Players very eager to go to Namibia, says Assam men's team coach Saikia

Time of India18-06-2025
Kolkata: It's not often in India that domestic sides embark on overseas tours to gain international exposure. Even if they do, it's mostly local teams that they play against on those tours outside the country.
So, when Assam leave for their Namibia tour on Wednesday — to take on Namibia men's national side for five one-day games as part of their pre-season training — it will be one of the rarest of overseas tours for any team in India. For Assam it's first-ever, as on their previous and only foreign tour in August 2018, they played against Sri Lankan club sides.
The 15-member squad, under the tutelage of Assam U19 coach Subhrajit Saikia, will be captained by young batter Denish Das on this African sojourn and was made battle ready with a six-day camp held at ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, from June 11-16.
"We have been playing those exposure matches within the country so far and now we're going to another country to play against a national team. It will be a big experience for the boys to gain confidence ahead of the domestic season. They're very eager to go to Namibia," Saikia told TOI from Guwahati on Tuesday, a rest day before they depart for the tour.
"In the camp we had 24 boys, and we focused on the 15 selected for the tour.

Ayushman Malakar is a young prospect, a U19 fast bowling all-rounder, who has been promoted to the senior side for this tour. Apart from him all the boys played domestic matches last season, so we have a pretty good squad. We did match simulation and played 40-over games during the preparatory camp since it's been pretty hot in Guwahati for the last few days," added the former first-class cricketer from Assam.
Expecting different conditions in the Namibian capital Windhoek, Saikia said his side has all bases covered.
"It's winter in Namibia now. So we are expecting the ball to move a bit there. We have four fast bowlers and three spinners. But whatever the conditions, we have the resources to overcome different situations," Saikia sounded confident of his wards.
Captain Das, meanwhile, will be one of the players to look forward to on this tour. He was the Ranji Trophy skipper last season in the absence of the most famous son of the soil Riyan Parag and the 23-year-old has led by example.
Wicketkeeper-batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar will be his deputy in Namibia.
"Denish (Das) came up with great knocks and I think he has a good prospect to become a very good player. But we always miss Riyan. We want him to be with us, but he is in the national set-up now. Actually, it's very good that without Riyan they are coming up with good performances for Assam and they think that they can be the next big name, like Riyan," said Saikia.
On a personal front, though Saikia is elated to coach the senior side on the tour, he will be happy to nurture the U19 boys again, once he comes back home. "I went to Bangladesh with the U19 team last year. So now going with a senior team to a different country, it will be a great learning experience for me. I hope I can learn many good things from this tour which I can apply with the youngsters and help them get to the next level," Saikia signed off with a promise to impart that knowledge to the age-group cricketers.
The schedule: Jun 21: 1st one-day match; Jun 23: 2nd one-day; Jun 25: 3rd one-day; Jun 27: 4th one-day; Jun 29: 5th one-day (all matches in Windhoek)

Anshul Kamboj belongs to same variety of pacers as Zaheer, Jasprit Bumrah: Ashwin

Former India off-spinner R Ashwin believes uncapped pacer Anshul Kamboj belongs to a rare breed of fast bowlers, in the mould of Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah, and feels the 24-year-old is ready for Test cricket. Kamboj was drafted into the squad following injuries to Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep on his YouTube channel Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin placed Kamboj in a rare league of Indian fast bowlers who not only rely on skill but also possess a strong understanding of plans and match appreciable thing about Anshul is that he understands the plan. I've seen so many fast bowlers who, when asked about the plan, simply say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game," Ashwin said. "But Anshul knows the plans and how to execute them in the middle. That's not a trait many fast bowlers possess. Zaheer Khan had it - he was amazing. In recent times, Jassi (Bumrah) is another who understands the plan and executes it to perfection. Anshul belongs to that variety. I'm not comparing skills, because that's a different thing."The 24-year-old Haryana pacer made heads turn with consistent performances for India A against the England Lions ahead of the Test series. He picked up five wickets across four innings in Northampton and Canterbury, impressing with his late movement and praised Kamboj's natural length and wrist position - key attributes for success in English conditions."He has a very good tappa (natural length). I saw that even in the IPL. His wrist position is excellent, and he delivers with an upright seam. He never strays from his length," Ashwin said."With Bumrah and Siraj in the XI, if you bring in Anshul Kamboj, I'm telling you, that's a serious bowling attack."Ashwin also recalled Kamboj's standout performance against Kerala in last year's Ranji Trophy, where he claimed a 10-wicket haul, and highlighted his ability to bowl long spells - a key factor in English conditions."He's been in cracking form in first-class cricket. He's averaging around 13. You need that in England," he Ashwin also cautioned that the team management will need to help the youngster settle if he is handed his Test cap at Old Trafford."People will say he hasn't played in England, but he was there during the A tour. He's shown he can deliver. They'll just need to calm his nerves."- EndsYou May Also Like

Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir Sent Selection Message For 4th Test: 'Runs Haven't Come...'

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan gave his take on the team combination conundrum that India has found itself in, courtesy of injuries and lack of form of certain players ahead of the fourth Test against England in Manchester, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. India, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, is walking through a must-win territory after surrendering a 22-run defeat in the third Test. Karun Nair's place in the XI has been up for debate after his torrid run continued at Lord's. Nair has managed 131 runs at 21.83, while his compatriots have made the art of scoring a walk in the park. Just like Ravichandran Ashwin, Pathan acknowledged Nair hasn't "struggled"; he has batted well, but runs haven't come along for him. Pathan believes if Sai Sudharsan, who was dropped after the series opener, returns to the number three spot, India will benefit from a tactical advantage. He feels England's bowling unit, bereft of experience, has struggled against left-handed batters, which could come in handy for India. While he feels India would benefit from Sai's return, Pathan admitted that persisting with Nair wouldn't be a bad call. "Should India persist with Nair? He has batted well. Runs have not come; the highest has been 40. But he hasn't struggled. But I think Sai should play. The logic behind it is that he has a left-handed batter. I think England haven't bowled well to left-handers. If the team persists with Nair, it wouldn't be a bad call," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. Pathan went on to focus on the third seamer conundrum, which rose from injuries to Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Uncapped Anshul Kamboj joined the Indian team in Manchester to add cover in the speedsters department. Discussions and debates have sparked the question of whether India should line up with Kamboj or recall Prasidh Krishna, who sat out in the third Test at Lord's. Prasidh struggled to scalp wickets in the first two Tests, managing six in four innings. Kamboj has thrived in India's domestic circuit with his teasing lines and threatening lengths. He was one of the potential talents who emerged in last season's Ranji Trophy season, scything 34 scalps in six appearances at a staggering average of 13.79. Pathan weighed in on the best option that would perfectly accommodate mainstays Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj and said, "I think Prasidh Krishna should play. When there is an important match, you go for experience." "This is an important match. When Anshul Kamboj plays for India, I have no doubt that he will do well. I like his action and seam position. I think it is better to go for experience," he added. India's squad for the fourth Test: Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, Anshul Kamboj.
