping, also contributed to the reported growth. As for passenger traffic, Moroccan ports witnessed the transit of 720,645 travelers by the end of March, representing an increase of 3.9%. Cruise activity also saw a recorded growth of 46.9% in the first quarter of this year, with a total of 55,668 cruise passengers. Air transport activity also showed continued growth with a double-digit rate by the end of the first quarter, strengthening by 16.4%. The center also highlighted Morocco's measures to facilitate the return of Moroccans residing abroad, which is set to strengthen ports performance. Moroccan ports receive millions of passengers between June and September as part of the Marhaba Operation, an annual initiative the country launches to facilitate the transit of Moroccans residing abroad as well as travelers visiting the North African country from different destinations. This is expected to contribute to Morocco's economy as well as the tourism industry. In 2024, Morocco welcomed 17.4 million tourists, and the country expects 26 million travelers by 2030. Meanwhile and through the agreement, Moroccan transport firms can now route shipments through Europe to reach Ukraine. 'We see this as just the beginning,' Kayouh told Morocco's official news agency MAP, explaining, 'our teams are already exploring ways to expand this cooperation into other areas.' For Ukraine, the timing proves especially significant as the country has prioritized rebuilding its transport and logistics networks, making international partnerships crucial for economic recovery. Derkach pointed out how new transport routes will stimulate Ukraine's economy by facilitating smoother commercial exchanges. 'This cooperation benefits both sides equally,' the Ukrainian official said, thanking Morocco for its commitment to the partnership. The agreement represents one outcome of Morocco's active participation in the three-day Istanbul forum, which runs through Sunday.
